P. Lalor in The Australian today was really talking up Warner. Even invoked Chappell's old "playing well, just getting out".

We'll see...

Even if Warner does make a score in T2, that doesn't change much. He'd need to go on a run spree for the rest of the Ashes to prove the critics wrong.

Warner seems to be getting out bowled a lot. Maybe even more than FTB Smith is getting out LBW to straight balls on the stumps while swiping across the line to legside. (And that is a lot!!) Both playing on and clean bowled to very full balls (low full tosses, really).

Update:

Can he keep going?

Not too many would have got bat on ball with the one that got him out. Good innings.

Mark Taylor really liked his innings.

Yeah, the dismissal ball was good... But he had the biggest possible warning the previous ball. Imagine Warne bowls a flipper that somehow misses. And next ball another flipper and the batter still has no clue. What'd we say?

Fantastic innings. Set them up to make 400+ in very difficult conditions. Australia was sent in specifically because the English expected huge assistance. He stopped them and then put them under pressure. Magnificent effort.

Mind you, 7th all-time on the Test-runs table for Australia and with a better career-average than Mark Taylor - he must have been doing a lot well for a long period.

And LBW in the 2nd innings to a similar ball.

I guess going from bowled to LBW is an "improvement"? :?: :?
But it's still out! :!:

And now out to Broad yet again.

It's like playing a batsman down.

^^^ Yup. Could just copy and past the whole post for the 2nd innings.

Unbelievable. This is how selectors can throw away an Ashes. Keep playing roulette by playing Warner on the chance he can fluke another big score. Sure, he might. But you might just go broke gambling on it.

He needs to be dropped. Are they brave enough to do it, though?

BTW, it's just not on for Chris Broad to post about it on social media. FFS, he's a match referee!! If ya wanna make smart-arse posts on social media, give up any official ICC role.

"Warner fell to [Broad] twice in seven balls at Headingley, caught in the slips in the third over of Australia’s second innings, having also being caught in the slips in the first over of the match on Thursday.
...

The left-hander’s record against Broad could eventually spell trouble for Warner’s dream of a Sydney farewell in January...
...

While Warner in the second Test at Lord’s put on opening partnerships of 73 and 63 with Khawaja, with Warner scoring 66 in the first innings, it was just his second score above 50 in 20 innings, and he is yet to make the kind of big score that would lock him in long term."

TV commentators were thinking what I was thinking: Play Marsh and Green, drop Warner.

Stupid playing Warner to begin with. Time to fix the mistake.

The putrid batting of Warner, Marny & FTB Smith cost Oz the 3rd Test.

M. Knox:

Australian selectors caught in the cult of Warner

"It’s not David Warner’s responsibility to live in the real world. With each of his failures in England, over four tours since 2013, he has shown no sign of recognising a pattern. It’s always one good ball, one piece of bad luck.
...

A month ago, Warner was given a last chance. He hasn’t convincingly taken it, but now the sands have shifted to a new argument: it is too late in the series to drop him. Who knows, maybe that once-in-a-lifetime innings will come at Old Trafford, The Oval? Without evidence, there is always magical thinking. Like a stopped clock, Warner’s form in England might possibly come good."

Match referee Chris Broad rebuked by ICC after Warner tweet

'Match referee Chris Broad has been internally rebuked by the ICC after posting a tweet making light of David Warner’s 17th dismissal by his son Stuart Broad...

Chris Broad has since deleted the tweet, and while the ICC declined to comment, sources close to the governing body indicated that he had been told it was unbecoming of his role as a neutral match official.'

As Knox wrote: one of Marsh, Green or Murphy will be sacrificed for the Cult of Warner. All offer something. Warner offers only hope.

Now we know it was Murphy who was sacrificed. And then Moheen got turn on the 1st day. And Head's bowling was mauled on the 2nd day... Sheesh.

Meanwhile, Warner, Marny and FTB Smith again failed. And Oz are in trouble.

I told you. 8) Played on again in the 2nd innings of the 4th Test.

lazzadesilva wrote:Geez Warner has had bloody rotten luck on this tour. He was batting beautifully until he dragged one onto his stumps. I’m biased but I think he still has some good innings left in him. He’ll be back strong in the next test.
Nup, Lazza. Yup, you are biased. When ya keep getting out the same bloody way, it's not bad luck.

And his average this tour (25ish) is the same as his average in England over the past bloody decade. He could fluke 150 in the next Test and it won't make a difference.

Getting out the same way over and over again shows you have problems. It's like Flat-Track Bully Smith getting out over and over again plumb LBW swiping across the line of the ball to legside (latest example 1st innings, 4th Test against Wood). Or FTB Smith against the fast short ball (latest example 2nd innings against Wood). That's what happens when you have a defective technique. Which FTB Smith certainly does have.

As for Warner... Sheesh. Look at the MCG Test against S. Africa. Dead pitch, Warner's faced hundreds of balls, scored 200 runs... And he still gets bowled by a low full toss. I said it at the time: England woulda been celebrating Warner's 200. If he'd scored a duck, maybe Oz woulda had the Ashes secured now.
