Gilbert's top 7 Indigenous players

Post by Presti35 »

Do you agree?

Gilbert McAdam listed his top 7 Indigenous players of all time last week.

A few people are talking about it on FB.

Here's his list:

1. Adam Goodes

2. Lance Franklin

3. Andrew McLeod

4. Gavin Wanganeen

5. Polly Farmer

6. Maurice Rioli

7. Nicky Winmar

I don't really remember Polly playing but Andrew McLeod is close to the best footballer I ever saw - I'm not sure how you win two Norm Smith Medals and don't top most lists. I would have him at 1 and I would find a place for Byron Pickett - before he lost the plot he was just a wonderful player - I can actually recall a time when I would turn on to watch North Melbourne games just to see him play. I'd have him in instead of Winmar.

Very tough to list only 7.

I think Long, Cyril and Burgoyne are the unluckiest to miss out.

I think his list is almost spot on. But he may have a slight bias towards Winmar, but I've got him in my top 10.

I dont think these guys are "top 7", but Betts, Leon, Pickett, Mickey O are getting a few mentions on FB. As is Matera and Cable, but those two would be closer.

Good call on Byron Pickett.

Easy to forget he won a Norm Smith Medal (2004) just like McLeod.

Gilbert McAdam is obviously too young and favours the most recent players. There's a risk of doing the opposite, though.

I would find a spot for Barry Cable.
