I thought this was on Saturday and played after the VFLW match would have made sence.

Playing both the vflw and vfl on the same day.

From the above team, both Kelly and MacRae are game day withdrawals.

Qtr time Coll 4 1 to Ess 3 4.
It’s been a tough hard opening quarter from both sides.
We’ve been poor at the clearances but we’ve been winning the ball back around the ground.
McInnes and Wilson both look a cut above VFL. Todays team doesn’t have to many Collingwood listed players, so you see so many instances where the good link up work from players like Bianco and Allan go unrewarded because of lesser talent around them.
Bombers look the better side but the Pies pressure is very good.

Half time Coll 5 6 36 to Ess 7 7 49
We look like the little Dutch kid with the finger in the Dyke. We simply have no height around the ground, now made even worse by Silvagni ( full back ) doing a shoulder early in that quarter. It’s a credit to our around the ground pressure that we would be closer had we not have missed what we should have kicked. There’s no stand outs for Collingwood with only single goal kickers to date and Bianco as the leading possession getter with 14.
Ed Allan looks a very smooth mover who reads the game well. Not sure if he’s quite ready but he does look to have an exciting future in front of him.
Right now, Carmichael doesn’t look better than a serious VFL player and others have passed him by. Needs a bit more polish with his ball use.
Until we get a few back, the cupboard is pretty bare. You can’t fault the endeavour of the VFL team but the lack of polish and height is costing us today.

Three quarter time. Coll 9 9 63 to Ess 11 8 74
Another quarter of sustained pressure from Collingwood.
After putting Carmichael to the sword, he kicked two in that quarter ( one from outside 50 ) to take his tally to three for the day and easily our best player for the quarter. He’s always been good sniffing a long goal but I’m still critical of a lot of his ball use around the ground if he’s going to be an AFL regular. Leading ball winners for Collingwood - Carmichael, Allen and Bianco and Carmichael with 3 goals ( 2 in the third )

Collingwood won it by 8 points was a great solid final quarter that saw the pies get home
Good news no injuries and Carmichael Allan etc…. All played well and Oscar was serviceable in the ruck

What a comeback !!
Coll 14 13 97 to Ess 13 11 89
Four quarters of relentless pressure and eventually the boys were rewarded.
If you get the chance to watch this one, you should.
2 last quarter goals from McInnes and a fantastic defensive game from Jetta against taller opponents all day.
Carmichael, McInnes and Glover with 3 goals each.
Best players - Carmichael ( 29 with a huge second half ) and Jetta followed very closely by “ team effort “. Thought Steenes second half was encouraging.
Happy for Carmichael to make me eat my words after half time. He was the catalyst for keeping us in it after half time. Still not convinced he has the polish and poise at the top level but he couldn’t do anymore today.

I wish the club would update the supporter base on the VFL listed players. There were a lot of guys I’d never heard of playing today.

I watched the game in bits and pieces and had the match centre open on the PC to the team list so I could see which player was which number.

I thought we played a better brand of footy after half time and yeah, Carmichael ws huge in the last quarter.

Thanks Pies2016 for score updates.

Pies kicked 5.4 to 2.3 in the final qtr comeback.

Goals: McInnes, Glover & Carmichael 3 each, Murley 2, Harrison, Wilson, Voulanas

Top disposals: Wilson (the other Tom Wilson) & Lane 30, Carmichael 39, Jetta 20

I am a big fan of Neville Jetta playing in the VFL. His guidance and calmness in the backline is really important with such a young team.

Josh Carmichael was epic today- could easily have had 5 goals to his name.

At 190cms and 88kgs, there is a lot to like- yes, he must polish up his field kicking but he is very hard at the contest and his second half today gave a real glimpse of what his future may hold. (Don't forget, a little over 12 months ago he was playing footy in the bush).

Much praise also to Ed Allen- the lad is lightning quick, a thumping kick, but what stood out most today was his attacking handballs that showed an innate desire to play in a positive manner.

Oscar Steene was monstered early in the ruck but he is a very eager competitor and there is much to work on here. He is raw, but has a good leap and very good below his knees for a player of his size.

I really want to see Reef McInnes play a full game in the centre or in the midfield. He looks to me like he is frustrated as a forward (even though he kicked three goals today). I would love to see a starting quartet of Macrae/McInnes/Steene and Carmichael at centre bounces in the VFL team for a few weeks. I think each of the four have a future in the AFL team moving forward.
Firm in the belief that number 17 flag is only months away...
