I am so sick of our wide around the flanks game it is so predictable. I think we used the corridor twice yesterday.

Ratten did a Leigh Matthews and forced us out there. Any coach can do it to any side, particularly one which is getting done at stoppages. What Ratten did was standard fare and nothing extraordinary, which is not to say it's not a good strategy for a side like Carlton against us. The problem is our young side lacked the discipline to tighten up at the stoppages and to hold their nerve to overcome that tactic. A lack of tough games has IMO made us brittle. This will probably be the best wake up call we get all season - when things don't click and sides deploy the CHB wall we have to win through discipline, not fancy BS.

We had far too many loose players who forgot about the team and their role in it. The flair last year was okay because it was buttressed by disciplined senior players. But party tricks don't win tough defensive games against defensive game plans such as those employed by Matthews and Ratten. Hopefully this stage in our development doesn't last too much longer.

and ludicrously, on more than one occasion we kick to the outer wing where the only black and white jumpers to be seen were in row a, b, c, d ....

and you would have thought the scum had an infectious disease judging the space our fellas gave them.

On Nathan Brown up forward.....

It was a clever move by MM to put Brown forward. It payed early dividends with 2 goals.


However, MM's big mistake was leaving him there. It was a suprise move which no one anticipated...but once the gloss wore off, he had to go into a defence which was overcome by easy and quick entries.

Harry was getting smacked...and shouldve been replaced after 4 goals. I think he wouldve been far more suited to Fisher who was giving Maxwell the biggest bath of all time. It was an embarrassing hiding that Maxwell was copping.


Both their forwards were on top, and our best defender was sitting in the goalsquare alongside Rocca who was been swamped by 3. It made our forward line very very top heavy...especially since Wood started up forward as well.


Why we thought we could start Rocca, Wood, Brown, Cloke all forward is beyond me...especially since Carlton have pace and run off half back. Even Maxwell went forward at stages.


We were too tall all day. We needed to go smaller to stop the run. They were getting out of our forward line with ease and complacency. Then they had so many guys streaming forward. Our talls had no answers.


Rocca shouldve stayed goal-square. Wood shouldve perhaps plugged a hole across half back. Maxwell benched (he didnt get a touch for something like 3 quarters). Brown on Fevola, Harry to Fisher (or vice versa).

Cloke pushing higher up the ground. We struggled to clear it out of defence and needed a leading target. Medhurst, Didak and Davis closer to home, and Swan on the ball, instead of having Swan (who cant kick for goal to save his life) up forward and Didak on the ball.


We mixed with our structure and got smacked. Perhaps we shouldve just gone about this game the way we go about all other games.

41 for 15 premierships if you count 1896. It was the first ever 'Grand Final' as South and Collingwood finished the year on identical points and goals and thus it was decided that a playoff was needed. This was played at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground to such a large crowd that the newly formed VFL in 1897 decided to permantly adopt a finals structure for the new league.

This is such an important part of our club's history. We played our first game in 1892 and within just 5 seasons we were the best team in Victoria. Even now the club does not properly recognise this magnificent effort by the first Magpies. Partly because it would artificially boost the tallies of teams like Fitzroy, Essendon, Carlton and Melbourne, two of which are already ahead of us on VFL/AFL tally anyway.

For thoes who disagree with MM regarding Brown on Fev, you have to be reminded, Brown is a Key CHB, His opponents all big and strong - Pav, Brown and Richo, Fevs fast on the elad, he would of looked simply stupid. Fev had 5 great passes at him which he convereted for goal. No one would have been able to stop that. I blame our lack of midfield pressure.
The whole team just did not have any fire.
Our forward entries were woefull.
Worst game since the Brisbane lions game.
We must start thinking about recruiting some proper midfielders, we looked pathetic there today.
So dissapointing!

On a different note .... sure Fev is doing ok at the moment , but what happens next time he F#cks something up off the field.

Surely its only a matter of time , will the Carlscum give him his marching orders and boot him out as they have threatened after his public urination ?

Before some of you get too hysterical.
1. Carlton always lift against us, just as we lift against them.
2. We have beaten Carlton when we were crap and they were good, just as they have beaten us when we were good and they were crap.
3. Carlton had a massive motivation not to lose a record 15th game.
4. We had something of a let down with Scotty withdrawing from his 250th.
5. We won't play that badly again.

Couldn't have put it better. I've been to so many Pies v Blues games to know anything can happen, regardless of respective ladder positions.
There were ordinary players all over the ground. Not sure if anyone else could have stopped Fev but was disappointed that no one was given a go until it was over. If it was Rocca having a field day like that, you can bet there would have been 2-3 Blues spoiling him everytime. The Blues were good and with the 50/50s bouncing their way, together with straight kicking, confidence followed. Also wondered where JA was. He had a pretty good game last week.
Hopefully that is out our system and we can get back to hard, fast accountable football, especially considering the next 5 opponents.

The corridor can be just as predictable. It's not the route, but the execution. I just think we did not execute our game plan which uses the flanks because it defends the middle. But we didn't defend the middle yesterday - we got smashed there. The MM game plan only starts using the corridor once we get on top of a side or if we are in sparkling form. It admittedly looks ugly when we're losing because the defenders just sit in the hole and run the ball back out through the guts.

Not having a go at you mate, but it is a fair question to ask how many people were sick of our game plan after beating Sydney and WC in the finals last season. It's a bloody hard game plan to execute and just as hard to beat when we execute it properly. If discipline and leadership drops away then it's probably the worst game plan of all to deploy.
