Was relegated to listening on the radio today - I do enjoy Drew Morphett's commentary, he's so biased, I feel like I'm really at the game!
Everything's been said on here I think - we mucked around with it way too much in the first half (from what i could HEAR) and finally sorted it out in the second. Was really impressed with Swan and Shaw, both just keep hassling their opposition. Good to see Shaw pick himself straight up after that bump too!
Taz's kicking is clearly dodgy - we seemed to improve when he pushed further up the ground.
Rocca - you da bomb! I even felt SORRY for the 4 gamer they had stuck on him for most of the match.
Looking forward to watching us rise again next week.........(yeah bad joke i know i know )

Good game overall...
I thought we were very good early and should have easily run away with it, our midfield worked hard and delivered the ball to forwards beautifully but their efforts were not rewarded with tarrant's 3 consecutive misses from very gettable shots... and thats by anyone's standards. He really needs to do a lot of set shot work... kicking to a lead he was fine. So we didn't get the momentum early because of that and gave them a sniff... so its important to reward the hard work upfield.
We were best when tarrant was pushing up the ground, rocca in the square, lone and cara on the wing... along with thomas, lockyer, licca, holland, swan in the middle... all good speed and foot skills and that is eventually what broke the game open, our control throught the midfield and because of skillful players through the middle very, very good delivery into the 50. That basically won us the game... and will win most games if you play like that.
They pretty well had no one that was big enough to stop rocca so he pretty well did as he pleased all game... he didn't do anything special except get the ball delivered to him very, very well on 8 occasions... a lot of the cred has to go to the footskills of our mids for this. Of course he had to kick straight, and he did.
Apart from that I loved our setup... looks like collingwood is getting with the times, no room for dodgy skills in the game anymore, defender or not... you need quick, skillful players and thats exactly the majority of our mids and forwards and most of the backline.

My musings for what they are worth.........
Much like last week we played 2 good qtrs and 2 pretty poor ones. Only difference was that this week there was no Neil Craig to outfox MM.
In many ways I thought we played better last week. Just watching the replay again now and we still make a lot of skill errors.
Great to see Rocca, Fraser, Swan, Cara, Shaw, Johno, Lonie really play well. Licca, Tarks and Obree did very little.
Thomas is a ball magnet - he will be much better with more strength in his legs. Also must remember Trav Cloke is only 19 but he will be very good.
Presti is rock solid! Clement very good as well.

I rate his 2002 GF as the best game he has played for the club.loch wrote:Abba's best game by a street, not merely 'almost'. As a recent knocker, I'm delighted! Great effort Ryan, and particularly the TEN contested possessions!!BBHS wrote:Ryan Lonie's best game for the club almost.
Rocca unstoppable.
Tarrant 15 Marks with a stuffed had.
Thomas Rising Star certainty.
Cara leather poisoning off the bench.

Just finished watching it on Foxtel. I was unable to get to the game due to other commitments and I deliberately avoided any news or coverage of the game so I could watch it as if it was live.
What a second half, what a star Rocca is.
Heath Shaw was awesome considering he played yesterday.
Tarrant was great apart from his kicking for goal in the first half, set up plenty of goals in the second half.
Really stuck it up Jeffrey hehe
Can't wait for next week now.

Finally some smart moves, even though the 1st half looked really bad, the players where in the right spot and it had to blow open, with bucks and carra sweeping across back/half back and pebs one out, taz pushing up to half forward and lones/dids/swan ect around the ball in the middle it was setup nicely for once.. good game, josh fraser is a genuine start and is the diffrence, but the hawks have got nothing so i wouldnt get too excited just yet. the team is starting to click and by round 6-7 we should be in the hunt.

Couldnt just be satisfied with a solid win could you. Just had to still find a way to have a dig. Very sad.Snoop Dog wrote:Much like last week we played 2 good qtrs and 2 pretty poor ones. Only difference was that this week there was no Neil Craig to outfox MM.
The forward line really stood up today. C3 was great early and we know how good pebbles can be. Felt sorry for Tarrant early. Tarrant is actually a VERY good kick but put some goal posts in front of him and he gets the yips. He need a psychologist more than kicking practice as his kicking is fine ... its the bit between the ears that needs some work.
Looking forward to Easter Monday.

Just a thought on Dane Swans performances in both matches, MM surely had him earmarked for midfield halfback duties this year. I was impressed by him last year and although he had an interrupted pre-season hes been duly put in. Could be one of this season's suprise packets. With all the critisism the midfield got last year he looks like being one of those tireless workers we were used to seeing in 2002.

I had a cracker morning listening on the radio via internet (5am start here), unfortunately you can't seem to get ABC radio via the net and i had to endure mr walls talking down our victory from the time we got on top of hawthorn till the end. he seemed to be of the opinion that the only reason that we won was because of the way the hawks matched up on our talls. He said nothing to praise the midfield delivery and just went on about it constantly. Luckily shaw and rex were alright and gave me a pretty good idea of how the match was going. I was almost in despair early in the third thinking that if we can't beat the hawks we are screwed but then the midfield and the roc came alive and it was game over. That winning feeling is the best!Nutmeg wrote:Was relegated to listening on the radio today - I do enjoy Drew Morphett's commentary, he's so biased, I feel like I'm really at the game!
Interestingly, it seems that our boys when playing well play a very attractive brand of footy, not the possession play of port or freo or even adelaide, the dour sydney, or the boring others. If we can keep this up, I think we will win fans with our big forwards, our flashy forwards, our solid defence, and our tough midfield. Basically what people liked about us in 02/03 but with more goals and a touch more class. Keep it up pies!
McRae for Governor-General!
