Was best on ground last night.
He is mobile and a decent kick. Can take a mark too.
He's not a ruck so we can't play him at the centre bounce too often, but he is a follower. He had 13 handballs in link up play.
23 touches, 10 marks and a goal was excellent.

Yep, that one game he played last night actually shifted my view of him. That was a big showcase of his versatility and swing man value.

Being nominated as one of the best in a winning side in a qualifying final is not an average footballer. At the risk of being repeating myself he's not there to kick the goals. He's there to open up the opportunities for the other forwards like Cameron, Daniher and Hipwood. His role is virtually identical to the Leigh Brown role, a role few of us appreciated at Collingwood until we went from a premiership team to also rans. If anything McStay is a better footballer than Leigh Brown because he's a bit more mobile and a better kick.

I’ve seen the future. McStay will be our 2023 version of Leigh Brown.

Ended the game really strong in the ruck. Got in their best players.
First time I’ve really watched him outside of against the Pies and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. We haven’t had a genuine swing man for a while. Will add something! I’m at ease with this one.

Im at ease with the fit into our senior side but I’m not sure about the reported length of the deal ( still only speculation anyway ) He’s actually got quick hands and decent awareness for a big bloke and seems a reasonable shot on goal. You measure players by their output against good teams or their efforts in big games and on last nights effort, he ticked the boxes.
Apparently, he was across the line back in April, so I think we need to stop thinking that Grundy is going simply to accomodate McStay. I would suggest a watch this space to see who comes in SHOULD Grundy leave and Im tipping it will be a far bigger name than McStay ( it could also be another 12 months away but that’s a different puzzle to piece together )

Good mark, kick & decision making.

Not a ruckman but can be used as last resort.

Only weakness is lack of pace.

For his size the fastest big man I have seen was Paul Salmon.
I term the current Collingwood attack based strategy “Unceasing Waves” like on a stormy and windy day with rough seas. A Perfect Storm ☔️

I'm glad you understand why we want him, because I just don't get the excitment, or the size of the reported salary he has signed on for. As I have postulated on elsewhere on this forum, the forwards already at Collingwood in Mihocek, Johnson, Darcy Cameron and Henry I rate as being better options up forward to Dan McStay. Hence I'm guessing that Collingwood see him as a potential replacement for Roughead as the backman to compete with the opposition gorilla forwards and so release Darcy Moore to be a more attacking option off the halfback line than on the full back line. I see that as more likely than a reincarnation of the Leigh Brown role, although I know Fly McRae did say he frets about who could replace Mihocek if he is injured.
That said last night's game by McStay was the best game he has played this year but I suspect that is because its a lot easier to play a roving ruckman's role than as a key forward.
If McStay is a definite recruit to Collingwood then I struggle to see the attraction of Port Adelaide's Frampton? I suspect that Collingwood's apparent interest in Frampton is more due to the likely departure of Brody Grundy from the club for reason's I just can't fathom.

We have one in our own backyard, Darcy Moore.

FWIW I don't think Frampton has anything to do with Grundy staying or leaving. It's common knowledge that our list is deficient of tall forwards and defenders. I hope McMahon and Kelly get new contracts because those two are about all we have coming through on the list. Charlie Dean is recovering from a serious foot injury and Begg is too raw to have any real prospects of regular football in the next two years. Frampton has been slowly developing in the two Adelaide teams, but hasn't done enough to get a regular game. However at 25 his best football is ahead of him if he can stay on a senior list and Collingwood is one of the few teams in need of big men. I haven't a clue whether he's a forward or a defender from the little I've seen of him. I'm guessing they're looking him as a potential tall defender. At this point of time it's all speculation. McStay is the only one we have locked in for 2023.
