The only story I found in World Cup figures is good players all seem to do better than their overall career records.

Alan Lamb, Martin Crowe, Aravinda deSilva, Mike Gatting, David Gower, Kapil Dev, Viv Richards, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Salim Malik and Mark Waugh all have better strike rates than Steve. Once again, bear in mind they all (except Dev) batted higher in the order than Steve.

Wasim Raja, David Boon, Richards, Mark Waugh, Glen Turner, Tendulkar and deSilva all have more centuries than Steve's 1 in 33 matches.

Gower, Saeed Anwar, Tendulkar, Lamb, Dravid, Raja, Crowe, Richards, Mark Waugh, Boon, Zaheer Abbas, and Turner all have higher averages than Steve.

What sort of selection criteria would it be to select someone because he did well in the last WC? That was 3 years ago!

We could argue stats ad nauseum but it's Steve's recent form (last 15-20 innings) that has him out of the one-day team and a batting average in the low thirties (over last 12 months) that is causing warranted speculation about his place in the Test team.

You're a hard man to please, m8. You clearly said: "Please show me Steve Waughs record in the World Cup. I think that will tell a different story"

As for the players you mentioned, only Maher and Lehmann can be compared as the others are all-rounders and didn't take a spot from Steve.

Those two batsmen both have much better recent form.

How is Symonds an all rounder ?? He very rarely bowls......probably as often as Steve Waugh Image He isnt out in the middle long enough to call him a batsman.

Mahers record isnt exactly brilliant

Yeah, I'm not calling him an all-rounder either. But he certainly wasn't picked as a batsman which is the only spot Steve's diehard supporters (like you.lol) could have found for him.

As for that list you posted, any list that rated Arjuna Ranatunga ahead of Mark Waugh, Dravd, Ponting, Azharuddin and Lara has got to be suspect.

As this topic is about Steve Waugh, was there any particular point in posting that even sillier bowlers list - that rates Glen McGrath at 9 (!) and Murali at 15 (!!!) and rates Klusener, Prasad, Larsen and Allott ahead of Shaun Pollock (lol) - if it doesn't include Steve?

OK, JLC, but you're using it as a reason to include Tugga in the present WC squad.

Should the Windies pick Curtley Ambrose? He USED to be pretty good too. And let's bring back Deano! He WAS a gun!
