Ease up on Richards

Post by uey »

I cant believe im the only one with anything positive to say about Guy Richards.
The guy has played bugger all footy for quite a while and came up against two very good ruckmen today and he not only took it up to them but got on top of them in the last quarter.
If anyone wants to put it on the line right here and now that he is not in our best 22 fully fit, then go for it. Lets see it. Someone tell us all he will be playing games for Willy.
Todays highlight was how he went!! His value to Collingwood can be enormous.

Good to see Tarrant look interested this week. The performence as a whole was above par.Got smashed in the ruck which didnt give as 1st crack at the ball.Midfield is a BIG problem and Dockers players seem to get to the fall of the ball better.Need harder players to hit the ball at pace at stopages like Leon.to many flat footed.I know Bucks and Burns have to come back in but neither can play full games in the middle anymore.

Postives kept in the game without a winner on the ground,Thomas what a hard worker and have to groom him to play midfield(at Willi) Stanley looked composed Leon another great game in Perth against Freo.I think he might wont to go home by the way he plays at Subi.

ok b4 a ball was kicked in a match. sum ppl were building taz up as in saying he is huge. he is no different then last year. i reckon he lost his pace. the only highlight was that goal he kicked on the boundry when h.shaw kept the ball in a kicked along the gorund to taz. his marking is down and not giving 80% yet.

i reckon swan did realy well and thomas did pretty good for. took a good mark and a good goal.

o'brein could be our next mal michael. he is huge and all. put him on the senoir list.

pretty good overall

A great effort by our young guys. Once MM decided to rest Pebbles I knew we were never going to win this game, so I was more than pleased that we were so competitive. The signs are really good for this year. My only disappointment was that Didak and Brodie were unusually quiet.

Quite a good strong physical game, and I think we came out looking much better than the Dorkers, considering the relative strengths of both squads playing.
I think we as supporters only ask that the players who wear the jumper give everything they have when they take the field, and I think that was the case last night - a good hitout again, with only Licca's ankle to be concerned about.

...and it is a huge part of Josh's return to great form. Josh is so relaxed out there because Guy is carrying a large part of the load that Josh had in 04 and Flaps in 05.

From what I saw of the game last night,I recon that the guys put up a GREAT fight especially in the heat and I believe that they gave the Dorks a bloody big fright.
I recon that they...the Dorks expected an easy game, that they were suprised with the tenacity and the PIES and that wehn the got behind that the panic set in and that the DORKS just wanted to show how 'superior 'they are/were and the young guns showed that they aint gonna be pushovers this year.
The PIES didnt lose and the DORKS didnt win,it was a matter of who could stand the heat the best and the DORKS just catered for it slighly better.
I was proud of the way they performed last night and I recon that the prediction for 10th place is along way off the mark.........

Interesting game, we did fine going down by less than 20 points and I ask the question, Could we make any more errors?

D4P, our ruckmen were slaughtered last night. No physical pressure on their big fella whatsoever. Josh & Guy jumped too early at every contest leaving us under pressure in the centre every time. The good sign is we were clearing the ball from the centre.

Yeh Tess, Stanners, O'Brian, Heath, Thomas, et all got a lot of game time, MM seemed to be resting Dids and Holland a fair bit.

Just to elaborate on my last post;

I thought Leon looked good through the middle in the last quater especially, but also looked very good up forward, he is coming along nicely this preseason and I think that he and Didak will do what is needed to provide a rotation option alowing Licca, O'Bree, Burns and Bucks time to rest up forward.

I thiught Stanley looked very good, good evasive skills, good work rate, took marks, laid tackles, his disposal by foot was sometimes rushed but he will improve that with experience.

Thomas also looks classy, amazing mark and goal up forward and also some excellent delivery to Davis and Taz at times during the game suggest to me that he will very quickly be another option for the forward pocket/midfield rotation, although I hope MM uses him sparingly in his first year (although if he demnds a spot with his performances then what can you do?! :) )

Someone posted earlier that we needed someone to step up in the rucking duties to free Fraser to spend more time up forward and I agree, his skills around his knees are fantastic for a big man, he is mobile, can take a mark, and can kick goals, he is our third tall forward along with Rocca and Tarrant.

Hall was a dissapointment, but he is still a teenager, and I think he was there mostly because MM was unsure if Guy could run out the game, and also of course because we where resting Cam and Pebbles, he should be sent back down to Willie with the knowlage that he must no spend the year developing into a player who can win possesion of the ball.

Speaking of Talls, my impression is that we need all three Clokes in the 22. I think that Jason is picking himself at the moment with his ferocious tackling and marathon running, but he also provides relief for an aging body like Wakelin, I think he will be indispensible this year. His brothers are an interesting point too, I thought for much of last year that we had found a new CHF in Travis Cloke and now we could let Pebs see out his career at FF, but I am now reconsidering my position. My impression from the Freo game was that Trav is still not physically intimidating enough to consistantly hold down a key position, I think that Cam may be closer to it, and also I think because of Cams lesser mobility it makes more sense to anchor Cam to CHF and alow Trav to roam a bit as he is handy below his knees and provides a good marking target.

As I see it, we are desperate for Richards to play out a full season, Travis Cloke is a utility and will be incredibly difficult to match up on, Cam will (I hope) be groomed as our pack crashing CHF but Fraser, Rocca and Tarrant will all provide targets up forward too.

Bucks, Burns, Licca and O'Bree are in our starting 18, Didak and Davis are our best forward pockets and provide midfield rotation options, after them Holland, Rhyce and Johno are probably our 'second tier'. Looking at team makeup going into the seaon proper I would have to say that some of these guys are under real pressure. Thomas looks very likely, I am certain that barring injury he will play half a dozen games at least, and if he starts winning games for us it will be very hard to drop him. Stanley looks very good, and Davies can get his own ball too, then theres Rowe who is off the radar now with injury but could be back pressing for selection (along with Rhyce) in the early rounds. Dane Swan can also go into the middle and win the ball. My point is that while people bemoan our midfield they perhaps don't realise the potential bubbling under the surface, by the end of the year our midfield could be a very different beast to what we saw last year.

Other thoughts on the game: Heath Shaw might be a bit further off than I thought, once you cut down the bench to four you can only have so many back pockets and Lockyer and Swan seem to have those positions stitched up at the moment, Lockyers performance on Farmer notwithstandig.

O'Brian looks mean! arms like a gorrila! not as tall as Michaels but probably more mobile around the contest, love the look of him, hope I don't see him in Collingwood colors this year.

It is all very, very exciting! at the moment I think our best 22 looks someting like this:

Clement Presti Lockyer
Swan Wakelin Maxwell

Buckley Holland Burns

Tarrant C.Cloke Davis
Didak Rocca Fraser

Richards Licca O'Bree

J.Cloke (must be in the 22)
T.Cloke (must be in the 22)
Caracella/Egan/Davies/Stanley (flanker types, 2 offensive, 2 defensive, who do you pick?)
Thomas/R.Shaw/Johnson/H.Shaw (onballers/pockets who do you pick?)

and what about Morrison? in between hieght, can play across half back or on ball...

and Lonie, tackles hard, and is a deadly accurate long kick, one trick pony, or starting 22?...

and what about Rowe when he gets fit?, and Pendlebury? and Rusling?

... anyway, you get the idea, we haven't had this kind of depth for a long time, fingers crossed we stay injury free and can play people to provide specific matchups and to keep others fresh, then I think we will make the eight, and from there who knows!?!

Understand. But I was actually happy with that and I would not use the word slaughtered. Tarks had 5 kicked on him, but even he wasn't slaughtered. Tough assignment for two new comers (Josh and Guy) and I thought they did enough to warrant some merit.
