The Williamstown Football Club has announced the signing of Josh Mahoney.
In 2002 Mahoney captained both Essendon's VFL team as well as the successful VFL representative side against South Australia.
Drafted from Williamstown at the end of 1996 to Collingwood, Mahoney was later transferred from Victoria Park to Whitten Oval in an exchange for Tyson Lane. Mahoney was delisted by the Bulldogs and in 2001 was Rookie listed by Essendon before being appointed captain in 2002.
Mahoney is one of the premier on ballers in the VFL competition and his prescence is sure to produce a formidable midfield that already boasts the likes of Adrian Fletcher, Brad Lloyd, Craig Anderson and Craig Smoker.
Marcus Balwin has signed a two year contract to play with Williamstown in 2003-2004.
Marcus grew up in Finley before moving to live at Assumption College from 1994-1997. Marcus was selected at Selection 35 by Hawthorn in the 1997 National Draft. After playing at Hawthorn in 1998 and 1999 at Reserves level, Marcus was de-listed before being selected by Geelong in the Rookie Draft. Marcus kicked in excess of 60 goals at VFL level in 2001 but was not retained by the Cats. In 2002 Marcus joined Glenelg in the SANFL before heading home to Victoria at the end of the season.
Marcus is 6 foot 5 and can play up forward plus also pinch hit as a Ruckman.
Williamstown has pulled off another recruiting coup with former Carlton and St Kilda player Sam Cranage agreeing to terms with the Club.
Cranage played 12 games for the Blues in their disappointing 2002 season with his best game being round 19 when he collected 25 possessions against minor premiers Port Adelaide at Optus Oval.
Cranage was originally drafted from the North Ballarat Rebels to St Kilda. After 3 seasons and 8 games for the Saints Cranage was traded to the Blues as part of the Aaron Hamill swap at the end of the 2000 season. Cranage was unable to fill a regular place with the struggling Blues outfit and was delisted at the end of the 2002 season.
At only 23 years of age Cranage is capable of a long and distinguished career with the Seagulls and is sure to provide considerable strentgh, talent and experience to the Club's midfield.
Williamstown has also secured the services of former Western Jets and Essendon VFL player Mathew Towner. Towner was a top-up player for the Essendon VFL side in 2002 after graduating from the Western Jets and one player who the Coaching staff will look to developing into a senior player as the season progresses.
Cranage and Towner join an already impressive list of recruits to Point Gellibrand which includes Josh Mahoney, Marcus Baldwin and former Seagull Scott Taylor.
