he gets more ball and tackles then good ol presti.Zakal wrote:OEP wrote:Cameron Wood and Nathan Brown sensational first games for the Pies. Wood looks like he could take the number one ruck spot from Fraser before the mid-season break.
Only down side was the injury to Rusling, hopefully he's back on the field in the near future. Though in the mean time now we get to see most likely Reid play a few games.
Very, very exiting times for the Pies ahead.
i agree. THe Injury to Rusling is really discouraging....but Brown and Wood?
Holy crap...it was Brown's first game and he made Pavlich his bitch. It was like watching Presti in full flight. He's big, he's strong, he's fast....and knows how to blanket an opponent. Presti Mark 2?
And Wood. Right from teh first tap it was clear that he is the first guy since Monky to truly look like a ruckman. Better than Richards and Bryan combined.

listening to 3AW and good to hear robert walls rates C.Wood highly because he follows up his ruck work.
like int eh centre bounce does the ruckwork and if the ball is on the ground he wants that pill and will go after it.
how good was it at the game wen it was in the centre and he booted it off the ground inside 50

Cam, I'll feel sorry for him only if and when we get the silverware safely delivered to the Lexus centre, and he's not a part of it.Cam wrote:I actually feel sorry for Tazza. He will regret being a dumbass whilst he was young, and had the world at his feet, for a long time.

Here here!!!DaVe86 wrote:I thought O'Bree was close to our best on ground. He wont even poll in the votes, because others stood out slightly more such as Rocca kicking 6 or Swan getting 27 disposals. But O'Bree was in everything...and his kicking was a highlight.
That is the best i have seen O'Bree skill wise. Off his left foot he is actually deadly. He is equally competant on both feet, making him a handful for defenders because he can switch to any side he pleases.
Whats more, he knows his limitations. At one stage he was running inside 50 to an open goal, but instead of blazing, he popped up a 15 metre dink kick to a team-mate who was in better position ( I think it was Swanny)
A true collingwood champion through and through who deserves more credit.
Time to smell the cheese people.
Setup several direct goal opportunities out of practically nothing.
A great day at the office that the Cheese baggers will turn a blind eye to once again.
I loved the left footer after the Marty intercept that landed right above Dale's head 35 out for Dale's first. Beautiful placement.

Things I noticed
Things I noticed sitting bottom deck of Ponny:
1. Egan had his best game so far. Still long way to go though. Needs to improve kicking and discipline. Is taking time to adjust to the speed of the game. Play him till at least round 6.
2. Fraser looked vague. He had his hands on hips a lot even after 5 mins. Maybe those pre-game spews he does lasted all day. Not aggressive enough for a captain.
3. Pendles looks underdone. Will come good round 3.
4. Marty Clarke needs a couple more weeks to pick up the tempo again.
5. Didak is still the best pass in our team.
6. Swan can't play golf with a hook like that.
7. Daisy needs to learn to play 4 quarters not 2.
8. Nathan Brown is a natural footballer
9. Sean Rusling is damn damn unlucky
10. Goldy is way underdone.
11. Rhys is fitter and seems to be concentrating on his disposal more
12. Wood can ruck-thank God
13. Johno will have to earn his spot this year
14. We were a helluva lot better than round 1 last year

The ability of our club to continually get debutants up to scratch is fantastic.
It comes down to the confidence Mick is able to give these guys. Fair dinkum, throwing Brown on Pavlich first up almost looks kamikaze but Mick continually pulls it off. Big ups to Mick and all the development guys!

Debutants since 2007 and performance rating:
Goldsack (excellent - appears to have glorius career ahead of him)
Clarke (excellent - the find of century - the game against geelong in the prelim showed what potential he has)
Reid (excellent - i am hyped about this kid as long as he can get his kicking right. Predict will be a star)
Wood (excellent first up - a ruck who can run and follow. Needs now to back it up)
Brown (excellent first up - watching the replay his game was a lot better than I initially thought. Could be anything.)
Illes (has skills but probably will be traded)
Stanley (has skills a genuine possibility - starved of opportunity)
Cox (has skills a genuine possiblity - needs to show more)
Cook (has skills - will have to improve a lot and show much more when given an opportunity)
Toovey (great debut has faltered since)
Dick (sky is the limit but could cut down by injury and follow the path of somebody like chipper adkins)
Looking like a 50/50 success ratio at this stage. However, anything better than 50/50 is a sub-lime result. Illes, Stanley and Cox probably would be walk up starts in most other teams - the strength of our team sets the bar higher and it will be harder in the future to bring in such a succesful group of rookies - just because they are competing in a more talented team. Infact rookies will find it far harder just to get a go - thats why I think Cook will have to show a lot of improvement to get another go.
In the absence of injuries spots in the collingwood team are going to be hard to come by.

Hear hear. Does not have a defensive side to his game and that is something he does need to work at.DaVe86 wrote:AnthonyC wrote:Always great to start with a win. Having said that though, I don't like to talk in negatives but there were some undisciplined play, selfish play at times. I felt we should have won that game by a far bigger margin (umps notwithstanding, that free against Didak was a disgrace). Fantastic to see Rocca kick truly. With regard to Egan, I have to disagree with some of the views here. I hope he proves me wrong, but I'll be calling him Western Star from now on. We've got some young kids who go in hard regardless of what's coming the other way. He will be found out against some sides with tough bodies. He's got some skills, but he needs to show some fearlessness.
where were you last week when i was getting caned for sharing the same views in regards to Egan lol.
That said, i thought Egan was ok first game back from knee surgery. His kicking was terrible in the first half, but it was quite good in the 2nd. And thats important because it shows he settled down.
His defensive skills are an issue...but his work rate was good. 21 disposals is a good return.
That said, i think once Scott Burns and Johnson come back, he may have a fight on his hand for a spot. Rhyce SHaw played a great game i thought and may fight with him for a position and offers heaps of run. Egan on the other hand sort of floats and offers a good target on the wings. Both important i suppose.
Just hoping Egan can string a few games together because it is too early to judge after 1 game back from injury. The kid needs 4 or 5 before we can make a really solid assessment.
Overall, i was pleased with Egan, but i still have a lot of doubts which should be answered within the next month.
A great team effort led from the front by our barometer, Pebbles. When he's firing we never lose.
Wood is the first true ruckman we've had since Monkhorst. Still only 20yrs, the club will no doubt nurse him somewhat, but we certainly look more impressive with him at the centre bounces than with Josh. Fraser could be a champion ruck rover, but tap ruckman he will never be.
Brown certainly looks the goods, and is a credit to our recruiters once again.
I think goldy and Pendles will improve over the next couple of weeks as they have missed some of the practice games.
Assuming Reid comes in for Rusling, the big question becomes who will make way for Burns? Whoever it is will be very stiff. If I had to pick a player to make way, based purely on form, it would be Clarke, but he'll no doubt bounce back very quickly.
Look out Brisbane here we come.
