It was a good win but not a great win. For three quarters, we were pathetic and second to the ball. Did anyone notice the hardball gets at 3/4 time. Turned it on and got the 4 points in the last and I guess at the end of the day, that's what's its all about! Its amazing what happens though when you go long and direct and occassionally go down the corridor!
Great to see that Daisy and Pendles wont suffer second year blues too much. Clemo is still and absolute star and Heater is going to be a great player for us! I thought the forward line actually functioned reasonably well considering some of the delivery and Bucks and Dids should make a heck of a lot of difference in there too.
Unfortunately, you can see tha we still have this love obsession with the wing! Skills are still overall quite poor and the decision making at times is not much better. I will mark two players that should be delisted at the end of the year! Richards, now in his seventh season of AFL has not bloody learnt a thing anout ruckwork and is not even worth the paper that his name is printed on. Lonie, not only sleeps with the lights on but also sleeps with his eyes open, just in case!

I'm just home. Long day. Rather tiring. Not to mention the emotional rollercoaster the match produced! Had a somewhat sore throat after it.
I think the best thing to do is just celebrate the win. The way we played in the first three quarters, if we repeat that against any of the really good sides, we'll pay. Heavily. North held us goalless in the 3rd quarter but could only kick 1.5 themselves. They left the door just a teeny weeny bit open. Just enough.
But, oh, that Shannon Grant miss! Got back to the pub afterwards with a grin and the blokes wanted to know why I was smiling. The match was on delay, you see, and they hadn't heard the result. So, I told them. The publican had to close the bar because all those jaws hitting the ground simultaneously caused a fair bit of damage! It should reopen sometime next week.
Forget blaming the umpires for anything. Sure, they were inconsistent and there were plenty of "soft" frees but we benefited from some and North benefited from others. It evened out over the match.
The real problem we have is that downright idiotic "chippy" gameplan we use so much. We played it for three quarters and got nowhere. The direct, straight down the guts gameplan which we used in the last quarter is the most effective gameplan we have but it seems to be dragged out only as a last-gasp, desperation, nothing left to lose, Plan Z. The absolute last resort. Why this is the case, I have no idea. The last few years should have taught the coaches that we're actually a very good side when we go down the guts, especially with Rocca at FF. So, blame the coaches for not using it as Plan A, Plan B and Plan C first. Maybe they are just slow learners. Sometime around the year 2525, the lightbulb ought to go off in their skulls.
Anyway, as I said, just celebrate the win.
Kudos to one of our most maligned players, though. Lonie. Copped one hell of a knock from a "shepherd" laid on by the opposition. Didn't see who hit him but he went down like a tonne of bricks. To his credit, he got back up a couple of minutes later and proceeded to let some of the North blokes know he was still there. I've never seen Lonie actually go after blokes before but he did today. Laid on some magnificent tackles afterwards, too. Maybe now that he's been hit hard and knows he can bounce back, he might start using his strength as well as his skill. It could be the making of the bloke.

And I had the pleasure of witnessing close up one of the most brilliant dummy-spits you are ever likely to see.
We've been bloody pathetic to 3/4 time. Miserable, downcast faces everywhere along level 2 in the Ponsford. Discussion was on how long it would take for Malthouse to get the sack. Consensus was round 6.
Anyway, early last quarter. We kick a goal, North rebounds and scores straight away. It looks all over red rover.
This bloke had had enough. He gets up out of his seat, storms down the aisle to the barrier, grabs his member's cap off his head, chucks it down on to level 1, gives the best ear-reddening, invective-filled, outburst I've heard in many a year, reverses direction and walks back up the aisle waving his arms everywhere, still venting his anger, the effect of which is that this is the worst blah blah blah, useless blah blah blah, effing blah blah blah side he's ever seen (and he wasn't a young bloke, either), he's not putting up with this effing blah blah blah excrement any more, they (presumably the club) can stick their effing blah blah blah team up their posteriors and he wasn't coming back.
Beautiful dummy spit, mate!
I must admit, I wondered later what he was thinking once he heard the final score!

One moment summed up the game for me, 8 points behind... centre clearence went stright up in the air a little bit collingwoods way... straight to grant who was under it.. daisy was bout 20m off the pack, worked his arse off to make the contest, chucked his little frame in there as if he didnt know of reprocussions and caused a spillage, resulted in a collingwood goal, and for me play of the day. Sums up what most of us must learn... its not what you got, its how you use it.
Go pies, along way to go in 07.

Why blame the coach for the "chipping" gameplan ? I doubt MM wanted it, sometimes the players just dont do what the coach instructed. After the 3qtr time blast the players started playing direct which is what MM wanted from the beginning. I doubt MM instucted Lonie to kick short to the boundary.

Leon Davis not receiving a free kick in front of goal was an attrocious decision and inexcusable on the umpires part.Even the commentators were saying it was bordering on being reportable. Therefore it was only fair that Shannon Grant miss that goal.
If Ryan Lonie continues to get a game after his lily-livered effort yesterday, and especially taking into account his efforts right throughout the pre-season, then I think questions need to be asked.
I just hope it is not a reflection on the depth of available talent in our club.
He is extremely one dimensional and continually turns the ball over, especially when under pressure.
We play the Weagles next week, Ryan Lonie would not make their final 30, this places an unfair burden on his team mates, who in effect have to carry him. I would have thought that there would not be a place for someone like that in this modern game.
I love this club and really feel for those blokes who week in week out give everything they have got for this great football empire.
If us sitting on the sidelines can see what Lonie is about then why can't the so-called experts.?
On a positive note, what a first game by Paul Medhurst.

I dont think there has been much mension either of Rocca in the last quarter, when we kicked a couple of goals he was really trying to spur on the crowd. He was asking us to get behind them by hand movemetns when the ball was going back to the middle, i think its showd at the end when they came and thanked the supporters that this club is heading at into a new era. The players love the crowd lifting. We are a team that will require a lot of quick goals by the look of it this year. So when we get a run on its important that we really do get behind them.
The boys coming over to thank the supporters at the end, I dont know who told them to do it but it was fantastic to see. Daisy was the one at the front, dare i say it, it was very melbourne victory style.

That and another incident earlier impressed me. Archer picked up the ball near the 50 arc in the roos defence and started to charge straight at Lonie. It happened right in front of where I was sitting. Now I'm a similar size to Lone's and if I saw archer building up a head of steam running straight at me, I'd be packing. Lonie just kept going straight at him and wrapped him up in a great front on tackle as Archer clearly thought he'd just run straight thru him.Cannibal wrote: Kudos to one of our most maligned players, though. Those are the ones that show courage IMO, when you've got time to think and shit yourself but do it anyway.
Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down.

Had something like 24 possies at 3/4 time and finished with 27. Wouldnt be suprised if it was Licca or Burnsy.Cam wrote:I'd love to know who kept a rampaging Simpson quiet in the last.
Like i said in my pre match discussion.
Our average is better than their best, which is the was IMO.
We need to address a few things, such as stuffing around with it 65 m out from the defensive goals, and a few changes to the side.
