He debuted round 17 last year. I think he qualifies for practical purposes as a first year player.

Onya Johnno !! :D

Great to see a fellow Pies fan who's happy we won and highlighting the positives aspects.

Isn't rejoicing when we win part of being a supporter ? Certainly is for me.

I am pleased we got the win, but I thought we had for most of it a pretty off day. But that's a good sign that you can win when it isn't you're day, hopefully against classier opposition we will be back to our best.

Essendon started much better, they were first to the footy and when we got it we had nobody to give it to. Fortunately for us they were very wasteful in front of goal and even Hird missed a easy set shot (it was karma as Presti had first hands on the 'mark' that he claimed). A few more positive signs later on in the first quarter as the bombers began to slow, Licuria started getting his hands on it within 50 but couldn't take maximum advantage.

From then on we started to come into it. Lonie kicked a great goal in the second and I thought as both sides began to go goal for goal, we are going to win this as we have more options up forward than they do. But when Essendon stole a goal just before half time (after almost taking Brodie's head off in the middle) I was heartbroken, these guys always seem to do that just before a break and steal the momentum. But Thomas came to the rescue with a mark (probably wasn't 15, but neither was Hird's in the 3rd quarter) and managed to sneak it in for a goal. Momentum back to us going into half time.

In the third it became the Buckley show, if he wasn't giving of lace out perfect passes to teammates he was slotting them himself. A few misses by the boys allowed the bombers stay in it but we would not give the Bombers the lead again.

When we got a couple of goals up in the last everyone must of thought we were home but after a goal to Hird and a dubious fifty to Lucas the Bombers were within a goal. Anzac day nightmares were coming back and the bombers looked almost capable. But then in a forward foray Didak gathers the ball, cooly baulks and gets a clear sight on goal and then drills it through, what a champion and ice cool too. Fittingly he got the sealer as well.

Johnno getting the anzac day medal was one of our best, Dids likewise, Bucks, Burns, Licuria and Holland were solid and reliable. I thought Thomas did some inspirational things and that mark in the 1st quarter got us going, his goal in the 2nd gave us hope at half time and his one in the last gave us some well earned breathing space. Swan and Obree were fantastic and although cheesy lacks penetration with his possesions he just knows how to find it in close. Presti deserves credit for keeping Lucas quiet while Shaw racked up heaps across half back and hits targets!
Travis Cloke stepped up after halftime with some good leads and he held onto marks he had to make.

Probably Lockyer and Clement were below their best, Maxwell did some good things and Lonie was ok in his 100th. Taz and Rocca did ok but just couldn't find the middle of the big sticks. Obrien does some great things at ground level but he needs to work on his one on one contesting as he gets beaten a little too often in the air.

Richards and Fraser were well beaten by Hille, and I finally see why the bombers rate that guy so much. Too their credit they weren't disgraced but they need to stop tapping the ball to him (easier said than done I suppose). Davis was quiet and needs to start learning to deal with a big game atmosphere as he often goes missing when the stakes are high.

Next week is the power, lets make it 4 in a row. Go Pies!

Hille beat us in the ruck most of the game, but Fraser fought back well and made an impact in the important last quarter. I thought Richards was rather ineffectual.

Travis was very quiet early, but played well in the second half.

Bucks helped turn the game our way in the 3rd quarter.

Leon went missing in another big ocassion game at the MCG - a bit of a worry really.

Burns added some much needed grunt, but looked a bit slow to me. Perhaps it's time to look at someone like Davies to get a game.

For the 4th week in a row I didn't notice Licca much - but often he does things which go unnoticed.

Overall, a gutsy finals like win, despite some ordinary form, particularly from our big blokes. We can only improve from here.

I would say we played at 30% in the first quarter, 40% in the second, maybe 60% in the third and probably about the same in the last.

Good to get the win even though we played like trash.

I can also proudly jump on a bandwagon of sorts, Dale Thomas will be Rising Star this year no worries and looks like he will become the next Cooney/Judd.

GO PIES!
Yep, agree. We almost willed them to win in the first half with unsure ball movement from the stoppages and undisciplined ruckwork (how many weeks before Richards stops getting duped around the opposition goals?). Then Rocca and Tarrant kick 1.7 between them just to make a match of it. We ran over them in the end, but it should never have been that close.

Very happy to win, but very unhappy with the work in the middle until Burnsy moved in there and Hille eventually tired.

We will not beat a top four side until we iron out these problems - next week we play a top midfield/ruck combination and if we don't get it right they'll run all over us.

Anyhow, great to win.

We were not on today yet won by 17 points...thats a great sign. We found other ways to goal, even though Rocca and Taz were a bit off...despite Tarrant probably having atleast 4 golden opportunites. Buckley and Didak stepped up and booted 7 between them...which was the game breaker.

Around the ground, our pressure was unbelievable...we were the better team all day just couldnt get in front due to very very poor kicking. The other thing that kept the dons in it was the fact that when they were clearing the centre they were scoring every time. Hille murdered us.

What was happening was that if it was a point, we were clearing it very very very easily...and we would go down the other end and kick a goal, whereas the Dons had a lot of trouble clearing our attacking 50.

Great win...go pies...doesnt matter how you win them.

Special mention needs to be made of "Craig" Johnson winning the ANZAC medal. When they got his name wrong, for a moment I thought they'd awarded it to an Essendon player, and I was about to jump the fence. Well done Johnno.

Forgot to add our ball movement from HB and along the wings is sensational - Johnno, Clemo, Maxi, Heater, Harry (makes mistakes, but is learning), Lones and to his credit Lockyer is kicking and reading the play now as well as he was before his injury.

If we can just find another class midfielder to step up....

well what can you say about today....to play poorly in the first half and then come out and produce such a good match was sensational.....this kind of performance just takes me back to 2002-3 when we had the grand final teams the way we were playing when we were up fast quik and derect footy and having a such a stable backline now wit shaw and o'brien bak there and then our forward line wot can u say bout that one of the most poteint in the league if not the most it's just such a great time ahead of us and deffiantly a big year this year!!!1

Pietillidie, i disagree that Port have an excellant Ruck/Midfield unit. Brogan is out which means that Lade and a newb will have to take ruck duties. There isnt really anyone in their midfield that i would tag, most of their run, like ours comes from the half back line with the likes of dew, cornes and the burgoyne brothers.

Also with wakelin out of ports side next week they are also a tall defender down.

We also proved today that we dont need the likes of Rocca and Tarrant to fire, both were well held today but we still managed to break the 100 point mark. Oppoistion coaches are going to look at this game and wonder how to stop so many forward threats. Yes you may be able to stop 2 or 3 of Taz, Pebs, Bucks, Dids, C3, Fraser ect. But You cant stop all of them.

Considering we were crucified by the umpires, so many shite decisions today im content with the result. We are in 3rd spot on the ladder and now are a better than even chance of going 5-1 after 6. Then the real tests come as we face off with West Coast @subi, Geelong @ the G, and the Dogs @ the G. If we can be 6-3 or 7-2 after 9 then we are a better than even chance of making the finals this year.

Oh, and DT is the 2006 Rising Star, mark it in now.
