Oh Happy Day! Coll d. Ess on the biggest day outside of the finals by 73pts!!!!!
I said on my homepage that after last week's disappointing loss, until the Pies of '08 start putting away the lower teams by 50+ pts they really won't be any threat to teams like Geelong, Hawthorn or the Western Bulldogs, who are all unbeaten so far. And put away the Bummers we did. To give the red and black credit, they did have a few of their better players missing through injury, but f**k that, who cares? Diver Lloyd played and only managed three goals, and was well held by Wakes and Brown for most of the afternoon. Lucas was missing, so they really didn't have a forward line to speak of, and used Mal Michael and Dustin Fletcher, two traditional backmen, to fill in the gap. Both experiments didn't work. Basically, from about halfway through the second quarter, the Pies ran over the top of the Bombers, exposing their pissweak pressure, their inexperienced midfield and the WTF matchups Knights chose to try and curb the influence of Travis Cloke (five goals, career best effort), Medhurst (6 goals, 2 behinds and an Anzac Day Medal for BOG), and Scott Pendlebury, who had a ripper of a game and was unlucky not to be BOG.
Other players who deserve a mention for great games are: Rhyce Shaw, who seemed to be everywhere, especially in the second half, Tarkyn Lockyer, Ben Johnson (a return to great form for him, hope it lasts), Shane O'Bree (he's quiet but gets the job done), Josh Fraser, and Cameron Wood. Nathan Brown and Wakes also did very well to keep Diver Lloyd to three goals, as I think I've already said.
But I must make special mention of Medhurst. Boy has this guy come along since moving over from Perth! Collingwood is making a real player of this guy. No more selfish play, no more prancing around the goal competing with Farmer for the spotlight, at the Pies, this guy takes that spotlight and f**king OWNS it. He is also really showing signs of settling into the team and getting to know his team mates (he hosted the Black and White Show recently, and has the weirdest sense of humour, but you've got to love him. He's a true Pie now). A six goal effort that could have easily been eight if he'd been even more accurate in front of goal, meant that he was my first choice for the medal this year. Travis and Pendles threatened to take the award from Paul for a moment there, but just a moment. Then when he went up to collect the medal, he gave a great, moving speech. Quickly becoming one of my favourite players, Medhurst is the best trade Collingwood has made in at least five years. I just hope Cameron Wood can have the same impact as Medders.
There was a great show of potential from the new boys, too, on such a big stage. Cookie did well through the middle, as did Wellingham, who debuted on the biggest stage outside of the finals, and looked the goods. Nathan Brown, although having a poor first term, livened up and got better over the next three quarters, helping Wakes to curb Lloyd's influence, which wasn't all that flash to begin with. Wood was steady in the ruck, and kicked a goal in the second half. Pendles, as I've said, was unlucky not to have won the ADM for a 31 possession game. Only Daisy was really pretty quiet and even got into a bit of a scuffle with an Essendon player. He almost took a hanger as well, but unfortunately for Daisy, seems to be suffering from the "I've been listening a little too hard to my own hype" season. Let's hope he wises up soon. He can be a game breaker - and is definitely talented and exciting to watch, when he has his head screwed on right. Another usual star is Didak. He and Leon seemed to rotate through the middle and up forward but Didak was off line - not sure if he's carrying an injury? He still did his unselfish bit to set up play like he always does. Heath Shaw had a shocker of a first term but made up for it over the next three quarters. Did some classicly brave Shaw things, like backing into packs and taking marks, so I forgive him for turning it over twice and giving away a free in the first quarter! Marty Clarke seemed a lot more relaxed and with it than in recent weeks, as well.
All in all, it was a complete Black and Whitewash and made me so proud to be a supporter of the best team in the league. Even before the first bounce, their traditional stance during the anthem - with their arms over each other's shoulders - showed the level of unity within the club. I just hope they can carry this week's form into the game against the Dawks next week. Like someone said earlier, the Dons were poor, very, very poor, and teams like Geelong and Hawthorn will not let us have it so easy. We need to play our best and keep up the pressure to be a top four side again. But shit, am I proud. Go Pies. Love ya's all!

Apart from those 2 sitter marks he dropped! He simply had them spent before he took them!!Pied Piper wrote:I agree with you about Pendlebury RudeBoy. He really took it to the next level today and of his 33 possessions I can barely remember him making a mistake, other than duffing a couple of shots at goal.
As much as I enjoyed the scoreline and the endeavour the boys displayed today, it was simply the worst standard of disposal i have seen from 2 teams in an ANZAC day game. Lost count of how many handballs went astray and out of bounds, how many simple shots at goal drifted out on the full, and how many unpressured kicks hit an opposition player on the chest. All in dry conditions.Candles wrote:Great win but let's not get too carried away just yet. Essendon were really awful today, and the number of times they allowed us to have an unmanned player on centre wing was unbelieveable.
The real test for us arrives as early as next week and continues for the following couple of games. Should we emerge intact from those then your unbridled optimism may be on the money.
Of course, we don't want to be playing our best football until later in the year, as it is hard to mantain momentum through what might prove a very long and trying season.
But please people, don't let today lull you into a false sense of security, as we played a Dons ourfit minus Davey and Jedda, perhaps their 2 fastest players, serial-pest McVeigh, and Scott Lucas. And why Peverill doesn't demand a spot in that team, only Knights knows. He probably would have played him out of position anyways.
Our great-white-hope in Browny will know all about AFL next week when he lines up on form player Franklin. Make Buddy your Bitch, and the world is your oyster...

What more could you ask for today.
Our disposal and style of play simply got better as the game went on. It is wonderful to see players like Pendles, O'Bree and Cloke find form on what is coming to our toughest run in the season.
Pretty much the first 4 quarter effort of the year. Play like that against Hawthorn and we are every chance.

Um, Kambarker, nicely put - if I may say so myself! (and I did, see above) sorry, but it didn't look like you were quoting me. Were you?kambarker wrote:But I must make special mention of Medhurst. Watching the way the boys lined up arm-in-arm during the last post etc while the young bombers just stood there, I knew we were on!
I actually had a gut feeling during some of the highlights of previous years games today that we were a big chance to win by our biggest margin.
The bombers need to go to the "how to man-up" school. They were as loose as a cheap hooker all day.

very funny - had to break up a fight between two sets of essendon fans in the third quarter. my (don) mate had beer spilt down his back, the spiller (don) kept on giving lip and all hell broke loose. beer everywhere, what a waste! the spiller went home in a rather sorry and damp state at the end of the third, promising that he would be outside gate 5 at the end of the match to kill my mate - we didn't see him by the way.

Hard to take anything out of today, other than a bit of confidence for some players (like Cloke, who finally might feel he can take a mark again).
If we win 2 of our next 3 I will be impressed. Probably be happy with just 1.
We still made some frustrating skill errors. Missing easy handballs for fks sake, not under extreme pressure. We're going to be found out against decent teams, even Carlton showed us up.
Anzac medal - it was Pendleburys if he'd managed to kick straight, 7 votes vs 8 for Medhurst a worthy winner, good reward for a hard worker and passionate player.
Ryan Cook - running out of chances to show something worthwhile
Wellingham - showed enough to justify another go
Heath Shaw - some nasty turn overs, but I forgive you, good otherwise
Clarke - Building back to his potential
Pendlebury - Hitting his straps, we'll see. Good things.
Thomas - Quiet one, tagged strongly
Goldsack - Good going my son, broke your nose, no fear now
Brown - Always looks good, and a season or two away from brilliance
Rocca - Hope you get better soon big fella
Cloke - Pull your head in, and your finger out, boy, you are better than junk time goals
Didak - Always dangerous
Davis - Good day not to be too accurate, decent otherwise
Wakelin - Voice of reason back there, good game
Swan - Mr consistent
Lockyer - Fading this year compared to last. Hit straps mid year hopefully
Medhurst - Great game, obviously, interesting to see how he goes when he gets attention and really has to work through it to get anything
Fraser - Turning into Golliath. Has problems with midgets. Hmm.
Wood - Decent, keep going.
O'Bree - Generally good game, worked hard
Rhyce - Great year so far, tagging and playing off them.
Maxwell - Pretty quiet, popped up here and there
Burns - Where are you killer, put some deep-heat on it, and lets get it on!
Ok, we have the momentum, lets get to steamrolling the giants.

Great game. Great win.
Very pleasing to see the team as a whole applying that suffocating pressure they employed to great effect last year.
Most pleasing of all is that my wife and her whole family are Essendon fans, and they had to sit there watching the Bombers get smashed and me doing hand stands. I'm at peace.

A Collingwood supporter since the egg was inseminated.
