Can we keep up our good form? Who should be in and out?
I'm hoping for Pies by 29 points.

They have had the woods on us for the last two years, but now its time for payback espeically in 2004 rnd 12, when there supporters had that banner "Finals Over", it will be cracker of a game, but i think we have the edge in our Foward Line with Tarrant back, Rocca, Fraser, Didak, Bucks, Davis. Melbourne's defence i don't think can match up with our talls, i say Pies by 3 goals.

Just noticed Whelan is injured and in doubt - he would have been first pick to tag didak or davis and has done well on didak in the past. That's a nice little bonus.
With Miller out, they will be stretched for options back and be more easily matched up forward. Shut down Neitz and there's still Yze, Davey and Robertson, but I think we've got the backline to do the job and do it well.
Pies by 8 goals.

Yeah they have forward structure but shut down one of them, especially Neitz or Roberston and i would say that we can deny the other forwards from kicking a winning score with the solid backline we have, i would say its one of the most underrated in the league...KYPREO wrote:Just noticed Whelan is injured and in doubt - he would have been first pick to tag didak or davis and has done well on didak in the past. Their backline is stretched pretty thin, and with Taz coming back in, our forward lines is looking pretty good. I'm not sure whether Bucks will play forward. He'll probably start midfield, and maybe go forward if Taz and anthony aren't firing. Does anyone think someone should maybe tag Bruce? He gets alot of the ball, maybe Brodie could take him out of the game. Not sure. Davey could cause a few problems with the speed.
As for their forward line. Jimmy should mark Neitz I think, Yze is a tough one - maybe C1 if he's named? Wakes should probably take Robbo.
On paper we should win. If we play our best, we will win easily. I'm thinking 17 or 18 goals will get us there comfortably.

At the selection table:
Out: Caracella, Maxwell, Swan (all inj), Morrison (too slow)
In: Tarrant, O'Brien, R Shaw (or Rowe, if Shaw not fit), Thomas (if sufficiently rested *) or Davies
* More likely to be held back through the mid-season break which follows this match and to return against Sydney in Sydney, a match now looming as the biggest of the season to date.
The casualty lists:
Melbourne
Brent Moloney (groin) test
Matthew Whelan (hip/buttock) test
Paul Johnson (shoulder) 1-2 weeks
Nathan Brown (hamstring) 1-2 Weeks
Alistair Nicholson (foot) 2 Weeks
Collingwood
Dane Swan (hamstring) test
Nick Maxwell (broken leg) 4-6 weeks
Blake Caracella (neck) indefinite
This match is likely to be won and lost in two places - the ruck/clearances and up forward.
Key ruckmen Josh Fraser and Jeff White are having successful seasons. Backup ruckman Guy Richards has stepped up in recent weeks, with a particularly commendable role in negating Charman and McDonald last Saturday night. White's backup, Mark Jamar, doesn't seem to offer the same support.
The Fraser/Richards combination will have a small edge over their Melbourne counterparts and I expect Richards in particular to dominate the hitouts, giving Collingwood's mosquito fleet the majority of the ball in the middle. Fraser and White are very similar types around the ground and their duel should be a highlight of the match.
Around the packs, the work of Buckley, Burns, Licuria, Holland, Johnson, O'Bree, Davis, Didak and newcomer Pendlebury (plus Thomas or Davies) will be critical to get the advatage over McLean, Bruce, Johnstone, Pickett and McDonald. Collingwood seem to have the edge here given the number of players Mick Malthouse has at his disposal to rotate in and out, thereby keeping fresh legs on the field all day.
Although breaking even in hitouts last week, Collingwood dominated the clearances last Saturday night against Brisbane and I expect a similar level of dominance against Melbourne.
The forward lines of both sides reek with talent. Rocca and Tarrant, plus the "resting" Buckley will create headaches for any side. Throw in the speedy Davis, who started at FF last weekend, plus the dynamic Didak, and Melbourne will have their hands full, especially given the loss of key defenders. Similarly, Melbourne's forward lineup of Neitz, Robertson, Bruce, Davey and Yze will cause enormous problems for Collingwood, now missing two key defenders as well.
On goals scored, Rocca (34), Tarrant (19), Davis (19), Didak (18 ) and Buckley (15) seem to offer more and better avenues to goal than Neitz (24), Robertson (18 ), Davey (16), Bruce (13) and Yze (11). However, on their day, any of the Melbourne forwards can kick a bag and will all need to be contained for the 'Pies to be successful.
Expect this to be a game of many colours; matchups will change regularly during the match and it may well come down to being a matter of which coach more quickly responds to the ever-changing onfield situation to win the game.
In an extremely close one between the two Victorian sides most likely to be there in September, and in front of a massive (90,000+) crowd, I think the 'Pies, with their immense self-confidence and selfless game, to prevail. By 8 points, in an absolute, edge-of-the-seat, heart-stopping thriller. Don't miss it!

I'm guessing it will be Thomas, Tarrant and O'Brian in for Swan, Carracella and Maxwell, with no other changes, good win this week, boys have a 9 day break, shouldn't disrupt the side more than you have to and we need lots of defensive options to contain Melbourne.
Set up somthing like
5 Forwards;
Bucks and Leon at full forward trying to isolate one out
Dids Rocca and Taz roaming further up the ground, delivering and kicking thier own
Lonie and Johno on the wings providing run and long kicking
Fraser rucking to O'Bree, Burnsy and Licca, thats talent feeding to three hard bastards.
A 7 man backline consisting of
Clement trying to get loose and rebound
Heath Wakes O'Brian doing what they do best, balance containment with attack, and
Lockyer Presti Morrison down back doing a job of stopping Davey, Neitz and Robertson
finally , starting on the bench;
Guy
Thomas
Holland
Pendlebury being the junior ruck/midfield division
just on the youngsters;
I thought that Pendlebury really added something to our mix at the stoppages, and Thomas can really lift the side with his dash and aeriel ability. Heath is probably in the best 6 players for us every week and O'Brian isn't intimidated by anyone and has arms like a gorilla. Guy propbaly also counts as a youngster at this stage, so we will be going in with a lot of youth, and Melbourne will try to take advantage of that, however, I reckon we have the comaradere and experience to give as good as we get, and that bit of youthful exuberance and excitement will help us more than hurt us.
I doubt Melbourne will try to stack thier forward line, we have Rocca, Tarrant, Buckley and Fraser who all demand a matchup up forwand and anyway with Wakes, Presti, Clement, O'Brian, Lonie, Pendlebury and even Bucks all capable of playing tall in the backline it probably makes more sense to try and exploit our structure with medium forwards, which they have in abundance.
I suspect
Lonie will run with Bruce,
Lockyer will get Davey,
Morrison or Heath might get a job on Yze.
Clement is our usual matchup for Robertson
Presti will get Nietz
Wakes will man Dun
up the other end I'm guessing
Rivers maybe on Taz
Holland will take Rocca
Carroll might get Bucks
beyond that I am not sure that the Dees have the small backmen to take Davis and Didak.
In the middle it will be tough, I don't think there will be any hard tags though, we will just try to grind them down with our hard running and physical play, and they will try to do the same to us and hope there class outside can win the day.
should be a cracking match!

Presti will start on Neitz no doubt and i would think Clement is a great matchup for Robertson.
Robertson only gets 10 touches or so a game...but usually kicks 5 goals. Stop these goals and he becomes a highly ineffective player. Presti and Jimmy should pretty much shut out the demons main 2 forwards.
Yze is interesting. I would think maybe Heath Shaw may get a crack...but Tarkyn Lockyer seems like the practical choice. HOwever Lockyer will probably get first crack at Aaron Davey. It will be interesting to which of Leon Davis v Davey comes out on top. These are the 2 igniters of the respective teams. Perhaps the guy that plays better will have a telling impact on the game. Then there is also Byron...but he is likely to play in the backline so it may be up to a guy like Burns to keep him accountable
Lonie demolished Brad Green last year...i reckon he may get the job again since he has the capability of playing on him in the backline. HOlland should get Travis Johnstone. Brodie is a bit out of touch...but is till the best option to tag out the demons playmaker. Johnstone is an amazing player...he'd have to be up there with goal assists as well this year. When he touches it, something happens.
Bruce is a tough one. Id think Licuria would get first crack on him or Lonie would be an option...although i think Lonie is perfectly suited to Green.
The key is for Fraser and Richards to play tight on Jeff White. White dominated last week against Ackland and Blake with over 20 hitouts and 20 possessions. Probably the gamebreaker.
It is also important we pay due respect to guys like Brock Mclean, Bate, Dunn who have all snuck under opposition radars.
Up forward, i doubt Rivers and co have the height and strength to stop Tarrant and Rocca. I hope Whelan does not play...it would really free up Didak.
