In freezing, arctic-like conditions, Williamstown continued to play the flanks in losing to a more determined Tasmania today.
Kicking with a 10-goal breeze, inaccuracy cost Williamstown what could have been a match winning lead, but 2.9 proved to be costly. Tasmania made the most of their chances by kicking 1.1. Poor disposal was again the cause of many turnovers.
The second quarter proved no better. Again inaccuracy could have cost Tasmania, but 6.9 to 0.3 saw them turn a 14 deficit into a 28 point half time lead. The wind was blowing so hard that often, when Williamstown kicked into attack, the ball would be blown backwards 10 metres, catching everyone out. Long kicking by Tasmania showed the Williamstown players what could be achieved by playing direct footy. No player had really stood out at this stage, but Steinfort was putting in a good effort, as was Rhyce Shaw upon his return. Full back Donny DeAngelis was keeping Jason Heatley relatively quiet.
Coach Brad Gotch moved the magnets around during the half time break, and the move of Jarrod Molloy on to the field was paying dividends. Molly would continuously break open the packs giving the Williamstown runners room to move, and his run from the half back line was causing Tasmania many problems. A 5.8 to nil scoreline gave Williamstown a 10 point three quarter time lead, and with the breeze not dying down, Tasmania were in the box seat. Steinfort continued with his work rate, and Adkins and Fletcher were starting to get drive through the centre. The forwards, however, were wasting many opportunities with easy chest marks going to ground and set shots sailing out on the full. The wind could partly be blamed for this, but not for kicking OOF inside 30 metres.
The defence stood their ground early in the last with Molloy again proving a handful, but 4 goals in as many minutes to Tasmania killed off any hopes Williamstown had of victory. 6.6 to 1.1 saw Tasmania run out comfortable 25 point winners.
My best were Steinfort, who never gave up all day, Shaw, who provided run out of the back line, DeAngelis, who kept Heatley under check for most of the day, and Molloy, who without his last half input Williamstown could have lost by a lot more, and A.J. Hill was good in defence and a backed up DeAngelis,
Kinnear and Dimattina were extremely disappointing, with BK seemingly not even trying, and Dima giving away needless free kicks, and a 50 that should have proved costly.
Of the others, Lonie tried hard but seems to have lost that spark, Adkins was good at times, but went missing for far too long, Davidson just couldn't handle the conditions, and Podsiadly was on and off the field most of the day.
