Oh and also: Wellingham, another fine game young lad. Great to see you kick a goal, a very good one at that. Apart from that brain fade when he went the banana instead of passing it, fine performance mate.
And how good was it to see Thomas play a decent game? Took some contested grabs, laid stacks of tackles, kicked a goal, went for the hard ball, used the ball well. I loved that Mick gave him time in the midfield, I hope it continues. Perhaps he's realised we need a spark in there?

Great to get a win again. It will be good for the boys' confidence. But let's not get carried away. Hands up anyone that thinks on that performance tonight we'd even get within 8 goals of Geelong?
Scotty Burns was an absolute hero tonight, especially when we were fading in the last quarter. Smiles about Wellingham - we've got someone there who can share the midfield load with Pendles. The usual suspects did what was required when needed. Better efforts from Harry O (great goal), Daisy (still faded though - conditioning?), Rhys Shaw, Dane Swan (but still down on what he did last year). Anthony contested and kicked that great first goal. Medders and Leon were spectacular when required. Marty did enough. But Travis Cloke is seriously ready for a run in the twos to try and get some touch back (God I hope he's not like his brothers only to fade away after showing great promise).
There are still quite a few home-truths we need to face up to though. Tonight made it clear that lines will be drawn through the following names at season's end: Wakelin (not surprising since he didn't expect the play this year), Lockyer, O'Bree (well done on 200 games though), Bryan, Johnson, and Scotty Burns will probably hang up his boots. Nick Maxwell had better pull his finger out, because the pen is poised (and Goldsack will improve and return).
Most of all though, whatever semblance of an attractive game plan we had in the finals last year has deserted us completely. We won ugly tonight, and I really mean ugly. Even the Saints almost controlled the corridor. We persist in going around the flanks and holding the ball up. We're not running hard enough into space. Tackling pressure was much better tonight though. We have got to be more direct.
Can we shut Geelong down next week? We have to lift 100% on that effort tonight.

yeah im not sure. But thats what the stat is called "Centre Clearances." I suppose anytime theres a ball up in the centre of the ground (for whatever reason) its a "centre clearance." Theres a hell of a lot more stoppages and boundary throwins than there are goals, so 60 isnt anywhere near enough i wouldnt think.Sachmojo wrote:How could there have been 60 centre clearances? There were only 30 goals kicked plus 4 opening bounces... I'm thinking that's all clearances there.Zakal wrote:pietillidie wrote:We were smashed in the centre clearances apparently but did ok around the ground. Haven't we been doing this all year?Zakal wrote:BBHS wrote:Thought ball was going to get 50 possesions in that first quarter.
Thomas, Pendlebury good games. Dane Swan workman like.
Scott Burns 2 very important goals.
Midfeild where not that bad. Just clearances seem to be an issue.
Still won the game. The saints forwards very ordinary. But so where ours!!!
We just needed to win and we did.
GO PIES
Luke Ball was the issue i think. Take Ball's mammoth contribution out, and i daresay we'd be in front on the clearances. he had 5 in the first quarter...thats a good effort for a game.
EDIT: Actually we won the clearances. Its funny how perceptions and commentator power of suggestion can skew things.
32-28. Without Ball it would have been a thrashing 32-20.
Those numbers are actually the centre clearances only. No idea what the "clearances from stoppages" figures are.
Seems too many to be centre clearances per se...but not enough to be total clearances.

A win's a win, would've been nice to get a larger margin but how many games have we lost in the last 15 minutes of play? At least we held onto this one.
Good to see Daisy and Marty get back some confidence. I really do think our boys are getting back into shape mentally and perhaps physically, hoping they peak at finals time...

Hey mate where do you get your disposal efficiency stats? I noticed you quoted Pendles' earlier.Zakal wrote: yeah im not sure. But thats what the stat is called "Centre Clearances." Also, I've noticed disagreeing Supercoach rankings between sites... He had 123 on footywire but 138 on AFL Gameday Live. Any idea which one is correct?

Im surprised to see so many thinking "we won ugly." I thought it was our best disposal in weeks. Pendlebury at 96%, Leon simply sublime, even Rhyce was hitting targets. and we kicked 16 goals 3 (the rest rushed).
Team average of 75% i think isnt too bad.
49 Clangers.
Geelongs last game was 76%. with 48 clangers.
74% and 45 the week before.
74% and 43 before that.
Tackling was up, contested possessions were up (the hallmarks of intensity) and the disposal was generally pretty good. We did make some notable errors, and obviously we shouldnt be patting ourselves on the back too much ( i want the DE% over 80).

come now, did I specify you?Pied Piper wrote:Come now, when did you last see me bag out even one of our own players?MagpieMad wrote:lmao it was 8-3 at one stage, you can believe the "official" count as much as you like, it usually ain't the real one, but you go tell Rocca, Burns, Johnson and Didak the maggots play a fair game.Pied Piper wrote:Free kick count 21-19 St Kilda's way. Pretty even. The Saints would be howling about the two frees in front that we got late in the third, when they were coming at us, so whatever other mistakes the maggots made, they might just have helped us get out of jail.
seriously it's this very attitude that has seen the game go past them, I am constantly amazed that so called supporters will bag out our own players before they dare bag the maggots, they can go stick their heads back in the sand and pretend there's no problem.
New I'd stir you up with that one Dyso!

just the AFL site. in the "stats" section once the GameDay live part is replaced by the quarter-by-quarter video links and the like. As for the ranking, i reckon if you checked supercoach again soon it would update. I actually posted he was our highest ranked player...but then later on it updated and put Burns in front. PRetty sure when Pendles was top, he was on 123. Maybe coincidence (or perhaps im dreaming hehe) but i reckon supercoach might just be a fraction behind.

that's for sure, showed a few how to run at the ball, put his head over it and turned it in the beginning of the last.Adz wrote:Bryan won't be dropped next week I'll tell you that!
where's Johnson at? looks like he's forgotten how to tackle and tries to go the bump to often.
