I'd be disappointed in myself for not getting them first. What's your point?

Turnbull showed he is on a short leash. In the scheme of things his decision was petty.

Now Rudd has "explosively" exposed how small Turnbull is by this wrong decision & it may well come back to bite him. That Corey Bernadi could so brazenly walk Turnbull & Bishop amongst others shows how precarious Turnbull's position is.

On the other hand Turnbull allowed himself to be in this position & was in effect damned if he did & damned if he didn't & may well be using this for leverage in other issues down the track where he may need to stare down the rabid right wing extremist christian nutters in his party.

Just ask Rudd and Gillard how they feel being backstabbed and ousted from the prime ministership in 2010 and 2013.

How is this relevant to the thread though? No one was backstabbed in this instance.

Why was it "petty"? It's usually considered that the UN Secretary General should be someone who can read and write. It's not a diplomatic posting to hide a failed politician. We should only put forward people we think are fit for the post.

Those revelations do look pretty embarrassing for Turnbull.

So, a win-win, then.

Remember Bernadi was making noises about starting up his own conservative 'movement' which had all the ingredients of actually being 'party' without explicitly mentioning it. If the conservative vote was split in this country then the Libs would be out for a generation and an effective opposition is a necessity of a two party system.

I think that shot across the bow gave the Liberal Right considerable pull, but they wouldn't want to overplay their hand because it's all based on an epic bluff.

David, your argument about the far right nutters not forming their own party because then none of its members could ever hope to be PM is nonsensical.

The reality is that even the Liberal Party retains some basic common sense and, as a matter of practical politics, would not for one moment consider allocating a ministerial role, let alone the leadership itself to dangerous weirdo extremists like Bernadi, Christansen, Dutton, Abetz, Morrison, Hockey, Abbott, or Andrews. No Australian political party is as stupid as that. Great conservative leaders like Fraser and Menzies would turn in their graves and government would become a vile circus of idiocy. Completely impossible.

After 30 years working in HR, my back is covered in 2 inches thick of scar tissue.

If I get through a week when no one tries to back stab me, I wonder what I'm doing wrong.

He should fit right in. Washington is full of clueless narcissistic twats who drink their own bathwater. We're the unlucky ones.
