Hawthorn is now our yardstick. There was no shame in yesterday's effort. We now know exactly where our list is at. Our 2008 expectations (and mine) are two years ahead of reality. We wanted to see if in 2008 the loss of Bucks, Lica and Clemo would cause us to go temporarily backwards. Now the Hawks have given us a clear answer. We have gone backwards. The best young guys lack the experience and hardened bodies we need. Play Wellingham, Cox, Reid and Egan to add to the other youngsters who are getting a game.
We have unearthed a future champion in Brown but Burnsy as captain showed the leadership vacuum. I love Burnsy but we really needed someone mid to late 20's to be ready to step in and we don't have the right one now. Pendles and Heater in a year or two though.

Nice post mate. One would've thought a combination of Burnsy/Josh would've filled the leadership vacuum, but clearly it hasn't. I'd give it the next three games against quality opposition before getting stuck into the list, but one fears as you say the Hawthorn game has already given us enough information.perthmagpie wrote:Hawthorn is now our yardstick. Mark it down now - Cats and Hawks GF - and the Hawks to win by 8+ goals and at least 3 players reported for striking (Guerra, Dew and Roughead for sure).
Wallsy hit it on the head in the commentary - Desperados - every single one of them.
Hawks have instilled committment to the team into every single one of their 22 players that line up each week.
They play hard, tough, fast and are all very well drilled and skilled.
Pies are light years behind them in coaching techniques and this was clearly evident last Saturday.
They are playing AFL like an NBA game now and everything is a fast break and there are no really set positions on the ground.

We dont want it bad enough, we believe our own bath water. You would think that losing by 5 points in the PF last year would have given us some motivation to want to achieve greater things, but unfortunately it has given ourselves a false value of ourselves. As much as I hate to say it Our lads should take a look at Essendon's 2000 team on video for motivation. Because at the moment we are lacking it.

Pardon my ignorance , but as far as salary caps for teams go ... doesn't Collingwood have one of the higher ones ? excluding some of the interstate teams that are given special treatment.
So , taking this into consideration ...... we are paying good money , but don't seem to be getting value for money.

too many of the same ilk and of those not enuff class
burns and obree have no run left in them . add in swan and pendlebury and it looks very pedestrian . none of these breaks lines . swan is the closest to doing that . throw in lockyer who does not run away from players either . that is a lot of 1sh paced players . a couple too many in my opinion
blokes with pace - shaw and johnson . hmmmm . what do they have in common . very ordinary kicking skills . some people might say " oh look , they didnt miss a target all match " but maybe the question is what kind of targets did they hit and are capable of hitting . stationary target 15 - 20 metres away on their own . plus they r 1 sided which restricts options as to where they can run , and our players upfield can run
all up a very ordinary midfield
maxy , harry and goldsack . none of them classy and polished users of the ball . what hurts here was that 1 of those positions would have been clement who was just that , classy and polished user of the ball .
try cox
wakelin . 1 year too many?
we need 3 quick dual sided midfielders and 1 key back at the moment (plus a second tall target in the forward line - obviously rocca when fit or if not fraser as i believe that with todys footy he is not that much use around the grounds as the mobile ruckman who supposedly cant be matched up on )
i would try stanley for obree and give him some time .
wellingham for r . shaw or johnston . dont care which
cox for maxwell , obrien or goldsack and see what his skills are like (or even wakelin and someone has to play second tall down back , also anthony is in the mix for this)
i would give mcaffer a run to see where he is at . i believe he is a solid bodied player who is nicely skilled (question mark on where to play him is the problem ) but strong and nicely skilled sounds a bit ike a lot of hawks who killed us n the weekend
this may sound like i think we are hopeless and a lost cause etc but that is far from it . i believe we have lots of good players in our squad and i also beleieve that not every player in your team can be a champion . i just think we need about a 3 to four player turnover to become a serious threat

Much very good analysis here and I especially like Tannin's, Mugwump's and Rand's thoughts.
Hawthorn totally dominated us. They looked classy, skilled and very strong. Collingwood looked like the skinny guy on the beach to Hawthorn's sand kicking bully.
Goldie looks a bit lost and Harry is awful.
Rhyce is turning it over too often (despite getting raves and lots of votes in here).
O'Bree is not our problem; he has never been a sprinter or a line breaker.
He gets contested ball in the centre.
Thomas is out of form; needs to be dropped.
Ditto Clarke. His is more an attitude problem from what I am hearing.
Ok, now to the controversial ones.
Too many of our clever, talented players are very over-rated and go missing when the pressure is on.
Honestly, Davis and Didak get votes in here for running around and kicking a clever goal occassionally. I'm not suggesting they have no talent, but I am saying they don't use it enough. When the side is playing well they look silky and unstoppable. When we really need a lift, too often they are nowhere.
And so to Josh Fraser. Perhaps the biggest disappointment for me over the last 5 years. No intensity, rarely stamps himself on the game, never dominates. That Josh was touted as leadership material made me squirm.
Nothing we can do about it of course, he is our number one ruckman and there's no one else.
Where to?
Against North I though we were not far off good form; there were patches of nice footy. Against the Bombers......hard to say; they were so bad it was impossible to tell.
Thomas, Clarke, Harry, Goldie and Cloke will get better and this will make an enormous difference through the midfield and into the forward line.
The wheels are wobbling but all is not lost. Doubt if we are top 4 material, but with a little luck, the eight is still a reasonable goal.

After the epic draw comes the decisive knockout!

Mate, how can you possibly say that about Didak? He has been our best player this year, if not, second best after Heath. He is our leading clearance player and 6th in the league (behind the likes of Mitchell, Kerr and Judd), he leads the league in kicks. Add to that his sheer quality and creativity... and you have our best player.
FWIW: He was in our best 2 players against Brisbane, Carlton and Kangaroos (our other 3 losses). So he is no front-runner who is only up and about when we're winning. Pull your head in.

Interesting response ktszyu1 but I can't pull my head in on this one.
Yes, I've seen the raves Didak gets here and yes I have seen his stats.
He was good against Brisbane.
He's talented and at times breathtaking; no doubt.
Best player this year? Not in my opinion; that accolade is Heater's or perhaps Medhurst's.
Maybe a have a blind spot when it comes to Didak; good judges love the guy but I think he is over rated.
