I’m not sure what to think of last night's game. Great to see us beat a top team away from home. Malthouse must take a lot of credit for the win, as the Swans should have beaten us last night. I haven't seen the stats, but we really seemed to struggle in the clearances, and without Swan and Holland, I only felt comfortable when Buckley was playing in the guts. How we manufactured a win against the premiers with just one ruckman and so many youngsters playing still puzzles me.

The Swans showed just how vulnerable we are at the moment in the early minutes of the third and towards the end of the fourth, and it is something we are going to have to work on if we are going to be a real threat come September. On our day we can beat any team, but Fraser needs some help and our midfield needs to be at full strength.

I thought Davis, Didak, Fraser and Lonie were great. Lonie looks like a different player this year and it looks like Malthouse's perseverance with him down back is now starting to reap rewards. He now gives a lot more to the team than the occasional 60m goal on the run.

Not sold on Morrison or Egan at the moment. Egan looked like a fish out of water early on in the game. Never really looked in position to get the ball and never seemed to make the right decision when he got it. However, towards the end, when it really counted, he started to bob up in the right places and his kicks started to look purposeful. He really looks like a confidence player to me and I hope he got a good shot of it last night. Not sure it is worth persisting with Morrison. He is a footballer, but does he still have the legs for the game. He certainly doesn’t seem to have the hunger of a Burns to compensate for his lack of speed.

Rhyce Shaw looked ordinary at times, with a couple of horrible turnovers, but his timing seemed to be coming back by the end, and his run out of defence is going to be critical if we are going to mix it. Heath just gets better and better, cant heap enough praise on this kid. Looks more like a seasoned footballer than a rookie.

We were playing a lot of developing players last night - Daisy, Pendles, O'Brien, T.Cloke, Heater, and Ego – and the team produced something quite special last night to beat a very talented Sydney team.

Good win.

I have been critical at times of MM coaching (Melb game) but last night he worked a plan that was perfect and carried out well. Their decision making was also good, I was in awe a couple of times how they worked themselves out of trouble.

His matchups were good. Lonie can hurt Goodes and he did. OBree was good on Kirk as well. Thought Harry was terrific on Davis.

Credit must be given to Morrison - he was shocking v Melb and I wanted him out but gee he took his second chance.

Rhyce was sensational - gave us a lot of run and was a good link man.

Think the best thing was not only coming from behind but the performance of our 5 teenagers. All good. Egan I thought played well, Trav was good at it and did nice stuff off the footy you would not have seen on TV. Pendles and Thomas were good - both were a little soft at one or two contests though which will need to be worked on.

Clearly Didak was BOG but Fraser was right behind him and indeed Presti who worked Hall right up the ground.

Best win of the season for guts.

Got to agree with you about Presti. Hall was in terrific form last night, and a lesser fullback would have taken a bath. Sure Hall got the better of Presti in patches, but Presti pushed him all the way and possibly was the difference between a win and a loss.

Goodes was also terrific, he is a brilliant footballer, and it was an unbelievable effort by Lonie to counter his influence.

Not overly confident about O'Brien, when it comes to man on man contest. I hope he learnt a few things from his efforts against Davis.

Great win blah blah blah, however should we persist with Morrison? He was servicable but not outstanding, especially in the 3rd Qtr. Glad to see Rhyce coming good...though I'm not really a fan of his.
Should we rest players /Bucks, Burns/ when we have a percentage booster coming up? I just wanna see our boys really pump Richmond.

P.S. Good luck to Sav.

Ryche Shaw - Welcome back 2005 Ryhce.. We have missed you. He added pace and ball carry through the half backline and midfield and will now not fall out of this team unless injured.. Did anyone notice how many times the Shaw boys spotted each other up? Werent cheap kicks like the bowden boys either.

Heath Shaw - I rate Okeefe very very highly and this is not just the collingwood in me saying this but has anyone here seen him so thoroughly beaten? Heath Shaw was amazing..playing with his brother seemed to lift them both a cog.. i look forward to many years of it.
Well, I guess with Rhys Shaw, that makes four Shaw brothers on the paddock together - what a spectacle! - now if they all played with the three Clokesters at the same time, nearly 40% of the team would be from 2 families! Almost beginning to sound Tasmanian!

Better ask Zeke about that.

Great game, but still scratching my head trying to work out how Pendles "stole" that ball.

Whilst watching the action unfold on tv, I was thinking "wtf, how'd he do that???"

Very impressed with that move!

Now that's five Shaw brothers out there - Ray and Tony better buy TV sets pretty quickly or we'll all be overrun with their little tackers!

That was an instinctive 'basketball stripping' move on Pendles part. See it in the NBA/NBL all the time.

Great move - probably see all teams beginning to use it now.

Its Rhyce Shaw.

Morrison was great. I thought he played on Davis, can anyone correct me? Whoever he played on got towelled up because the Swan forward line never got on top.

Presti's game on Hall was huge. Hall had a 5 minute patch where he really got on top, but he was forced to get most of the ball out on the wing. Presti had him covered more often than not. Considering the Swan pumped it too him 90% of the time, Holding Barry to under 5 goals was going to be match winning. Presti not only held him to less goal, but rebounded nicely off him. Clement was also inspirational in getting back to help his mate.

Rhyce was back to some great form. His kicking did let him down early, but i thought it improved as the game wore on. He needed a bit of time to adjust to the pace, but did so very quickly and kicked an amazing goal, as well as hitting most targets after the first quarter. Him and Heater really looked like they had a great understanding with each other. It could be 40 touches a game between those 2. Dream team next year!!!!

Thomas and Pendlebury were very serviceable. Great news especially for Thomas who has been a bit down of late. Egan was more than serviceable as well. Doubt he has done enough to hold his spot, but it was great to see him come in late and do some good things. His tackling lets him down but probably always will. His size and agility make him a difficult opponent. His efforts at ground level set up a few goals.

Josh Fraser was great around the ground, and won 25 hitouts...but i thought Jolly got on top of him at crucial stages. However on whole Fraser was the far more effective player. Just thought that the Swans won a few too many clearences. If our backline wasnt so solid it couldve hurt us more. There were time where Fraser really looked outclassed in the ruck. However his versatility around the ground just provided headaches and his ability to move forward and kick goals in great. Has really gone a long way to providing the Magpies with a quality ruckman this year.

Tarrant looked amazing out of the wings. His kicking is pretty good in the field. Having Rocca up forward really allowed Tarrant to go roaming. He was able to drag Leo Barry away from the goalsquare and really exposed him on the lead. ALthogh Tarrants match will not be regarded as one of his best, i thought his 8 marks out on wings was great. Sydney were struggling to kick to leading targets, whilst Tarrant really provided us with a good one. Rocca was marking a few ball up forward too which gave Tarrant this freedom. Our ability to rotate the forward line was important.

Bucks lifted in the last and took contrl of the clearences. Thats why he is regarded as one of the best players of all time. He reads the play so well. Thought our whole midfield worked really hard. O'Bree, Licca and especially Scott Burns were back to their hardest best, whilst Rhyce, Lonie, Heater, Pendles and THomas added the pace and class. Rhyce and Lonie in particular really carved the Swans up. THey broke the lines and kicked goals as well. Their pace adds a dimension to the team.

Harry also made an impressive comeback. I think he played on O'Keefe, but im not sure. However he did some really good things. Our defence in general was just right on top. Clement absolutely towelled up O'Loughlin. Picked up in excess of 20 touches as well, which were all quality.

Didak was been tagged very closely by Crouch. I thought Crouch had the better of him early, but Didak broke the tag nicely. Early, Didak was dropping marks, missing easy shots on goal and was not clean with his hands. This was Crouch's pressure. However, not many players get on top of crouch. Didak did and kicked an amazing 4 goals. He was everywhere. He has really become an A grade player, and this was a great test for him. With Buckley ageing, Didak will now receive the best tagger week in week out for the rest of his career. Last night he beat one of the best convincingly. Johnson got injured, so it put further emphasis on Didak.

Didak and Johnson will become the targeted midfielders in our team. Didak really impressed me last night.

The run home has begun....we are sitting pretty.
There's more to life than footy.........just not much more.

I think Harry was on Davis at times as well from memory.

I loved Bucks telling Davis he shit himself on that mark attempt.

The final scoreline flattered the swans as we'd basically taken the foot off the pedal, but apart from the win, there were some seriously great hilights.

1. Rhyce Shaw's blind turn goal. That will give him great confidence, ya just cant do that on a wonky knee.

2. Presti outmarking Hall and running thru the middle of the ground. That was a " you ain't so bad beeeaaach"

3. Pendles stealing that ball off Williams. That was just class and the look on Williams face as he looked down at his hands to see where the ball had gone was priceless

4. Egan. I can't put my finger on any specific thing he did, but I just formed the opinion that this kid had grown up a little and was now prepared to do the hard work.

5. Lonie's game on Goodes was sensational. towards the end Goodes was cramping up and was seriously sooky.

For the record. Lonie had 17 kicks, 6 handballs, 10 marks, 6 inside 50's and 2 goals.

Yum Yum (goodes for those old enough to remember "the goodies" on the ABC) had 9 kicks, 8 handballs, 5 marks, 2 inside 50's and 2 (cheap) goals. Thats an ass kicking whichever way you look at it.

Overall, the thing that impressed was how we were prepared to be patient when the swans put that slo-mo crap on us and harrass them out of the ball. Watch out blackbirds when we play you nest, cos you're gonna go down.

All in all, a very good win with 1/3 of the team still teanagers.

Best win for the season for me. Pretty much a team effort, even Morrison looked Ok (although his kicking is ordinary). Just loved the work ethic from the boys.
What I loved:
Presti on Hall - great one on one contest
Didaks game (how good a season is he having?) and the fact he is so dangerous to the opposition. Carved Crouch up.
Josh was terrific all night
The grunt of Burnsy (what a star he is!)
Rhyce Shaw - welcome back!
Heath backing in for a courageous mark in a pack with Hall running into him (and clearing the ball as well!)
Tazza - great work leading up the ground and ran hard all night
Pendles basketball steal,
Rocca jumping and punching the air with his goal on the half time siren (I was doing the same thing at home with him! :D )
Lonies two first quarter goals etc etc

Was not happy with them letting the Swans kick 4 or so unanswered goals in the final term, in the end the scoreline flattered the Swans. But no real complaints from me - great game overall from the team - and a fantastic confidence booster for the boys.

It was a great relief to me to see that our boys have reached a ridgy didge real deal standard where we can safely expect success for a long tiime to come.

Phew! Last week's game was not a bubble burst.

I'm not worried about The Crows and West Coast and Melbourne results. Those teams have been around for 2 or 3 years working up to their current position. OTOH I feel we are nowhere near at our maximum capabilities yet. So many players are teasing us with what they can do. If we can get some of the youngsters to grow in experience over the next 10 weeks we'll be a much tougher proposition during the finals.

I can see Mighty Mick figuring for the future already - not only to build serious depth but also a Collingwood Mark 2 for next year and beyond - the predicted dynasty post Bucks.

When I watch other good teams they seem efficient and boring whereas THIS year our team has discovered the X-Factor spectacular - or is it bias - like me being a proud parent :) - No I really do think we are bringing flair and excitement back into football.

This could indeed be one of the best Collingwood teams in our history - just emerging from its awkward, ugly duckling, fledgling stage.
