Reserves GF reports.

WILLI TAKES HOME SECONDS' FLAG

Williamstown's Yacht Club Hotel was rocking late Sunday night, when more than 200 Willi players, officials and supporters celebrated winning the VFL premiership.

The red carpet was rolled out for first-year reserves coach Anthony Eames, 32, who masterminded the Seagulls' come-from-behind, seven-point win over arch-rivals Werribee.

The exciting game was the curtain-raiser at Optus Oval to the Geelong and Port Melbourne VFL grand final.

And the result was sweet revenge for the Willi boys after the Simon Atkins-coached Werribee beat Williamstown in last year's VFL reserves grand final.

After trailing for three quarters, Williamstown lifted their intensity to hit the lead 27 minutes into the final quarter after a brilliant goal from Leigh Sheehan. The 21-year-old, originally from Gippsland Power, was man-of-the-match with great support from Australian Sydney 2000 rower Christian Ryan, Ben Kelly and Terrence Knight.

The Gulls, led by co-captains Scott Ralph and Matthew Capes, defied the odds in the finals series with last gasp victories over Box Hill, Port Melbourne and Werribee after appearing down and out in all games.

a jubilant Williamstown administrator Brendan Curry told The Times that Collingwood affiliate players Carl Steinfort, Richard Cole, Guy Richards and Andrew R. Hill, and senior coach Brad Gotch had encouraged the team in the dressing rooms in the pre-match build-up.

He said club president Trevor Monti was among the revellers who embraced the players on Optus Oval after the final siren.

"The boys played with passion and the atmosphere was electric," Curry said. "Our average (age) is 20 so it was a magnificent achievement."

GULLS TOUGH OUT GRAND FINAL WIN

Rookie Williamstown reserves coach Anthony Eames lauded the never-say-die attitude of his players after their comeback against Werribee in the grand final at Optus Oval last Sunday.

The Seagulls are flying high after fighting back from a 33-point deficit midway through the second quarter to win the premiership - the first for the club in 12 years.

They hit the lead after Leith Teakle's 60m bomb bounced through for a goal at the 23-minute mark of the last quarter - to the excitement of a 250-strong 'blue-and-gold' cheer squad in the shadows of the Gardiner grandstand.

Williamstown hung tough to retain the one-point lead as the Tigers surged into attack on several occasions before co-captain Scott Ralph dribbled through the match-sealing goal in the dying seconds.

The final siren prompted emotion-charged scenes among the coach and his players and officials.

Club president Trevor Monti sprinted into the middle of the ground to join in the celebrations.

Club general manager Brendan Curry insists the club's future is bright given the average age of the side was 20.

Upon reading both of these articles, there is some confusion on who kicked the goal to give the Gulls the lead, but the important part is that they won.

As this is the club's first premiership victory in 12 years, could this prove to be an omen for Saturday? Only time will tell....
