No bias towards Lonie, Loki. He got the ball enough, just was as damaging as he should have been.

My apologies for the over reaction concerning your comments, I certainly hate it when people paint who I am in the wrong light and context. I myself am not the Denial ridden, optimist, I have certainly had my rants in the past concerning Collingwood's prospects, but I just have to say that even anyone in the media questioning fitness or the preparation of Collingwood based upon the performance last night has it seriously wrong. We were missing 11 senior players and North had their whole senior side playing....we had 10 New players, one of which picked up an aussie rules ball for the first time last year! the fact that we stayed within 10 goals of North last night is a great prospect.....The side lacked direction in the first half, they suffered heavily from stage fright...In the Second half they showed alot of determination, guts and a little bit of pride and things started to improve greatly.

As I said I am certainly not the Rosey Glassed optimist you described and I apologise for the outburst against you.....We support our teams in different ways and I respect that....I just hope you will not write off celebrating that Flag in 2007 based upon Friday Night, because believe me mate, the season proper will show a completely different storey!

Cheers

No worries NP. I just hope you and the others are right about the team starting to hit some form and win once the missing players are back.
I'm NOT a pessimist by nature, I try to assess reality. This time last year I backed the 'pies to make the top six confidently and won a few bets along the way. All I can say is right or wrong, I definitely will not be making such a bet this year. I just don't get the same vibe about this team.
I just sat through a complete recorded replay of last night's game......I wont say anymore but I fervently hope and pray that the posters here are dead set right about the missing players making the huge difference.
I promise to stay totally positive about Collingwood.....!! At least I'll try hard to....
Lazza mate
Im sitting back here smokin a Cuban laughin my Tits off...with our blend of young exciting players and the Elleven that didnt travel to the Gold Coast i just cant help but feel the warm spring weather shining above the Magpies come September...its all feeling good this end of town :)
Joffa dude,

Any wonder you are such a bloody legend :P You are inspiring and have helped me reconsider my negative views on this season. It was just that I was sad when we got done last week by Sydney but I was bitterly disappointed losing to my bloody pick as this year's wooden spooner North by 50 bloody points  I was honest in my comments. I felt we were hopeless.
But I do realise that when at full strength and in form, we can beat anyone out there :!:
Let the season proper begin.... 8)
Mate i had a bad time watching it on TV.. after a bad umpiring decision i was verbally upset towards the umpires which got me into trouble for swearing in front of the kids i apologised to the kids.. later on after a bad passage of play by the pies i knocked a glass of Coke arse over tit it was accidental and got into more trouble, at half time i was preparing an egg sandwhich and left the boiling eggs in saucepan on the stove and forgot about them and burnt the crap out of the saucepan and got into trouble again, after Brad Dicks goal one of the kids sat on the remote and accidentally changed the TV station when i questioned him on his timing of wanting to sit on the remote i was told to grow up...so you see i was defeated a long time before the pies were... i had a shit night...collingwood had a shit night..but theres always next week
Go Pies!!...keep the faith brother Lazza!

Only saw half of 3rd and 4th quarters. Agree with Cam on Rhyce. His decision making is poor and has to learn to back himself again. Liked what I saw of Dick & Pendlebury. Poor Scotty Burns and Johno had to carry the can too much.

My thoughts on the match:

1. Pendles; 29 touches, most of them effective, can kick a goal, classy, welcome to the midfeild! along with O'Bree, Burns, Swan and Johnson he will be an important part of it.

2. Speaking of Johnson I thought he played very well, he is an outside accumilator, runs the lines will scrap, long kicks to advantage, looks in fine form.

3. Burns and Wakes both looked fit and competant, I reckon they are both capable of holding thier spots in the 18 this year, Wakes may need to make way for a runner on occasion when there is no match-up, but he is still our best CHB for the Monster CHF and i'm glad we have him on our list.

4. Cook and Toovey both looked to have some tricks and ability to me, have to remember that niether of them has ever played a game against that level of opposition, they are both still light-framed kids and they both IMO showed glimpses.

5. Of the 06 intake Dick showed flashes of class and skill, happy to have him on board.

6. Thought Thomas, Cloke and Egan struggled to get into the game, but they are still young and the run will have done them good.

7. Maxy and Heath both looked all class, they are both now in my starting 18 for the back six, Heath especially looks as if he will not take a backwards step or stall in his second full season as a starting 22 player

8. As for the negatives, my main concernes where with Rusling and Rhyce, Rus just did not inspire my confidance, not because he couldn't get a mark or kick a goal, but because it seemed every time I noticed him I found myself asking why he could never seem to catch the defender who was running the ball out of Norths backline. Say what you want about Tarrant but he did at least manage the old run-down from behind once or twice a game and Ruz from all accounts is quicker over the turf than Taz, so he should be doing that even if he can't get the delivery for a mark and goal. Rhyce ran hard and tried hard but just made too many turnovers, tried to do too much and needs to focus on simplfying his game and honing his skills, was in my best 22 late last year, now I'm not so sure.

9. Nicholls, Brown amd Iles all looked a little out of thier depth, glad they got a taste, not sure they are ready for the big time just yet, but happy to have them on our list.

10. O'Brien and Davies seem to me like fringe players, but they have grit and thats fine.

11. Medhurst showed a bit, looked fit and solid, but not over the top heavy for his size, hoping for good things.

12. Lonie is an odd player, definately outside, looked a squib the other night, but when we have our hard-nuts in the midfeild and our best team on the park he is in my best 22 simply because he can tag thru the midfeild, run-with taller players, pass the ball 50 meters pin-point to a chest, and kick a goal from around 55m. Also he can blay in the backline.

13. Overall my biggest dissapointment was not getting to see Clarke, I hope he plays against the Saints, along with Stanley, another I would like to get a look at.

My best side for 07:

FORWARDS:
Holland Buckley Davis
Didak Rocca Licuria

CENTRELINE:
Johnson O'Bree Lonie

RUCKS:
Fraser
Burns
Swan

BACKS:
Heath Wakelin Maxwell
Clement Presti Lockyer

BENCH:
Richards
Pendlebury
Thomas
Cloke

EMG:
Egan
Medhurst
Rhyce

My best side given the injuries:

FORWARDS:
Rocca Buckley Davis
Egan Cloke Medhurst

CENTRELINE:
Johnson O'Bree Lonie

RUCKS:
Fraser
Burns
Swan

BACKS:
Heath Wakelin Maxwell
Clement Presti Lockyer

BENCH:
Richards
Pendlebury
Licuria
Thomas

EMG:
Rusling
Rhyce
Cook

Who I would like to see against the Saints:

Clarke
Stanley
Reid

That's all folks!

GO PIES!

Oh and just on the Rucks, I thought Richards did OK, saw him get a few possies and contest, and Bryan contested alright too, but looked proppy round the ground (I assume due to the knee clean-up) I think that it's way too early to write off our Ruck division this year.

We have;

Fraser
Richards and
Bryan

as starting ruck options,

we have

Reid

same hieght as Bryan and possibly still growing to groom as a mobile ruck and

Cloke and
Rocca

as handy round the ground 'jump into the other bloke like you mean it' negating ruck pinch hitters.

so, in order of current usefulness as center bounce options we have;

Fraser
Richards
Bryan
Cloke
Rocca
Reid

Six guys 195 or above is a pretty standard Ruck division. I'm just hoping Richards can stand up and make it through the whole season un-injured and Bryan can get his head on right and commit himself to proffesional AFL footy with the pies, then i think you will see Fraser start to tear games apart with the support he has always needed.

Cheers.
go pies!

North's SUPERIOR fitness?? WTF have Collingwood being doing in Arizona? Doing "laps" of the main drag in their luxury bus? What training has been happening at Lexus Centre? How can Collingwood lack fitness to a pissy little team like North just 4 weeks before the main season? And posters here make light of it??
...and that is why most football followers have no idea.

Um, you don't get super AFL fit with 1 or 2 pre seasons and a trip to Arizona. Half the team had NEVER played against a fully fit senior AFL team before. There's also a difference between running high altitude laps to get fit and running for 4 quarters with superior bodies pummeling you at the same time while you try to kick a football.

Get a clue.

I have high expectations too, during the REAL season.

And dont give me the "I'm older than you crap" it's very tired and past it's used by date as a retort.

We played Swans - LOST

We played North - LOST

OK, we have heard all the standard excuses about them being practice matches, not worth much, playing youth etc etc.

Tell you what REALLY worries me? Reading stuff like this:

I can tell you that I'm extremely worried about this season and Collingwood's preparation, even if I'm on my Pat Malone......
Lazza, the Roos are 4-6 weeks ahead of us in their training regime. I'm more than happy for them to be well ahead of us at this stage as it is a long season and the ultimate aim is the H&A season, and finals.

Agree--fitness compounds at an elite level. Nathan Buckley has made that point several times over the years.

I look forward to seeing Rusling take a mark over his head, he is looking very one-dimensional at the moment and was the biggest worry to come from the game. Too easily beaten when the ball goes to ground and looks to have the turning circle of a truck.

Dick looked very dangerous and threw his body in which is a great sign.

A certain "Eddie from Ringwood" posted on a certain Weatherzone forum Friday afternoon at 16.53 about the weather at the time, and the fires in the Dandenongs yesterday afternoon (which he was also apparently in proximity to).

Wow...quite the jetsetter!

My take on last night btw - shithouse. Hope there's plenty of improvement, because there were few shining lights and not many surprises. Suspect recent travel took the edge of us (Eddie would know about the effects of travel I suspect).

Thanks brother Joffa! I have also been duly chastised by Jackass and Top Gun up here with comments reflecting yours. I think I may have unduly negatively overreacted in haste after the sad emotion of another bloody loss and having my magpie crazy 10 year old son cry on my lap because his mighty magpies lost!! AGAIN!
Funny about your egg story at half time, I though the 'pies couldn't even beat an egg on Friday night  At least you didn't get it all over your face.....
I'm in a far more positive mind now - Yep, I'm sure I am.....ummmm...... We can beat the Saints on Friday.....I think we can.....I hope we can.....ummmm...I hope we get within 6 goals of the bastards... God help me....:-)
