Finals, if they want it

Post by Dale61 »

From the Williamstown Advertiser.

Incredibly, Williamstown's destiny remains in it's own hands as the race to VFL finals intensifies.

The Seagulls are breathing a huge sigh of relief in the wake of their bitterly disappointing loss to Carlton at Optus Oval last Sunday.

They remain in seventh position on the ladder courtesy of Sandringham and Springvale self-destructing against Coburg and Frankston respectively in an absorbing 17th round.

But Williamstown will need to play well to book a ticket to the finals.

They host reigning premiers Box Hill on Saturday at Point Gellibrand Oval in the ABC-TV match of the day.

The Seagulls then play Essendon and Springvale both away in the remaining home and away rounds.

Captain Troy West and his team-mates will make it, if they are good enough.

Coach Brad Gotch will be working hard to devise strategies to help his side get the scoreboard humming.

A lack of panache on the forward line proved costly against the Blues.

"We had plenty of the ball, but we're just not kicking enough goals," general manager Brendan Curry said.

"It's pretty frustrating. The workrate is there - everyone is having a crack. (But) we're just letting ourselves down with some of our disposal (into the forward line)."

He lamented the hip injury suffered by full-forward Scott Cummings in the second quarter.

It promises to be an action-packed day - to be sponsored by Harper Project Management - at Point Gellibrand on Saturday.

A sell-out crowd of 170 will listen to footy loud-mouth Malcolm Brown at the pre-match president's lunch. Glamourous pin-up girl Sarah Jane will take part in a special Bluey Day head shave with local police to raise money for children living with cancer.
