Marat Safin defeated four-time champion Andre Agassi in five sets in the semi-final of the Australian Open tonight.
Safin won 7-6 7-6 5-7 1-6 6-3 and will now play either Roger Federer or Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain in Sunday's final.
This was a real heartbreaker for the former champ, losing both opening sets 8-6 in tie breakers, courageously winning the third, 7-5, then racing through the 4th., 6-1 only to go down in the 5th.
Saffin wins marathon

What a game. I have to say that the standard of the mens tennis at the aussie open is the best I've seen. When Safin is in form (and mentally switched on) he is in the top 3 in the world. I love this bloke on the court. He's entertainment. He screams and yells when he's down and when he's on...he's unstoppable.
I want Safin to win it but I think there may be a fellow named Federer who is in the way. What a final it will be though. Tennis needed some quality and it's arrived.

Safin is a very talented player as evidenced by his demolition of Sampras in the US Open final a few years ago.
Full credit to Andre though as he is in the twighlight of his career and Safin should be at his peak yet Andre probably should have won the match. Afterall he had set points in the first and second sets and went on to win the third and fourth sets.

Andre is a better player now than most of his career. He will be remembered as one of the greatest players of all time and deservedly so. As I posted earlier...what a match. This Aussie open is the best standard of tennis I've ever seen.

I think Andres peak was about 2 or 3 years ago when he and Sampras were trading blows. He is still very good now and a professional but i think past his peak. Having said that he is still good enough to mix it with any mens player going around.
