These sorts of things are what is imprtant in practice matches, not the result

Perspective is a valuable instrument. This is a practice match 3 weeks shy of the season proper. The injuries that we are currently carrying and aging stars we want available for September action and a list of developing youngster all add up to the prudent path the coaching panel are pursuing. It is a loss but one we can well afford at this stage. Let Rus be our reminder that a season can be derailed ever so quickly.

Rapt to hear that chopper Reid did so well. He really impressed me in the game against the saints, and would be a perfect replacement for Rusling if we need another marking option. My only concern is that he's a bit on the thin side, and I'd hate to see him get smashed around too much. Still, sometimes players are best thrown in at the deep end - they either sink or swim. It could be the making of him.

Yes I enjoy losing Lazza...

I'd rather not find my self in a spiral of depression after a pointless practise match loss. Don't get me wrong I hate losing, it ruins my week, but not at this stage of the year.

And no worries glad I was right on the money with which way you tick, I did think I was pretty close.

Intersting that Ried got BOG for Pies on one report and not mentioned on the "Best" list on the CFC site.

For those that were there, where did his game really sit. Really keen to see him play now. Who does he play like and likely role for 2007 in the seniors?

Perspective in these games is vital. time to worry when when we lose when playing a full strength side. not with a bunch of kids, who the majority won't get a game this year! (i.e. Clarke, Toovey, Wellingham, etc).

Just that whether it is a ten a side giggle or a trial match or the real thing, I HATE Collingwood losing... The shit feeling after a Collingwood loss is NOT what I enjoy, unlike some others here on the board.
Hey don't get me wrong here I believe every game played by the black and white should be won, I hate losing more than any man known, seriously i'll let you spend 5 minutes with my family and you'll soon know what i'm like after a loss.

Hell I happened to be in Sydney when we played them in the practice match a few weeks ago and you should have seen me after that match.

The thing with these matches I can take a couple of hours of being pissed off at losing and then put them into perspective (season proper it takes me till the next victory to actually be able to speak or do anything properly after a loss as i'm usually fuming). Nothing wrong with being angry at losing as losing can become a habit as much as winning. But just have to put them in persepective. Ried another good hit out, Rocca first game back and got some goals, more kids got time in the middle etc.

I know where you guys are all coming from when you hate loosing, but the important word is practice........
Great to read about the youngsters doing some good things and Ant getting a run. It's the complete home and away season where we have to win at least 14 games that counts.

1. Didak plays half a game and looks brilliant, Reid plays well again, pendlebury stars but we lose by 10 goals
2. Nothing of note happens in the game and we have a workman-like 3 goal win

I'd take option 1 by an absolute mile.
I'll take the workman-like win. It's team game.[/quote]

Yeah the AAP dude was in love with Reid and was having a few technical problems.
He definately wasn't in the best players, but showed a lot of potential and Mick was happy.

If anyone here thinks you can read anything into preseason form I'm prepared to offer you even money on any one of the following teams finishing the season proper ahead of Collingwood.

Brisbane 51.00
Kangaroos 101.00
Carlton 126.00

Surprisingly Collingwood is paying $23 while the only team it has managed to beat in the preseason, St Kilda, is paying $8.

Spot on!
If my memory serves me correct we lost every practice match in 90 before turning up in Rd 1 to defeat reigning premier and perennial bogey team of the 80's Hawthorn. The rest of course is history... :)
Obviously it's a different set of cicumstances this year and we're probably a fair way from achieving the same feats but I'm not not about to write the season off just the same

Im with you LR. I dont like losing and would prefer option 1 and 2 if i could...but if it doesnt work out that way, so be it.

There is absolutely no point (except to settle a team) in playing a full strength side in a practice match...though maybe the one just prior to round 1 to get the lineups settled.

The whole idea is to learn stuff about the younger players, and test other players in different positions to know what is actually in your arsenal for that moment in a Premiership Match when you've just gone 4 goals down in the 3rd qtr and need to make a change fast to save the game.

To me the positives from this game are:

Rocca kicking 3 (not that i rate the swans as THE best defensive team, cos thats us, but they are more than competant) and from the sounds of it it was 3 goals he got despite suffering poor delivery from a swans-choked midfield.

Ben Reid putting in a quality show in one of his first games.

Bryan getting more settled into our lineup.

Pendles getting tagged. I know this seems like a bit of an odd 'positive' but i think its VERY important that a quality player learn to play with a tag early in his career while he is still moulding his playing style.

That's right Frankiboy, we won 1990 with a crap pre-season.... BUT..... the 1990 side were fierce, with loads of heart and courage and not one of them heard foot steps. I think it's great that some of the young fella's are getting a feel for what it's like to play against BIG and seasoned men and wish them all well for an injury free 2007 at Williamstown. Let's just focus on what we've got right now, Did's still on the injury list, Brodie suspended, a new look forward line and we can't expect Buckley to be all over the ground like in previous years. Someone will have to elevated due to the Rusling injury, how about having a look at our mid-field (delivery to the forwards), give Danny Nicholls a go!!
