I think our season ended when Taz missed the kick with 42 seconds left against North in Rd 4. Not that the loss was his fault, it wasn't, but if that kick went straight we were 2 and 2, we'd beaten the undefeated Kangas and the hated blues, with the last quarter of Rd 1, and a lucky McLeod kick the only dark spots.

That would've made the Essendon game a whole helluva lot easier, and removed the excuse of losing Rocca. From there we're in the 8 and the StKilda game would have been played under quite different circumstances, winning that or even coming close wouldv'e made the Freo flogging impossible.

Even so, until the Brisbane game the season had to be counted an improvement on '04, despite the same number of wins we played far better and beat some quality, matching it with all comers apart from the inexplicable Freo game. Look at the quality sides, we came close to or beat West Coast, Adelaide, Port, Sydney, Kangas, Dogs, Geelong, and StKilda. We were within a player or two of being among the best and no one took a Collingwood game for granted.

Then came the Gabba. Since that day we haven't looked like even putting up a fight. What happened between the excellent Port game and the following week?

I firmly believe that after round 14 the powers that be took a hard look at the side, the injuries, the stats, the ladder, the games ahead, and the draft pool for next year and worked out that finishing between 9 and 14 is just plain dumb under the present idiotic system that so richly awards failure and, worse still, so deeply punishes trying to win games with finals out the window. As much as I will ALWAYS be against tanking, it's hard to argue with them, especially as many of those guys see themselves running a business first and foremost and some probably dont even barrack for Collingwood. Wins to Richmond, St kilda, Brizroy and the roos that week probably sealed the deal, as did any injuries or reports we suffered against Port (I cant remember).

But the team that has represented Collingwood football club since then has been far and away the worst I can remember, including the late '90s, 1976, and the mid '80s, (including the awful '84 Essendon prelim at VFL park mentioned above which I too was at). I simply find it inconcievable that injuries or lack of ability has transformed the pre rd 14 team into the disgraceful joke currently using our name.

The players don't have to deliberately lose for Collingwood to be tanking, it only requires the knowledge that the club doesnt care if you win, or that missed tackles won't be punished for a team to dive dramatically, and for reasonable performances to become routs.

Look at the stats, and the views above which say that we didnt really play that badly. We just didnt tackle fiercely. Tat's all it takes. Watch and see how few players are dropped next week for proof.

We ARE tanking, and to lose a potentially great player to another club by winning next week DOES seem rather stupid. The question which remains is how much harm the practice will do to our younger players. Can they recover from deliberately losing and being part of a losing culture?

I guess we'll find out next year. But certainly no team has done anything remarkable after tanking thus far.

Name off the top of your head the past 10 wooden spooners.

Name off the top of your head the past 10 premiers.

Which one is easier?

Go you draft picks.

I'm with Eddiesmith, get over it, look at the bigger picture, stop acting like a bunch of winging dickheads.

Having watched thegame, its clear that certain players have been told they're playing for their careers, and to produce. Jason Cloke is an obvious one and has been fantastic, anyone who still doubts the guys guts and ability is blind. Others like Caracella have obviously been told theyre safe for next year and to just have fun in the last few.

Certain players chased and tackled, others simply watched their men run past them. There is no way in hell that Adelaide is a hundred points better than us, even the side we're currently forced to field.

They are tanking, I've never seen it done so obviously in my life.

But, again, what effect does this have on young players knowing that poor performances will be tolerated under certain circumstances?

My other fear is that we are 'building'. I dont want another year like this one...EVER! If we arent preparing for finals this time next year many heads must roll. We need to start revising our thinking, we need to stop carrying on about bloody flags so much. We have caused this sort of attitude at Collingwood by our incessant carping for a flag, and the way to do that these days (although it's still yet to be proven) is to tank.

What should be important to us, and what we need to get across to the powers at Collingwood that we want, is TO PLAY FINALS EVERY YEAR!!!

If we do that, the flags will follow.

Hopefully they'll change the idiotic system at seasons end, and teams will need to try to win all their games. But either way Collingwood must NEVER tank again. We've done it once, that's enough.

And if we DONT play finals next year, the Collingwood heirarchy needs to know that we WONT accept it. Membership in 2007 must drop to unheard of levels. WE are the members and we want success, which means finals every year, not tanking for flags.

Lucky I only heard it on the radio. Hearing it was bad enough. Seeing it would have been like viewing Derryn Hinch in a shower - AWFUL!

Does anyone remember the wins against WC or Geelong?
No because it doesn't matter in a crap year!

The worst result in a crap year is to get six wins and lose the priority. It doesn't make the year any less crap AND you lose the priority.

If the team and its management tries its hardest even with injuries etc. thats precisely what can happen. It almost did against North and it almost did to the Hawks. If the team doen't try its hardest you may get a blowout as on Saturday but at least you doen't risk the utter stupidity of remaining near the bottom and not getting priority pick.

As for the wooden spoon - won't happen. No matter what Pagan says publicly, he's not stupid enough to forfeit the priority by winning.

I fully believe we are capable of beating the dogs, and it will be a sad day when Collingwood is beaten by Footscray twice in one year, can anyone tell us when this last happened?

But facts is facts, there would be nothing stupider than losing a potential champion to another team for a win in such a dismal season. I just wish we could go out there and be honest about it.

Wouldnt it be great if Eddie announced on Thursday night that Collingwood fully intends to lose to Footscray by a small margin, and then does just that? We announce that we will lead the whole game until the last quarter when we will stop with ten minutes to play! Imagine the stir it would cause? It would also ensure that we are the last team who would get to take advantage of the idiotic system! It would HAVE to change after that, especially if the doggies got into the finals as a result! Imagine the noise the team they displace would make? Imagine the hope it would give Collingwood supporters for next year?! Imagine how much it would help membership numbers next year, knowing the horrific results of the last two months were not just because we're shite!

Come on Eddie, let's do it, I'll go up to Gold super captains extra membership (or whatever the dearest package is next year) if you do!

Rounds 3 and 18 1998 - Optus Oval and the MCG, the night Willo broke his jaw.

Funny that we are in an identical position to 1998.

Sensational idea, then watch them charge us with bringing the game into disrepute, fine us millions and strip us of our draft picks
