Aussies V Namibia Article - Record Breaking Win

Australia scores record win over Namibia http://news.ninemsn.com.au/Sport/story_44448.asp

Re-write the record books.

Australia beat Namibia by an unprecedented 256 runs in a horribly lopsided World Cup match at North West Stadium as a host of records - both good and bad - tumbled at a furious rate:

* Australia matched the West Indies' benchmark for consecutive one-day wins.

* The winning margin was the largest runs difference in limited overs history.

* McGrath's 7-15 was the best return in a World Cup, the second best in a one-day game and he passed Shane Warne as Australia's leading World Cup wicket-taker.

* Adam Gilchrist's six catches were the most by a wicketkeeper in a World Cup contest, and matched the all-time standard he already shared with Ridley Jacobs and Alec Stewart.

* Darren Lehmann took the most runs (28) from a World Cup over.

* Rudi van Vuuren finished with the most expensive wicketless figures in a one-dayer (0-92 from 10 overs).

Namibia, with a top score of 15 sundries, made 45 from 14 overs in reply to Australia's 6-301.

"I'm very happy - it was good to get a few wickets," said McGrath.

"The ball has been coming out well the whole series, hopefully it will keep going through the whole World Cup."

Lehmann belted 28 runs from van Vuuren's final over then McGrath did the rest to totally and utterly humiliate a Namibian side hoping to emerge from the game with their pride intact.

A World Cup cricketer and rugby player, and a doctor in Namibia able to deliver AIDS-free babies from AIDS-infected mothers, Van Vuuren is widely revered and respected and proud, but his 0-92 from ten overs left him with head bowed.

Lehmann's 28 - four fours and two sixes - were the most runs ever taken from a World Cup over, beating the 26 that came from the flashing blade of West Indian Brian Lara against Canada earlier this week.

The all-time limited overs record is 30, achieved twice by Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya.

Another Kiwi, Martin Snedden, broke both records for the most expensive one-day and World Cup figures on the same horrible day against England at The Oval in 1983, when he took 2-105.

Nobody has ever been as expensive as van Vuuren without taking a wicket.

Australia's opener Matthew Hayden, pulling and cutting with complete authority, made 88 from 73 balls before Andrew Symonds strode out and thumped 59 off 63 and Lehmann took 50 from 31 in Australia's 11th straight one-day win - matching the feat of the mighty West Indies in 1984-85.

"If we get it, it would be testament to the way this team's performed, a real testament to the character that we've got given those massive issues that have surrounded the team recently," said Gilchrist in reference to the Shane Warne drug scandal, Zimbabwe security issue and his own racial vilification case against Pakistan's Rashid Latif.

Some WC matches we're the exclusive preserve of Foxtel. This may have been one of them. A full list was published pre-tournament, but I truly forget if this was an exclusive game.
