Pre-Match: Anzac Day 2008 Pies v Essendon, all comments here
This can be turned into the pre-match thread if necessary, haven't seen another thread on changes or anything.
Well after that insipid display of disposing the ball on Saturday, we clearly need to drop a couple of the culprits. Holland seems to be injured - most likely sustained during the match? Therefore Holland out. I personally thought that Reid was ready, but it looks like he isn't. Of course, it could've just been an off night, but I think we might be best to stick with two talls for now, despite me being one who called for Reid to come in. He has a very bright future at the club, but right now he just needs to work on his disposal, and perhaps put some more muscle on.
After listening to the VFL game, and reading some reports, I'd say Iles could be a minor solution to our current problem. He seems to be underrated by the Magpie faithful - he has speed, endevour, good footskills, good defensive awareness, and he's hard at it. Sounds good to me. Bring him in for Brodie Holland, and give him a bit of game time (unlike the 43% or whatever it was that we gave Stanley). The other in, to replace Reid, should be Scotty Burns. He's THE in and under mid, and he is THE leader. Boy do we need him out there. However, if by some chance he still isn't right: JA - a possible inclusion, who doesn't really play as the "tall" like Reid does. He won't get in the way of Rocca as much as Reid did (nothing against the kid though).
The other alternative, is to bring Maxwell in a play him forward, and DEEP forward. It's been glaringly obvious in the last two weeks that our forward line pressure has been WAY down. This can clearly be attributed to our small forwards playing up the ground and midfield. Maxwell is one of the best tacklers at the club, and if he is told to play for the BALL, he will do it for us on the biggest stage of the H&A calender. He is also pretty good going for goal. The reason I would only bring Maxwell or JA in to play forward, is because Essendon are short on talls at the minute, and neither are required down back, because we already have a minor surplus of talls for this match given the opposition forwards.
Therefore, the changes I want to see are:
OUT: Holland, Reid.
IN: Iles, Burns.
If not Burns, then Maxwell or JA.
As for the matchups: Lloyd is slightly down on form (apart from the Carlton game), but just like Rocca, he is due. He is a very dangerous forward, and we need to watch him hard. Wakelin or Brown are the obvious matchups, don't mind either way. The other one to take the resting ruckman - Laycock or Hille. Harry O'Brien to take Mcphee, and we really need Harry to lift, he's been average the last two weeks. When Lovett or Davey plays forward, I'd probably say Heater should get the job, though I'm quite concerned about their pace. We don't have any obvious matchups for them, though Johnson could get a gig there. The alternative is to have Harry take whichever is forward, and then put Goldsack onto Mcphee.
Michael will take Rocca, and most likely Ryder for Cloke. However, if we don't play a third tall, which is likely, Fletcher may take one which will free up Ryder to play forward, which is dangerous. In that case, O'Brien would take Ryder. To avoid this, Fraser should probably drift forward just as he did vs. Kangaroos (brilliant game mate), which would force Fletcher to take him, and keep Ryder down back.
Iles and Rhyce to do tagging jobs on Stanton and Lovett/Houli, who can all carve the opposition up if not closely checked. Not really concerned about their tags on our mids.
In terms of structure: I've already said I want to see a smaller forward line. Whilst having Maxwell down there would suggest we're playing a third tall, his pressure and ability at ground level says otherwise. Nonetheless, Cloke to start at CHF and lead hard up the ground. We should direct our forward thrusts through Cloke, rather than constantly ignoring his hard work. Rocca starts from the square, with Medhurst and Maxwell (if Burns doesn't play) starting right beside him. Leon and Thomas to start on the flanks, and pushing up into the midfield. But when we have possession, we need them to double back after presenting and provide the crumbing option at the feet of Rocca. It's nothing new to most: but our crumbers have been nowhere when the ball goes to ground. Therefore if they don't get the ball when they start forward and present an option leading up - Thomas, Medhurst and Davis MUST double back towards goal and get ready for the crumb. Rocca is out of sorts, and the ball is going to ground a lot.
Finally, Essendon's style is bad for us. They run hard, they chase hard, and they play very attacking football. Our pressure must be at it's maximum this week. Their disposal isn't that great compared to Geelong and Adelaide who use a similar style, therefore they are very vulnerable to high pressure, causing turnovers and allowing us to hurt them on the rebound. HOWEVER, we need to take a risk and actually go HARD on the rebound. Straight down the corridor, with numbers of runners. This is the only reason I think Johnson should stay in the team (his disposal is appalling of late) - to provide a hard running rebounding role. Rhyce, Johnson, Swan, Didak, Heath, Goldsack... they need to run HARD and hurt the Dons where they're vulnerable, and that is on the rebound! High intensity, hard running, HIT TARGETS! We can and will go a long way, possibly all the way, if we improve in these areas. We are more than capable of doing so, it's all MENTAL.
This is ANZAC DAY! The biggest day of our football year outside of finals. The mighty MCG is sold out, and by god I can't wait for the roar after the national anthem! Of course, it's not all about the footy.. it's about the ANZACS! We've gotta go out there and show the same spirit that those heroes showed to protect our wonderful country! Show some bloody heart and courage Collingwood!
What can you tell me about this picture:
It's a photo of Gallipoli. I'll tell you what it is: IT'S BLACK AND WHITE! Black and bloody white! Coincidence? Is it because perhaps colour photos didn't exist at the time? NO! It's because those brave souls KNEW that in 93 years time, the mighty Collingwood Football Club would be on the brink of on-field disaster to it's season! They knew that the direction of our talented young team would rest on this day! WIN... and we go 3-3 and begin the march to glory! Lose... and the team's confidence is devastated, losing 3 in a row and looking towards 2009. Those diggers and the photographer who took that photo knew what was at stake.. so they made it all in BLACK AND WHITE, TO TELL OUR PLAYERS, TO TELL OUR SUPPORTERS... THAT THE TIME IS NOW! THE TIME FOR SOFT, GUTLESS, UN-AUSTRALIAN, UN-COLLINGWOOD-LIKE FOOTBALL IS GONE! THE TIME TO HARDEN UP AND DO IT FOR THE JUMPER IS NOW, THE TIME TO DO IT FOR THOSE WARRIORS IS NOW! We must honour these Australian heroes and their black and white intentions, by going out there and playing the brand of football that would make Bobby Rose proud.. that would make ALL of our club champions proud, that would make Scotty Burns the proudest damn person on the planet, because he is the captain of the club that never gives in, that never backs down, that puts in every last ounce of effort until victory is OURS!
We must stand up on the biggest stage of all, and shout out at the other 15 clubs who currently look at us with a grin...."DO YOU REALISE WHO THE **** WE ARE? WE ARE THE COLLINGWOOD FOOTBALL CLUB! YOU HAVE TO BEAT THIS IF YOU WANT TO WIN THE FLAG!" This is IT!
GO THE damn PIES!

Just for fun i would like to see the following changes.
Out
Holland(injured)
Johnson
Obree
In
Cox
Maxwell
Wellingham/Stanley/Iles
But that wont happen.
It will be something safe and easy.
Out
Holland (injured)
In
Maxwell
I also have a bad feeling Lonie is going to get the call up for Reid.
So it will be
Out
Holland
Reid (Who cares about the kids development)
In
Maxwell
Lonie(I am setting the club back a year by playing)
An even better scenario would be this.
Out
Holland
Obree
Johnson
Wakes (Rest the champ due to no match up)
In
Egan
Cox
Wellingham/Stanley/Iles
Maxwell
The side would look like this.
Harry O Brown Goldsack
Heater Maxwell Clarke
Cox Didak Thomas
Egan Cloke Reid
Medhurst Rocca Fraser
Wood Pendlegun Davis
Int:Lockyer Wellingham Swan Racer
I like that side.
Out
Holland(injured)
Johnson
Obree
In
Cox
Maxwell
Wellingham/Stanley/Iles

Burns needs to come back. Ilse had an awesome game on the weekend by all accounts so deserves a call up, but on the HBF, not key position.
Brown v. Lloyd is a good match up (if Lloyd plays)
O'Brien v. McPhee will probably work for us too
Wakes gets a spot for the resting ruckman (Hille / Laycock).
Reid must play - Fletcher / Ryder / ??? and, if Reid can get into the game they might have to play Ryder on him for his pace, so the ??? goes with Cloke, who might just kick a bag given he's a big game player.
I think we need to shuffle our forward set up a bit, instead of 6 players inside the forward 50 we need 6 players inside the forward 70.
Rocca goalsquare and leading or not as he sees fit. Someone (anyone) at his feet - Thomas / Didak / Leon / Holland rotating resting perhaps. But not to fly, to crumb. Travis Cloke STARTING 40 metres out and leading up the ground - he does that naturally anyway, but start him up the ground a bit and use his long kicking into the forward line. And Reid in front of Rocca always leading leading leading - and encourage him to lead to the wings (ie. 100m from goal) at kickouts etc (ala dare I say it Tarrant did once or twice), with Cloke dropping back to fill the spot he's created.
Also in there on the HFF are medders (Cracker season so far, rarely beated one on one, who would've thought that two years ago!) +/- one of Thomas / Didak / Holland / Leon who aren't in the midfield and who aren't on crumbing Roccs duties.
IF the opened system worked well you could even put Rus in there also (when he's fit), same a Reid but alternating leading long / different wing / restin gon bench. But the whole thing relies on Rocca GS, Cloke 40-50 out and leading up the ground, and the midfield running running running forward when we have the ball and back when we don't - cause an open forward line can hurt you on the rebound.
And other rotations need to be worked as well (ie. Medders at CHF worked for parts of the last 4 weeks) so oppositions don't get too good at stopping you, but I think the above set up should be our main forward set up, particularly at the big grounds like the MCG.
Let's use cloke to deliver the ball quickly to our forwards, stuff run and carry, just mark, kick, mark, goal

Here are some more worrying stats:
Rhyce Shaw averaging 5 errors out of his 22.6 disposals = An error every 4.52 touches.
Shane Obree averaging 4.4 errors out of his 18.4 disposals = An error every 4.18 touches.
Ben Johnson averaging 5 errors out of his 20.5 disposals = An error every 4.1 touches.
Brodie Holland has 3 errors out of his 12 disposals = An error every 4.0 touches.
Harry O'Brien averaging 2.8 errors out of his 11.4 disposals = An error every 4.07 touches.
Dane Swan averaging 5.4 errors out of his 24.2 disposals = An error every 4.48 touches.
Marty Clarke averaging 3.3 errors out of his 14.7 disposals = An error every 4.45 touches.
Nick Maxwell averaging 3.2 errors out of his 11.2 disposals = An error every 3.5 touches.
Paul Medhurst averaging 5.2 errors out of 16.2 disposals = An error every 3.12 touches.
Travis Cloke averaging 4.8 errors out fo 12 disposals = An error every 2.5 touches.
Alan Didak is averaging 5.6 errors out of 23 disposals = An error every 4.1 touches.___________________________________________________________
Other things:
--Very shocked to see Medhurst averaging that many errors, but he has made up for it, as has Didak. Judging by the error stats, we have to get the ball in the hands of Heath Shaw, Scott Pendlebury, Dale Thomas, Scott Burns, Tarykn Lockyer, Leon Davis and Josh Fraser.
--Alan Didak and Leon Davis are averaging more clearances than Shane Obree, Dane Swan and Scott Pendlebury.
--Outside of our defenders (who's stats are boosted by spoils, kudos to all of them in this department though), Scott Pendlebury, Scott Burns, Dale Thomas and Tarkyn Lockyer are leading the way for 1%ers.
--Obree and Rhyce Shaw are leading the way for first possessions.
--Going inside 50 - Medhurst, Johnson, Didak, Rhyce and Cloke are leading the way, but they're also near the top for errors. Therefore we need to make a chance and get Leon, Lockyer, Pendlebury (ranked 8th, 11th and 12th respectively) to start kicking it inside 50. This would explain why our delivery to our forwards is struggling. Though both Medhurst and Didak are exceptions, because we know they're good disposers.
--Dale Thomas is averaging the second most contested possessions at the club, highlighting the attention he is recieving, and putting emphasis on the fact that he is not an outside player... which we already knew. On the contrary: Ben Johnson is averaging just 0.5 contested possessions, right near the bottom of the list. Perhaps he's not adding the "inside" hardness we thought he could.
--Despite the perception that he's been poor, Rocca is averaging 2.6 goals per game, on track for almost a 60 goal season without finals.
__________________________________________________
BENCHMARK
--Despite having 7 players averaging 5 or more errors per game, 2 of them have only played one game. On the other hand, Geelong has 11 players making 5 errors per game, with 8 of them playing every game.
--Geelong is only averaging 2.4 more inside 50s than us.
--We are averaging significantly more hitouts, 1st possessions and clearances than Geelong, which was where we got spanked by them last year.
--We have been averaging 4 less tackles, however our opponents have averaged 12 more tackles than theirs.
CONCLUSION BASED ON STATS = The obvious problem is hitting targets. If we start hitting targets, and we get back the 2007 work ethic... we are going to win the premiership.

That a good post ktszyu1.
Its a real worry having Johnson going inside F50, his kicks are never too advantage, we all know Obree ca be a turn over machine but i think he has improved.
Dids and Medders are fine, because they will be taking risks to produce scoring options.
Cloke needs to slow doen and be more precise, he is wasting the ball going long to rocca all game.
Not sure about Racer going inside F50 too much either, this is where they are not hunting in packs, Racer and Johnson should be offloading the ball to players who have the delivery skill.

essendon will try to run us off our feet. they will keep running and running. they move the ball very, very quickly. you will notice they are very reliant on handball but are not actually very good at it. they make poor decisions when trying to move it on quickly. vs the saints, there were many instances where they just did not find the target. the saints should have hurt them more than they did.
even though they might not appear to have a forward structure of note, they still manage to get a few goals - the smaller guys like lovett etc. countering that, they do leak goals with fletcher and michael pretty slow these days. having mobile forwards will be an advantage for us.
i wouldn't make many, if any changes.

Geelong had the perfect game plan for the Bombers, congest the middle. The result being they (Essendon) were always ubder pressure and couldn't move the ball quickly. A fast team moving slowly is a losing formula for them, but a winning formula for the Pies.
