Four Gulls in top team.

Post by Dale61 »

The Williamstown Seagulls are flying high with the selection of four players in the prestigious TXU VFL Team of the Year.

Star midfielders Adrian Fletcher (centre) and Brad Lloyd (half-forward) were montes.

But the selection of Donato DeAngelis at full back was a bit of a shock.

Ruckman Paul Dooley was selected on the interchange, despite missing most of the last half of the season with a knee injury that threatens his career.

It was a bittersweet year for the 1995 Listom medallist. He blitzed in the ruck as the VFL beat the SANFL representative side in mid-July -- subsequently awarded the Frank Johnson Medal for his best on ground display.

But Dooley injured his knee which made a mess of the remainder of his season.

Coach Brad Gotch was all smiles at the official announcement of the team of the year at last Monday's Liston Medal count.

Williamstown's fab four was a club-high in the 16-side competition.

Ironically, the Seagulls didn't have a player selected in last season's VFL 'dream team'.

Club powerbrokers are silently seething with Fletcher's poor showing in the voting for the coveted Liston Medal.

The pre-count favorite polled 14 votes to finish equal fourth -- well off the cracking pace set by Box Hill Hawks rover Sam Mitchell.

Mitchell polled an astonishing 31 votes from just 11 games with 10 best on grounds.

Hopes are high that the Williamstown reserves can bask in premiership glory.

The Seagulls play Werribee in the grand final at Optus Oval this Sunday.

They shell-shocked Port Melbourne by slamming on an extraordinary 5.11 to zip with the wind in the last quarter of the preliminary final at TEAC Oval in Port Melbourne last Saturday.
