i thought o'bree was great aswell. egan just doesnt attack the ball hard enough when he needs to. the umpiring.. it may have been bad on both sides but i still felt it made the game.

we should have been able to win it, its not an excuse.. but if we didnt have that horrible run of decisions late in the game we would have been 8 points above brisbane rather than level with them.

id like to see- IN: reid OUT: egan

Ok managed to watch the replay. Very unlucky the boys where.
Can blame individuals till the cows come home but was a tough loss.

Cam Wood is getting a lot of love for his 9 hit outs. But Fraser was by far better tonight.

I thought Wood was Stiff with the hitouts but I loved his Spoil and then put his head over the footy and that Bullet pass to fraser over a 50 Meter kick

Did some good things Wood I agree.
Fraser's rucking was better 25 hitouts v 9.

Wood had 10 pos v Frasers 14 and a goal. Although Fraser didn't take catch tonight. Thought he would have been all over it after the bell incident.

Scott Burns was brilliant
28 possies
7 clearances
9 Tackles.
Pendles only had 12 touches and was very quiet. Hope he has a blinder next week.
Medhurst presenting was brilliant. 10 grabs as well. Would have got over the line with a straight kick.
Didak as said before. Brilliant. Got us back in the game.

Had to laugh at all the praise he was getting last week, even his last game wasnt great, it was good for Egan but not good enough and tonight was a bloody disgrace, never seen a player stand back so often, half chase, never put his body on the line in the wet

But Mick should never, ever drop an Irishman for a game in the wet

I think people on this board have to realise that we will not win a premiership with the ingredients that Egan brings to the table. Bad draft pick. Bite the bullet now and give some one else a go as we are wasting our time and a spot in the side with this player! People might say get off the kids back it's only his second game back after a knee reco but even if he starts to come good he hasn't got what we need to be a part of the cogs in this wheel that will win us a flag!

In the cool light of the next day, although it was disappointing to lose a game we seemed to have in the bag, we just couldn't quite ice it in the third quarter there is plenty of upside.

I think Brisbane is a top 8 team and, in my reckoning, that puts us in the top 4.

Again, we missed a couple of key shots (Rocca and Daisy) in the last.

That said, I think we can only improve.

For example:

1) I think Pendlebury is playing at about 40 - 50% of this ability.
2) Our defence (apart from N Brown - star in the making) has not quite gelled yet. Wakes is good but looks a tad slow. Harry is playing at about 60% and Goldsack improved quite a bit from last week but is no more than 50 - 60% of what he can be.
3) Clarke looked a long way off his brilliant best last week.
4) Johnson and Burns - first game back. Burns was terrific, but will only improve with more game time. Johnson was ok. He needs to really work hard to get to his best.
5) Not sure about Egan. He seems to attract a lot of negative comment in this forum. I think that it is unfair to target one player like that. He was pretty good against Freo, but had a poor game against Brisbane. He seemed lacklustre and slow. I would like to see Cox replace him, if Cox is in form, as I see more skill, quickness and upside with Cox. Agree though that this year is Egan's last chance.
6) Lockyer was very brave last night, often filling the hole in front of J Brown, but he is not yet 100%. Congratulations though on the birth of a daughter!
7) Cloke is still warming up. Great to see he has worked so hard on improving his focus and kicking. He will destroy teams when he is up and running. I think he is about 70% at the moment.
8) I hope Reid continues to develop as there is a spot for him.

So, in summary, if Clarke and Pendlebury can reach the level that they showed last year, that would massively improve the side and reduce the burden on O'Bree (great start to the year), Rhyce (is stepping up and did a top job against Black, our nemesis), and the old warrior Captain. And, if the backline can co-ordinate itself a bit better, which will happen over the course of the season, we will improve significantly. This is to be expected with Clement gone and Presti injured. I also suspect opposition teams are dragging Heath Shaw away from where he is most dangerous as a counter attacking player. We need him mopping up in the back 50 and more in the middle, than on the wing.

Positives - Leon Davis is on fire, Didak is not far off his best, Medhurst looks committed and is a fantastic mark, Thomas is his mercurial self, Rocca is injury free, Wood is promising, Fraser looked a 100% better than against Freo and was instrumental in the us getting on top in the third quarter.

Forget the umpiring. While it was overly technical, they were fairly consistent. I have not seen free kicks paid in past years to the incidents involving Lockyer and N Brown in the last quarter. Not sure what either of those guys could have done to avoid those frees. I think that the Goose needs to shift the interpretation of his umpires away from being overly technical to allowing for the players to contest the ball more. It is after all, a CONTACT game. Yes, Kevin Bartlett and Geoff Goos(en), a CONTACT game!

Egan seems to be able to get his hands on the ball ok, problem is the guy has no courage..Its ok to be an outside receiver, all teams need them, but he is far too soft laying tackles, looks like he is scared to me...

The game was a pretty good game though, Umps did slaughter us in last qtr but honestly they had been pathetic for both teams all nite, just a typical effort from the scum in the green... absolutely clueless as per usual

Still we had our chances regardless n while at the time i was pretty disappointed I still think we can hang our heads high, things
certainly dont look bleak

Just hope we can pump those tuggers net week

We didn't close it out, no one to blame but ourselves.

Egan, failed under pressure- not up to AFL standard, pressure shows up the weak links and there were a few that became evident last night.

Dummy spits by Burns- not a good example from the captain.

We all know that the umpires love to penalise Collingwood, we have to stop giving them reason to- the leadership group needs to take control of this, starting with the captain.

All in all a fantastic game of footy to watch, edge of the seat stuff, we can take a lot from that.

Wood is a great addition to the team and his taps were great as well as the smother and other good efforts.

Egan is soft as butter and we drop Lonie for being soft and bring in Egan - both soft - at leats Lonie will run.

Johnson's skills are extremely poor and he turned the ball over too much.

Wakes is about 4 steps too slow and as Brown seems to have found his spot already I think JA will be coming in very soon.

This game was lost as the Lions were comitted to getting to the ball and wining the 50/50 contests in the last quarter.

I saw one passage where Tarks (who had a great game) was simply knocked out f the way and that resulted in a Lions goal.

The Lions are a tough, hard at the ball team and when they got a sniff we could not match their intensity and that is why they won the game.

Things are coming together nicely for the Pies but we need to drop Egan and also Johnson.

was a great game last night! Great atmosphere, lots of pie supporters would of almost thought it was a Magpies home game!

I thought a lot of players played well in the trying conditions last night. should have put them away in the third when we had the momentum. I thought we lacked a big body hard fast lead up player last night especially when cloke hobbled off injured with an ankle injury. Medhurst was virtually playing as centre half forward after half time and he done a great job at it too! but we lacked the hard fast lead from the goalsquare and I think the coaching staff will have to look at bringing in either Reid or Dawes next week. Rocca still has a spot in the side but as a stay at home in the goal square player as we know he can take a contested grab. Cloke is our preferred centre half forward and some times his leads take him up to the wing which is OK as he is the pressure release valve when we are under the pump coming out of defense. Rusling has left a hole in the structure of our side as the fast hard lead up player from the goal square which in hind sight the coaching staff probably thought Ant could fill on the back of his six goal haul. don't get me wrong Rocca will have his day out and kick bags on certain days but we lack a full forward at the moment. Malthouse has to make the decision soon on who that will be Reid/Dawson and let him make that position his.

Also on another sad note when leaving the ground i noticed a few lion supporters trying to sing their song and these guy's didn't know the words to their own song lol  that's terrible. They would sing the start and just mumble the rest that is drisgracfull!

The signs are fantastic for the future. Look the umpiring was terrible last night too but not only against the Pies, Brisi copped some woeful decisions too and these umpires must be addressed on the performance they gave, I feel that they umpired the game seperately, there was no teamwork between them only decisions that confused players and spectators especially in the last 1/4.
But overall we had the chance to shut the door and we did not and you can not afford to do this against a team that fields John Brown at their home ground. Not being able to close out a game, This was a problem last year and just shows that this great team still has a little way to go. We struggled to do this last year too and I don't want to take anything away from the boys but once we mature in this area of our game then, well the highest prize will be there for the taking.
Also hats of to Nathan Brown, nothing short of brilliant mate. Exciting years are ahead.

One of those games could have gone either way in the conditions. The Bears got up, no injuries as I thought money bags did his knee so we live to fight another day. Will need the rest as it was a slog. If it was dry conditions we would have won. That's football. Get over it.

panga, panga, panga, How on Earth anyone could consider replacing Johnson with Lonie is so far beyond me it is indescribable. The only thing that lonie couldv've brought to last night's game that Johno couldn't would've been a discussion around how Lonie could have finished the game without any mud on his jersey!!
And how about Lethal's comment when coming from the ground after 3/4 time about the free kicks??? Did he suffer a time slip or something and think he was coaching the Pies again :?:

An interesting game I thought.

Most of our players gave something last night. The problem was for some of them it just wasn't at the same time! Our more skilled players - Davis, Didak, Medhurst, Lockyer, Thomas, Heath Shaw were our most consistent on the night.

O'Bree, Fraser, Wood were all solid on the night.

Up back there seem to be a few problems. Goldsack before his injury seemed a bit lost. Harry played well but was often taking on two defenders by himself. Nathan Brown was great and it was great to see the praise he got from Jonathon Brown after the game. Wakelin seems off the pace at the moment - it may be age or perhaps the match up on Bradshaw was wrong. The linking from the kick outs was ordinary last night and resulted in a higher number of turnovers than usual. Same with the linking kick from the half back to the centre. Some of usual co-ordination was off and I think it was against Freo as well.

Pendlebury is right off at the moment. His poise and timing has gone and his seems tentative and is hanging outside the packs way too much. I think its almost time for a short spell in the VFL for him if he doesn't improve next week. Same with Egan. whilst I don't subscribe to the Egan Haters club, more work needs to go into him regarding using his body more. I think he is still protecting his knee a bit and is hesitant when he needs to quickly change direction to chase or tackle. I'd drop him for next week and bring Clarke back - or even Stanley or Iles.

Burns was good but seems to have missed the briefing about mouthing off at umpires. In fact the team did that too much all round - given the new 'zero tolerance' the maggots supposedly have to the natural venting of frustration. Swan was very good as was O'Bree. Rhyce Shaw gave away too many free kicks to Simon Black - and they were mostly of the one type - incorrect tackling. He was better than he often has been still coughed it up once or twice but has improved.

Ben Johnson still can't kick any better than my grandmother and seemed rusty So i'd expect him to improve in his around the ground play. I thought Rocca played well against a good fullback (Will there be a video charge on Merret for his late hit on Rocca?). The suggestion that Reid should come in is problematic I think. Has his kicking improved at all? He was a shocking kick last year and clearly wasn't up to AFL standard last year. He shouldn't be in unless this has markedly improved.

I'm not convinced bringing Travis Cloke back on was the the right decision in the last quarter. He was impaired and all they did was risk further damage to his ankle. Medhurst seemed to be a more effective option around the half forward area. I can't remember Cloke winning a contested ball once in that last quarter. Should he have been left on? Maybe there was no other option on the bench. But his injury definitely effected us in the last.

Still the boys played as best they could on the night and didn't throw in the towel. They were beaten by a very determined Brisbane and their three friends in the coloured uniforms. Brisbane will be a factor this year. I expect them to end up in a botom eight position in the eight this year.

Now... on to next week!

When Collingwood surged in the 3rd quarter and Brisbane were like scarred rabbits in a spot light every time they got the ball. take a look at what Pendlebury is doing and were he is doing it. 12 possies, ho hum. Its not always all about how much leather you touch. 6 tackles. Now that is a stat of someone that is hard at the contest.

Ex-basketballer bringing a sustained full-court press to his opponents.

Lay off Scott his committment can never be and will never be less than 110%.

He is as Black and White as Bucks.
