I love it! They keep the golden boy who's unproven and the guy with two premierships to his name decides to leave the club that he's supposed to be revered at.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch apart from Carlton ;)

So are Essendon only keeping Hird on because of a supposed legal threat by him to sue if he is sacked?

Given that Caro went so strongly with the story that Hird would be asked to resign or face termination you can only surmise this to be true.

I find it astounding that he still remains coach of Essendon though you have to say they put themselves in this situation by not sacking "one of the main architects" of the program right from the get go.

To pay him a million to sit out this season was probably done because he had a contract still in place but to re-sign him immediately after the AFL handed down there punishment smacked of arrogance by the club and Hird and a complete thumbing of the nose to the AFL.

They've made there bed, now they have to lie in it.

I really couldn't care much about what they do but it does seem just a little appalling that the Bombers would, as I understand the media reports, underwrite Hird's legal costs for at least the original failed hearing in the Federal Court AND send him overseas on full salary for a year AND extend his contract for 2 years but require Thompson to pay his $30,000 penalty personally. Bomber deserved better than that.
