We worked hard, but were never really on song at any stage. We got done at the stoppages too often (we missed Brodie here - ok, I've called for his head recently, but we do miss him in close), and they simply outran us. Their defence, too, was sensational - Matthew Egan is a gun, and Scarlett very, very good.
I think, in hindsight, Ben Reid would have been a better option than Rocca. He's a different type of forward, a better runner (something we lost with Pebbles today). But that's for the future.
No stars today, just hard workers. Travis was great, exceptional, really pleased with his progress. Burnsy and Licca were very good, Licca his best all year, Tarks serviceable, and Goldsack and Marty Clarke showed some good signs.
Looking forward to an injection of freshness from Bucks, Clement, Presti, Rhyce (can't wait to get his run back) and, dare I say it, Guy Richards. We need someone, someone, who have half a fitness base. Bryan lost me today. I was a fan after his first two matches, but since? Well, he's left a bit to be desired. Lacks fitness, IMO, and certainly pace, needing to do more around the ground. I'd be tempted to run with Fraser in 95% of the ruck, and Reid/Rocca relieving him.
On the 'to be demoted list' is Paul Medhurst - started well but, gee, come on Meddles, you need more than five touches a game to hold your place, particularly when they aren't goals! Good start to the game but faded badly. Sam Iles was quiet and is probably the one to make way for Rhyce. Bryan I mentioned above. The rest were all ok, but no stars.
Harry O'Brien lowered his colours today, but he kept trying and trying, and from a youngster, that's all we can ask. He will have his on and off days in the formative years.
O'Bree deserves a special mention for mine, he was great again today. Well played mate. Pendles and Daisy were good and serviceable respectively.
Finally (player wise), onya, Jonno. 150 inspirational games.
We're a better side than that, and at our best, we can beat Geelong, though I'd prefer not to play them. They're good. But we're far from done with, especially considering our draw.

Well first on the Eagles...yes we won, but they were still clearly the better side.spoljar wrote:I understand and agree to a point regarding the players to come back Zakal. It will certainly help to strengthen the spine a fair bit and give a little more run. I still believe the amount of passengers we had killed us today.
However I remember not too many were allowing the Eagles the same luxury with injuries last year when they had 8 of their best 22 out when we beat them last year.
But yeah, for one of the first time this year its very easy to identify who had poor games. Rocca, Medhurst, Bryan and Harry all had absolute shockers. Swan was down on his usual output, as was Breezy and Fraser (in terms of damage). Neither Didak or Leon provided any real spark.
It was all well and good for Clokey to dominate, Tarks and Wakes to mop up down back, and Heath Shaw to be his usual reliable self.....but to paraphrase Jock...its a game of one-on-ones, and if you lose too many, you wont win the game. Proved that beyond doubt today.

Same here bro, bummers are pinheads...westernpie wrote:Yeah like most people I can deal with the loss today, but to lose to The Dons next week would be hard to cop
Most hated AFL team = Essendon.
But on another point if thats what the team at the top of the ladder, 2 games clear (now 3) and at full strength has to offer, I wouldnt mind playing them again come finals time.

Agree with you there. Interesting point you make regarding Didak and Leon. You can see that Dids is still not 100% match fit and Leon unforntunately had most of his shots on goal from acute angles. I think the question of "can you have Medhurst, Leon and Dids in the same side" has been answered. A big no!Zakal wrote:Well first on the Eagles...yes we won, but they were still clearly the better side.spoljar wrote:I understand and agree to a point regarding the players to come back Zakal. You can almost say that you cant really have O'Bree, Licuria and Holland in the same side. You become very one dimensional and predictable.

Malthouse said it was one of our poorset efforts for 2007- true!
I would drop Bryan and play Reid at full-forward with Pebs as the second ruck- he has a physical presence that Bryan and Richards fail to exhibit.
He could give Fraser 5-7 minutes rest a quarter and would run into some form around the ground.
Medhurst will be in possession of a Willy jumper if he continues to fly for improbable marks like today.
Our small forwards should start up around the 50 and race towards the goals when we are in possession.
I think Bucks as a 'floater' across half-forward is a key component of our premiership hopes. Get it to him 4 times a game and lock in 4 goals- no sweat!
With Presti, Jimmy, Rhys, Bucks, Reid & possibly Cox, we can only get better ; Im glad in a way we didnt knock em off today- the press would have been all over our prospects if we had.

OUT:
Bryan
Medhurst
Iles
IN:
Reid
Cook
Lonie
Bryan looked unfit today and it cost us. Rocca and Cloke could ruck for five minutes a quarter each and we could still have Reid and one of them as tall targets in the forward fifty. Also Reid is fast, he could have put a bit more pressure on Scarlet. Lonie can come in for Iles, especially if he can get his kicking penetration back, and Cook would provide more of an option across half back and in the midfeild than Medhurst is able to. Reid would benifit a lot from being a third tall behind Rocca and Cloke.
Those would be my changes. Time to send a signal to Richards and Bryan: One of you stand up, or forget about putting on the Black & White. Reid can ruck a bit at throw ins too. I saw Cloke used as a negating ruck in at least one game last year and he did well, he won't win taps but he is great off the deck and a vicious tackle, we could do worse. Fraser, Rocca Cloke, Reid. The thing to like about those four names in one team is that they can play a variety of positions.
As for the game, Cloke was our best, Scarlett was theres. Both teams applyed good pressure, the Cats were a bit more confident to pass it around a bit more than us in close to work the ball out, we where in touch the whole game, I thought we could have gotten up if we had managed to crumb a few, I mean if we had crumbed 2 that would have been enough because when we could'nt crumb we not only didn't get goals, it got rebounded by them and they scored a few.
