Williamstown's season is over.

Post by Dale61 »

Murray Kangaroos
6.3.39 ~ 9.6.60 ~ 14.12.96 ~ 18.18.126

Williamstown
8.3.51 ~ 9.5.59 ~ 10.8.68 ~ 14.14.98

Goals:
Cummings 3, Kinnear 2, Swan 2, Pearce 2, Podsiadly 2, Adkins, Steinfort, Dimattina.

Best:
Fletcher, Lloyd, Kinnear, Steinfort, Crow.

The Roos were greatly favored by umpire Andrew Malcolm, who is an out-and-out cheat. On many occasions, blatant frees against Williamstown players went unnoticed, but he regularly payed easy kicks to Roos players, particurly in front of goal, even when they tripped over their own feet. How he could pay a push in the back, by a Williamstown player, when the Willaimstown player was in front is beyond me.

However, even with the biased umpiring, Williamstown were outplayed by a far more committed Roos after quarter time. Turnovers and kicking blind have been Williamstown's downfall all year, and again proved costly yesterday.

Cummings was on fire early, with three first quarter goals, but went off during the third quarter with a reoccurence of a hamstring injury which could end his season.

Fletcher was again dominant in the centre, and with Justin Crow winning the centre ruck contests, Fletch notched up plenty of possessions in the first quarter. Adkins and Pearce were also running amok, and gave the forward plenty of supply. Dane Swan also blitzed in the first, kicking two goals.

Both defences tightened up in the second, but Williamstown had trouble manning up, allowing the Roos unmarked players to punish Williamstown and take a one-point lead into the main break.

Williamstown came out firing in the third quarter, but continued to make mistakes, and the Roos kicked away to a good lead. Three shocking umpiring decisions within 20 metres of the Roos goals ensured they led at three quarter time.

The last quarter was an even affair, with both teams kicking 4.6, and the game was as good as over at the 15-minute mark.

From the Herald-Sun:

The Murray Kangaroos continued a weekend of upsets yesterday, booting Wiliamstown out of the finals with a 28-point win.

David Tregenza snared eight goals at full-forward and Adam Lange five from centre half-forward, with the Kangaroos pulling away after leading by one point at halftime.

Not even a heroic performance by Adrian Fletcher could keep the Seagulls in the contest; the 31-year-old had 27 first-half touches, and 42 in all, in what could be his last VFL match.

Fletcher is a chance to play on if he continues in his coaching role with Collingwood, but club officials last night indicated he might be leaning towards retirement.

Scott Cummings broke down again with a hamstring strain after kicking three first-quarter goals.

Williamstown kept in touch early, but the loss of Troy West with a calf strain saw his opponent Tregenza step up a gear.

Let's hope Collingwood's finals hopes are stronger.

WKB, I got a close, front up shot of him (Ump #4) which I will post when I get the photos back. Might make an excellent dartboard.....

Then again, I might print one and use it to wipe my a**e with it the next time I take a dump.

I wonder how many votes he gave himself!

Here are a couple of pics of the umpire that cost Williamstown any chance of defeating the Murray Kangaroos.

His name is Andrew Malcolm.
