Dissappointing to lose, but we lost very well.
The players were very competitive and with a bit of luck and better umpiring would have won easily.
Josh is Back!!! Swany gets stronger and stronger and OB was outstanding in the middle.
Another 3rd quater win too!!! Thats 7 from 7 peoples.
But best of all was the way Mick and Gotchy outcoached Worsfold. Great effort all round.
Many more positives than the negative of the loss peoples. Bring on the handbaggers with their new found and misguided sense of hope.

Whilst I agree it was an heroic effort by Frase to ruck virtually unchanged, not having a proper backup backman didn't work and it might well have cost us the match. We just couldn't mount a last comeback after the Weagles popped through two late goals as Frase sat on the bench, knackered.
However, he was still well beaten by Cox and Seaby. Whilst much has been said about Fraser's 28 possessions and 10 marks, he managed only 13 effective hitouts, whilst Cox had 22 possessions, 11 marks and 22 hitouts and Seaby had 10 possessions, 4 marks and 12 hitouts. Cox was also superlative around the ground and contributed a goal to Fraser's 2 goals 1 behind. The rucking honours clearly belong to the Weagles.
Judd was rampant in midfield, racking up 32 possessions and kicking 3 goals 3 behinds and was ably supported by Fletcher (30 poss, 0.0) plus Cousins (23 and 1.1) and Kerr (22, 0.1). By contrast, Johnno played virtually a sole hand against that lot (26 poss, 11 marks, no score). Our next best mids were Licca (23, 1.0) and Burnsie (21, 2.0). Lonie was in the thick of it fighting for the ball a lot but Cheese reverted to type in big matches with 16 handballs (largely of the "helicopter" type), not trusting himself to kick the bloody thing.
Our best players were to be found down back - Heater was magnificent (29 possessions, 10 marks) and Swannie probably just shaded him because he moved all over the place (25 poss, 12 marks) and kicked 3.1, to round off a 'Pies BOG performance.
Jimmy is looking only a shadow of his 2005 form, Presti was slaughtered, Maxy and Harry were quiet, but Wakes looked really good in a return to form. Lockyer picked up a lot of easy balls but his running out into space made for a good target for the guys doing the hard yards well back.
We were very ordinary up forward, except for Neon's 3rd quarter cameo. Both Rocca and Taz were kept quiet but Rocca still managed 3 goals. Taz plays "sooky" too much; his strengths are mobility, marking and long kicking. Why the bloody idiot tries to get into one-on-one shoving matches all the time beats me, as he's just playing into the defenders' hands. Then, once the ball is punched away, he goes crying to the umps for frees. He's just not going to get them whilst the umps think he's staging which is what it is, far too often. Dids was also very quiet.
Overall, we were ordinary but bleedin' brilliant in patches, however, you can't win matches against top opposition playing in patches. There were too many blokes down on their best and, yet, we almost won this one. I'm now convinced we are the real deal in 2006. However, that means there can be no rest; we need to maintain our lofty position on the ladder by continuing to win and next week we come up against a Geelong side bolstered by a win and who also had a rampant rucking duo in King and Ottens on Friday night. This one was already going to be a danger game as we were coming off the Subiaco road trip but now looks more ominous. It's going to be touch, very tough. A light week on the training track will be essential (we play Saturday night at the MCG). We must win this one to regain our momentum.

Agree with most posts here, i think the idea of only taking one real ruckman into the game was almost losing it at the selection table, we have to address our problem of clearences or we are going to continue to get flogged during the year.
One thing did every1 notice we looked very very flat!! Even when leon put us in front, there were no celebrations??

SO PROUD of the boys they were great. Even tho we lost u still have u think....
MCG....
NATHAN BUCKLEY.....
R SHAW PLAYING ON JUDD....
PRESTI wont be beaten by lynch again....
TRAVIS CLOKE or RUSLING possibly....
would say better umpiring....BUT THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!
adding T cloke and bucks gives a new dimension they will b at least one defender short.
Daisy will b better for the experience of subi...seemed a bit overwhelmed, did some good things tho, but its all part of the learning.
HEATH SHAW IS SO GOOD! lol backs himself all the time.
U DONT WIN FLAGS AT SUBI.... not scared of west coast anymore...not that we ever were
GO PIES!!

VERY DISAPOINTED
I have to agree did look a lil flat, they almost looked like they weren't that fussed if they lost. I know it was good to not get flogged up there but cant help be dissapointed. Our belovered daisy cost two goals from clangers and shaw too, although shaw was great. Credit to big joshy doing all the ruck alone which i think was a stupid decision. swan, davis good game.
And as for Taz what the f**k is going on with him? he needs to get a bullet up his behind!
Cant help what think it would of been like with Bucks???

Dont bother thinking about Buckley....it was our choice to leave him out so he is no excuse at all. Tarrant was not all that bad either. He had a very good opponent. He saw that he was not going to do much damage up forward so he got out of the 50, took 2 opponents with him and left Leon one out with Wirripanda. Tarrant took 9 marks...still a good effort. Shouldve got a few frees as well. A goal wouldve been handy but.
The ruck was obviously going to be the concern. In the end we did better than i thought as Fraser was a destroyer around the ground, and Cox got most of his disposals behind the wing. HOwever the weight of 2 quality ruckman against 1 was the difference in the end. Judd killed us in spurts. Most of the time Brodie was ontop, but then JUdd would lift in 5 minute spurts and get the eagles back on top.
Overall, one of the best games of footy i have seen in a long long time. Cant be dissapointed, it was never a game that we expected winning, but we did come very close. There is no doubt that the side i witnessed last night is a top 6 team at worst. Compare them to St Kilda and Geelong on Friday night and you'd have to agree that we are a quality side. West Coast are going to be very hesistant when they play us on the G.
Didnt like the Jason Cloke for Travis Cloke selection move, and Rocca was definately hurt early. BUt a great game which i enjoyed

There's more to life than footy.........just not much more.
Contrary to what others think, I thought MM's ploy of just playing Josh without a back up ruckman nearly won us the match. Josh was magnificent, and made it clear that he wants to be the ruckman. I think Pebbles injured shoulder actually cost us the game, as he was clearly restricted for most of the match. Make no mistake, we've got a lot of improvement still to come to our side. Rhyce Shaw, Pendlebery, Rusling and some bloke called Bucks will no doubt be in our best side before the year's out. My main disappointments were with Maxwell and Harry, but they are both young and will no doubt improve in time. I'm not sure why Travis was dropped for Jason, but poor old C1 struggled again when asked to do anything other than defend dourly. With Presti in our side, we can't afford to have another one dimensional player on the backline. Despite all these criticisms, the team is definitely on track for a top four spot, and I would expect us to flog the cats and dogs in the coming fortnight.

Holland was never going to be quick enough to run with Judd pace is not his strength.Caution: Hot Pies wrote:Holland was too slow and not accountable enough for Judd.
Holland did ok in parts but lets not forget that he did not put himself in that role.
O'Bree started on Cousins for about 5 minutes before he was moved but you could say the same as above about that match up.

The guys did well... Frase lifted... Leon was magic... Lonie was great... We just couldn't get the whole package together. It gives us promise for our next few games at the MCG...
Jason Cloke did what he was expected to do... He got the ball out with his punches... He did the long kicks... Don't bag him for not trying.
The Issue with Judd was that MM possibly should have considered rotating players on him... Lics, Holland, Lonie, Tarks all have the pace to run with Judd for a short time... But we live and learn... and we definently learnt ALOT!

Last night was dissapointed. And thought we had played well.
After some time, was still disapointed we couldn't finish it off, but we didn't play that well.
Considering Rocca, Dids and Taz had little impact on the game you could say we were not near our best. Can't really blame the engine room either, i'd suggest they nearly broke even.
We missed R. Shaw. Is the perfect match up for Judd. Has the pace and height, build and stamina to go with him. Next time we play em Racer should be match fit and in the senior team.
On top of that Bux to come in and improve the side and be that extra forward that needs to be closed down or he'll hurt em bad on the score board.
Need to go in with two rucks next time we play them. And for any other game for that matter. Just gives us much more flexability. Allows fraser to go down as a permanent forward if needed (ie. when Taz ad Pebs arn't firing) or give fraser a rest for that 25% of the game. Surely Cam is the answer too. Can crash the ruck and run hard as a link option for 7 mins at the end of the Qs and also pinch hit in the forward line. It ain't rocket science! However I'd suggest MM is a better judge than I. But I don't get it.
Thought we lost out not having three talls forward. Its been our strength all year. While Trav hasn't done heaps, I believe he does enough to keep his spot and for team balance. Not many defenses have three good tall backs! He is only 18-19 so you have to put up with inconsistantcy. If he was rested, more the case for Cam or second ruck to allow fraser to go forward.
The worry looking forward is that the Pies are flat/weary against the Cats. Cats will flood like against the saints. They'll be worried about our forward line. Just hope our intensity is there. Our tall forwards are due for a big one after two quiet ones in a row.
Cats will get 8 day break and Pies a 7 Day break with Travel which equates to a 6 Day Break IMO. This week is a worry to me.
Likely changes IMO:
Bucks for Carracella (no brainer)
Cam Cloke or Richards for O'Brien (Back to Rookie list unfortunately, Need second ruck against King and Ottens, Can't expect Fraser to bust a boiler again. otherwise we'll kill the poor guy)
Like to see Travis in. Maybe for J. Cloke. (But this leaves us a defender short).
Have to question the wisdom of drafting Illes (instead of rookie listing)over promoting O'brien. I guess they wanted to keep the preseason draft option open in case a decent uncontracted player came avaiable.
GO PIES!
