got the 4 points but will need a major improvement to beat west coast which at this stage looks unlikely.

The umpires should get sacked....shannon grants shot at goal should have been 10M closer.

The way he kicked it though, I reckon he'd have still missed.

Agree that major improvement is required but Grany should never have got that 50 metres in the first place. Maybe the short penalty was payback for all the crap free kicks they paid against us and didn't pay for us. :?

How ugly was that, wonder how many people were thinking wooden spoon going into the last quarter. We didn't deserve to win, but those four points might prove invaluable.

Can't read much into a first rounder, but there were plenty of positives mixed with the same old concerns.

Positives

Dale Thomas: Has lost none of his first year spark and showed up quite a few senior players with his hardness at the ball. Someone in recruiting needs to take a bow. Perhaps not the best on field, but certainly the match winner.

Medhurst: Great pick up. Not afraid of a contest and certainly creative. We missed Tarrant today, but pretty happy with the trade.

Clement: What new rules? Champion in any era and under any rules.

Heath: Still the Messiah. Get onto him for the Brownlow before the secret gets out.

Swan: Rusty, but watch out world.

Burns: Sign him up for another three years. Just love watching this bloke play.

Fraser: Smart footballer, does his best work around the ground.

Maxwell: Stood up when it was counted. Deserves his place in the leadership team.

O'Brien: What a talent. Has taken his time, but he will arrive this year.

Pendlebury: Just amazing in traffic. Will make mistakes, but must play all year.

Cloke: Like his brothers, a smart hard working footballer, but with the size and raw talent to back it up.

The four points: Expect to beat teams like Norths, but they were primed for round one and we came in rusty, without 3 of our best and mising a forward structure. Just great to win a first rounder and start in the top half of the ladder.

Desire: Could have turned it up, but we didn't. Standing ovation from me.

Negatives

The umpires: Atrocious, hard to know where to start. How about the missed free to Leon Davis going into the half time break. Cost us 12 points, scoreboard pressure, and our momentum.

Run out of defence: Where is it going to come from? O'Brien, Racer?

The Ruck: Killed in the ruck yet again. Not expecting a lot from Richards, but if we are going to carry him, he must initiate more centre bounce clearances. At least he earned a few kicks around the ground and helped us peg back a goal in the first quarter.

Indirect play: Really lacked cohesion today. Quite a few individuals stood up but we really lacked penetration up the guts. Lets hope its not a sign of things to come.

shannon grant would have kicked the goal if the umpire didnt screw up....but yeah he should not have awarded a 50. He blew his whistle 3 times in 3 seconds....idiot. Actually there were to many very bad decisions that costs goals to both sides.

Well we got a win. You would only want to watch the last quarter because that is the only one that had anything in it.

My main thing out of this game is we were smashed in the ruck. Josh did well in the last 1/4 when the others were a tad tired. But we really need to improve there. I am hoping Bucks, Brodie and Didi will give us that improvement around the bottom at least.

Otherwise, good to get the 4 points. It was looking grim earlier let me tell ya.

Two first round games so far, and that is what we have got.

Last night was ordinary, and so was our game for the first 3 quarters, BUT we showed in the last quarter that we never give up and we showed that we CAN kick a score.

Rocca didn't kick a goal, but how many goals did he influence by giving a contest.

First time in 4 seasons that we have won the first round.

If we play like the last quarter we will be OK...

Mates tee up a 'blind date' for Saturday at 3.00pm. So what do you do ??? You turn up (miss the match) and meet a girl who "hates footy" !!
Never, never, never again! The phones ringing hot around 4.30-4.40, do I answer....NO!!
I feel I have betrayed my birthright. Oh Pies forgive me, I swear, even if its Elle McPherson, I'll never do it again.
Are the Pies better than chicks ?? This is a fundamental question that needs a forum of its own....

And what's even better is that Subiaco night not be the fortress it has been of late. Tazza starts with Freo as he finished with us - being on the losing side!
