Forcast for tonight is wintery conditions with showers, hail and high winds. Maybe the football Gods are finally smiling on us?

Our only hope is the weather. If it pisses down all night, we're a chance.

Unfortunately you are right here. It shows a major deficiency in the Pies team, especially in terms of disposal, that we need poor weather to even up a contest. I know we have won in the dry etc etc, but mostly, we do perform better when the match becomes a slog.

Surely McG and Shack would be better suited tonight than O'Bree and Rowe. Or even Woey - is he going to be suited to a tough slog continually putting your body on the line? His kicking skills will be important though, which we would have to be close to the worst in the league at. Horses for courses policy?

Cam wrote:Brisbane has a solid defense and play with initiative. But they also have three more cream of the crop types than every other team. $200,000 each on top of an normal 150-200 grand wage that the other clubs can afford their better players allows them to keep these extra talented guys on their list.
I don't think this salary cap issue holds much strength anymore. It was analysed that most of their superstars get paid way less than if they were playing for another club. Aker said his salary is around 290 K, and that Leppitsch could have gone to another club for much higher salary. Surely they are worth more than that.

Sure they get an advantage ... but not much as you would imagine. Their players are more commited than others and they play with more passion - we just don't want to admit it. Most stay for the team for lesser salaries to play for the team and they play well together. That's the secret of their success. We know that in our hearts but just don't like to admit it.

I reckon McGough should be played. Take O'Bree or someone similar out. Has the kid even had a chance against Brisbane, since that game in 2002, Rd 8?

Agreed, foreigner. The $600k must obviously help but the real reason they have kept the side largely intact is because the players want to stay together to win flags. This was mentioned in another thread when the article came out. You are also correct saying that we have trouble admitting it. I admit to being one of those who thought it was their extra money but after reading the article changed my mind. And said so. It's a shame so many prefer to keep their heads in the sand.

It also leads to the inescapable conclusion that those sides which claim to have been decimated by salary cap issues eg Essendon, have, in fact, been decimated by players who are interested only in the money, so have left to get it at another club.

Which leads to the further inescapable conclusion - why would we want to go chasing such blokes when they come out of contract if all they want is big money? I would rather we continue developing our own. You would think they, at least, would want to stick together for the same reason as Brisbane's players. Ther would be more chance of us winning a few flags on the trot developing our own than by buying big money types.

Overnight forecast out here is 2C and SNOW! Got two tonnes of redgum delivered last weekend and have got the wood heater going bloody beautifully. Unfortunately, I can't get down for the match, so must settle down in front of the TV for the delayed broadacst and Nick's Chat for the current scores. Still the forecast for Melbourne is overnight showers, so you might get lucky!

Can't see anything happening to change my pessimistic forecast from yesterday and am resigned to it. I would be happy, though, if the blokes just give it a red hot go. Sort of like how my wood heater is looking right now!
