Quarter by quarter:

Q1: We got owned in the first.
3: Dale Thomas: skill, run, courage, hardness at the ball. Nothing flash, just class and a big effort. Oh, and a great opportunist goal.
2: Cameron Wood: beaten in the ruck by a stronger opponent but didn't drop his head and kept contesting. Around the ground though, Woody ran hard, took an excellent grab, and put himself in the right places for some excellent spoils
1: Paul Medhurst: missed two he should have kicked, but was nevertheless our only effective forward.

Q2: Another poor quarter, hard to find any stand-out players, but:
3: Harry. Didn't get a lot of it, but all class when it went near him. Unlike all the other defenders, managed to get through the quarter without a clanger.
2: Didak. Not a lot of possessions, but his lightning fast hands and great delivery by foot left him head and shoulders above te other midfielders.
1: Cloke. Thrust unexpectedly into the ruck, he made a decent job of it and was more an useful in general play across half-back. I've said it before here, and I'll say it again. Cloke will be an All-Australian once we finally start playing him in his natural position: centre-half back.

Q3: A vastly better quarter, still hard to pick best players because everyone did his bit.
3: Pendlebury: just kept on getting ball and disposing of it well
2: Maxwell: the general who organised the zone that cut off Brown's air supply, and led from the front with courage, skill, and a lot of hard running to reach the fall of the ball and help out his mates.
1: Brown: smashed early by a bigger, faster, stronger opponent, he never gave up and gave more and more of a contest as the game wore on

Q4:
3: Pendlebury: reminds me of Steve Waugh - just accumulates so quietly and steadily that you don't realise how bloody good he really is.
2: Thomas: nailed the man kicking out again and set the tone for another Collingwood take-no-prisoners quarter.
1: Beams. He is all class, and his ability to pop up unexpected and find the goals is becoming very important.

Overall:
3: Pendlebury. 'nuff said.
2: Thomas. Not a lot of possessions, but three excellent goals and hard work off the ball. His constant pressuring of the kick out was inspirational.
1: Wood. Held his own in the ruck contests, made himself more than useful around the ground, and showed excellent disposal skills with both hand and foot.
Stiff: Leigh Brown for a brave effort, Nick Maxwell for a great captain's game, Harry for being Harry, Swan who worked hard all day to good effect, Leon, Beams, Cloke, Heater.
