I rewound the clock back to last year on the round two match against the crows to refresh the memory.
We were still competitive but we were without Bucks Dids Fraz and Taz as we know now was not 100%.The game was down to the wire with McClowd kicking the goal of the year to clich the game. It was a well fought out affair even though there were a lot of unforced errors from both sides the most clamerous one was that of Cole who could'nt get the handle on a perfect handball dropping the pill for an easy goal to Adelade. It was a real battle of the midfield, our boys were extended as we won little from the ruck and we were on the defencive, at least we forcie them to deliver under pressure. Wakes Clemo were solid as usual. When we did deliver the ball up foward we looked really dangerous. Replacing Tex with Fraz is going to make a big difference to our line up now. Dids for the then Williams (no need to comment). Carra found space, with Taz and Rocca extending the Crows defence, Carra with his usal "intelligent assists" was great to watch. Now we have the great man back! who can deliver 60 metre passes from the centre ( what we lacked last year)! Adelaide are going to have their hands full and I can't wait for the game to begin!

On recent form, Adelaide however i dont think they have an outstanding team and are overated IMO...

For us to win
-Rocca to kick 4-5
-tarrant to kick 4-5
-break even in the midfield against ruccuito, goodwin and co.
-fraser to push foward at every opportunity against clarke
-make mcleod accountable for an opponent don't let him run from half back.
-who ever plays on rutten should push him up to centre half foward lets see how he plays away from the goal sqaure.

The respective forward and defensive lines match up pretty well, our forwards would probably have an edge. Contain their midfield for better than 50% of the game and the Pies will record a narrow victory. Leave their mids unchecked and the Crows will win by 20+ points.
Beware the Crows fringe players! They will want to establish themselves early in the season or they are likely play a lot of footy in the SANFL.
Can't wait, team selection will be very very interesting!

Have I missed something here. Having finished 15th last year, I'd have thought finishing between 5th and 8th would be a fantastic result - hardly what i'd call "a mediocre season". If we manage 5th, then anything can happen from there. However, every team is starting off the season at 16th, so we've got a long way to go, but i see no reason why we shouldn't all be optimistic of a really good year. Bring it on!Hugor wrote:We will do the usual Collingwood thing....come out all hyped and kick their arses like we will do for the next 3 - 4 games. Everybody (especially us) will declare them favourites for the flag and then we will have a mediocre season at best. Mark my words. We will just make the 8 and finish between 5 and 8. I used to be an optimist but my mortgage has awakened me.

There are some pessimists out there!
If we only break even with their midfield, we win...a lot of Adelaides goals come from their midfield. They've got a couple of key players out and a no-name forward line that our backmen will dominate. Our forward line, at least on paper, could be the most damaging in the comp...if things click, we will completely demolish them (and remember they are travelling...that's another advantage for us).
I'm expecting a big win with good performances from Leon, Thomas, Didak and Bucks, amongst others.

There's nothing wrong with optimism, but lets not get carried away before a shot is even fired in anger. The higher the expectations now, the deeper the anger and resentment later in the year if those expectations aren't fullfilled.
We have nearly a full list to pick from and have been showing reasonable form in the preseason matches.
The Crows were the surprise packet last year, finishing on top of the ladder. They are a good team.
I personally am cautious about my expectations. I'll wait and see how we go this week with great interest, hoping to see signs that the year is on the right track rather than expecting us to dominate from the start.
I want to see the boys playing the right brand of football. I want to see them putting their bodies on the line and playing hard attacking football. i want to see them moving the ball quickly thru the corridoor to leading forwards, not pissing around the flanks for ever. I want to see them being able to close down the opposition midfield when necessary and let our own loose at will. If I see these things, we should win but even if we don't we are on track. If these things are missing, we're in shit.

I read in the paper today, that riccutio will playing foward, due to what i gathered was a alck of fitness,
and mgregor will be moved down back,
the crows also recognised that collingwood will up and firing and will perhaps be more fitter.
i think with ricutio up foward that will ease the pressure on our midfield, and im confident our defence will be bale to handle him nicely,
our foward line looks good, w ehave had a few of our fowards hit form in the rpeseason, with tarrant, rocca and cam cloake all kicking bags of goals.
neon leon and dids, could provide some magic,
Fraser will be roaring to go.
and we can pretty breathe a lot easier with the consistency of buckley and clement,
i think we have a pretty competitive side,
and with a few of adelaides lack of a full list to choose from,
we have a great chance to start the season off with a memorable win.
Go Pies
Cheers

Looking forward to this one, should be a ripper.
We are fresh, we are fit, we are ready to go.
Of course, the Crows could blast us out of the water, like they did to three side's in the NAB Cup, but I'd like to think we are better and stronger than that.
A win here would really kick start our season. Our forward line will have a tough battle against their monstorous defence - Rutten, Bock, Bassett and Torney are four of the best (and more underrated) in the caper. Tarrant, Rocca, Fraser, T.Cloke, Buckley, Caracella, Thomas and possibly Didak will be used to stretch their back half.
The midfield is where they may have edge, although we won't go down without a fight.
Our backline should hold their forward line in check - Presti, Wakes, Clemo, O'Brien (?), J.Cloke, Maxy, Jonno etal should have the edge over the workmanlike McGregor and Perrie, as well as the brilliance of Trent Hentschel.
We have the motivation for a win (a 100+ point drubbing last time we met, round 21 2005, AAMI Stadium). Kill 'em, Collingwood!
