... then again, Pakistan's fine efforts have been rewarded with an easy victory. They won with 1/201 from just 25.3 overs by 21 runs on the DLS method.
Fakhar Zamran has thrashed his 4th century against NZ in a year to be the clear POTM with a swashbuckling 126* from 81, NZ were very, very lucky it rained so much - they were going to have their 402 target run down comfortably by a much more gifted team. Babar Azam was chortling along on 66* from 63 at the other end, not even out of first gear.
With the benefit of hindsight, this shows NZ's batting problem:
In the other game, Australia easily bundled England out (and out of the World Cup) on a difficult wicket. The 287 target was always beyond England, who were bowled out for 253. Zampa was POTM (again). Smith, Marnus and Green just did way too much on a two-paced wicket for England to ever be in the chase.
So, NZ are in real trouble, now. Along with Bangladesh and England - second-last and last, respectively - NZ are the only team at the 2023 World Cup to be on a 4-game losing streak. Their losses have been to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th teams. There is a message for NZ cricket in that - they seem plainly a second-tier team at international level and look like they are shortly going to be overtaken by Afghanistan and Pakistan in the general order of things (if not in this tournament).
NZ and Pakistan are each on 4 wins - but they are the only 2 teams to have played 8 games and Ahghanistan has 4 wins from 7 games. NZ should still get to make up the numbers and "earn" the right to be bundled out by India is the first of the finals - they have Bangladesh to come - and even with their general lack of any international-standard talent, NZ should be able to win that one. Afghanistan will have really earned the right to a place in the finals if they get there - their remaining games are against Australia and SA. They have to win both to be guaranteed of finishing ahead of NZ. Personally, I think they are an outside chance of doing just that - their bowling lineup can wreak genuine havoc in Indian conditions.
Meanwhile, at the business end of the table, India has won all 7 of their games, South Africa 6 and Australia 5 of theirs. India and Australia are the only teams on 5 game (or in India's case, better) winning streaks.
Tonight, we are going to have a preview of the likely Final, when SA take on India at Eden Gardens. Hopefully, we get a pulsating spectacle. 7.30 pm AEDST.

It looked like NZ were going well but there was a very short boundary on one side and, as Williamson admitted in his post-game remarks, NZ thought they needed 450 on that wicket.
