Richmond 's finals success

Since they last made the grand final in 1982, Richmond have played in only nine finals and won just two of them. I was curious to see how other teams had fared in comparison, so I came up with this list:

Finals won from 1983-2015 (out of total number played):

Hawthorn 34/53
Geelong 25/48
Essendon 23/44
West Coast 20/44 (not in existence for 4 years)
Collingwood 19/38
Sydney 19/42
North 18/33
Brisbane 17/25 (not in existence for 4 years)
Carlton 16/37
Melbourne 16/28
Adelaide 15/30 (not in existence for 8 years)
Port Adelaide 11/22 (not in existence for 14 years)
St Kilda 10/25
Bulldogs 8/28
Fremantle 6/14 (not in existence for 12 years)
Fitzroy 2/6 (not in existence for 19 years)
Richmond 2/9
Gold Coast 0/0 (not in existence for 28 years)
GWS 0/0 (not in existence for 29 years)

Not only have Richmond won the least finals of the non-expansion clubs, and have played in fewer than any other club apart from Fitzroy (whose last September appearance was back in 1986), they have the worst winning percentage of any club - less than 25%.

Go back even further...

in 1982 they finished first and won one final, then lost the famous streaker grand final. Left out of the grand final side that day were a young hotheaded full forward called Brian Taylor, and a grumpy back pocket player called Michael Malthouse...

and the rest is history...

Richmond won 3 finals in 1980, including the grand final, but missed the finals in 1976, 1978, 1979 and 1981. they won an elimination final in 1977.

So, since their golden era ended in 1975, when they won 2 finals, they have won a total of 7 finals in 40 years.

I love the fact that Fitzroy still has a better finals record than Richmond in the last 32 years despite not existing for the last 19 years!

I suppose that appalling record explains why it is that ex-Richmond back-pocket players have a 10% collective success rate coaching Collingwood in Grand Finals:

Hafey 0 from 5 (77 twice, 79, 80 and 81)

Malthouse 1 from 5 (02, 03, 10 twice and 11)

^^^ You obviously didn't live through the ridicule of the Hafey years, or you wouldn't call that record "better".

We can thank Carmen [and Hafey] for destroying that era through their egos and lack of communication with one another.

2000 to 2011 wasn't bad though. There's been no better time to be a Pies supporter in decades, or at least not in the ones I've been around for. :)

In 6 days North Melbourne just won as many finals as Richmond has in 33 years.
