Don't really know anything about Lever. Is he a genuine key position player or a Goldsack / Dunne type? If he's the former, we could definitely use him, if he's a flanker / occasional KPD, then no way.

He's 194cm but young and still developing physically. He only weighs 85kg
That makes him slightly taller than Goldsack and Dunn.
Same height as Alex Rance and similarly athletic. But Rance is 93kg. Like Rance he is a great intercept mark.
2cm shorter than Daniel Talia. Weight 95kg
1cm shorter than Ben Reid. Weight 102kg?
Sam McLarty is 193cm and 93kg supposedly.
So there is a bit to work with, but he's not the messiah.

Whether its Adelaide or another club, I believe the best approach will be to package up both James Aish and Tim Broomhead to either

A) - Help secure Jake Lever
B) - Grab ourselves a late 1st round to early 2nd round draft pick

I don't hold any great grudge against either Aish or Broomhead but I think for us to move forward we need to make a realistic call on where these guys sit.

To me they almost sum up our club across the last 2-3 years. Moments of brilliance and excitement, enough to keep you interested, but mostly a tale of almost but not quite or an injury report.

While these two have some value on the market and still could become solid players, we have a lot of depth in their position and I think we need to cash in on this.

I'm happy to leave it to our recruiting department to know what to do. After all, they did such a sterling job for us last year bringing in Mayne on $500,000 pa for 4 years. :?

^I think Gubby Allan can claim that one. Hine was only offering $300-350k per season and for a shorter time frame from what I gather.
That was Gubby 'making an impact'. Hope he never sets foot back in the place.

Yep. This looks to have been almost solely Gubby's decision. The fact that we haven't played him basically confirms it.

That's a problem though. And if Buckley stays on, he's going to need to demand more of a role in recruiting if he disagreed with that deal. We need a recruitment department, but in the end it's the coach who is held to account for poor results.

Yeah, but why was Hine into him in the first place?

Unless you demand 100% success from our recruiters, i think you would have to agree, our recruiting has been first rate. i'm not talking about the trading high draft picks for great players (as in the Adams, Treloar, Aish type trades). I'm talking about free agency and minor trading. This is about building out the depth of the list and hopefully finding a gem or two who become even better than just the last couple selected.

First you have to realize that the secret to great recruiting at this level is finding the players who are under performing at their current club. Not an easy science and certainly not an exact science.

I think that getting guys like Crisp, Greenwood, Howe, Varcoe, Dunn and Hoskin-Elliot are good examples of very good results in this area. either recruiting did a great job, or Buckley has been able to get the best out of them because ALL of these players are playing A LOT better for Collingwood than they did the year before they left their former club.

I think on the negative, i think you'd have to say White and more recently Mayne are clear busts. But it could just have easily have been Varcoe or Howe. you see you have to take chances in this part of the market.

If you expect 100% success, you will always be able to be critical.......

we'll see what becomes of Schade

We can nearly forget about landing Lever. We are at best 3rd in line for him.
Melbourne are heavily into him and rumours have it are prepared to give up a player and 1st round draft pick.
Next in line is Carlton who may be interested in trading Gibbs to land Lever which would suit both sides
We might be praying that he nominates us and then hope neither of the other clubs up there offers to blow us out of the water. We can't afford to get shafted again and be in a pissing contest like we ended up in the Treloar deal. As good as player he is and the upside 2 X 1st round draft picks was overs.

^^^ If we'd taken the next Freeman and Scharenberg with those two picks, giving the two picks away to Treloar was, in substance, the same as giving GWS about pick 70 for him. On the other hand, if we'd taken the next Reid and Cloke, I agree that it would have been overs.
