Really excited about Didak in the middle. We look a different side when he is in the play - tap ons, tackles, speed over 20m, little kicks off the ground, spinning, twisting, turning, breaking free and then the ability to pass accurately under pressure. The difference was immediately noticed when he came off for an extended spell. Davis and Johnno were only serviceable and Licca and Dutch were tireless, O'B gets the ball alot but is less effective because of delivery. I swear, I saw StK players peel off him rather than tackle, actually letting him kick! Do they know something?
When Dids came back he immediately took the initiative back and they lifted in the middle. The shift was tangible. The boys around the stoppages were less predictable, more flair. Hayes, Del Santo were that little more hesitant and defensive minded in those last hectic minutes. Add Buckley, Burns and we will have a more than servicable midfield, nothing great but able to do the right things at the right times. Didak is the midfield key for a successful 2006!!

One thing I will say about J. Clo's game: as good as it was, he has always played his best footy when allowed to roam across HBF and the backline as a loose defender. Most clubs worked this out and simply put another man into their forward line, making that man a go to player and forcing Jase to try and man up (a weakness in his game man-on-man).

Last night Thomas was happy to match our loose defender with a loose defender of his own and it backfired to some extent -not too many coaches will do the same.

Still, think he's got himself in great nick and it was an outstanding effort last night so here is hoping he can go on from that performance to have a great season.

Very very good post. I actually thought he was playing on the ball at certain stages, which removed the problem of him not manning up. Maybe thats what should be done more often.

The most pleasing aspect for me....

- We won;
- We rediscovered some passion and commitment;
- We were missing Bucks, Clement, Burns, & Wakes from our best 18;
- We didn't play R & H Shaw, Rowe or Rusling who arguably would be in our best 22.

For the season proper, we go from 24 back to 22 players, all of which means that we have some genuine depth developing at the club.

I'm really optimistic on our chances of making the 8.

I managed to listen to the game while driving back from NSW. Got home just in time to turn on the foxtel for the extra time. So damn tired I could barely comprehend wtf was going on.

The main thing that filtered thru from the radio commentary, apart from any individual efforts, was the intensity.

It appeared as though the intensity we had during 02/03 was back.

The intensity we had in 02/03 was worth an extra player on the field to us. When we play that way, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

I know it's only 1 game in preseason but it's a great sign for the season ahead.

well considering our pre-season in 2003 which was great, and then our poor efforts in 2004 and 2005, it may be a good sign that we won.

I was thinking that earlier too, but Carlton pre season 2005 comes to mind. We really can't read too much into it yet.

Although we dawdled in the 2rd and 3th quarter, there was plenty to like in game. especially the first quarter. the biggest difference in our game play was we played long and direct. sure we need refine our decision making and disposals but its better than the way we played in 05. it was also great to be on the other side of close game for once. i'm sure the boys would have been sick of honourable losses and that showed in their comeback in the 4th quarter and extra time.

it was great to see the ball being continuously moved by the boys even when it spilt, there was someone to sweep it up and repel it back. i thought the umpiring was a little ordinary after the first half but you get that i guess.

JC was amazing. good to see him proving his point and being rewarded. if only tex and mumbles could do that. licca at his usual best and special mention goes to cheesy and brodes. and i actually thought lonie had a solid game compared to previous showings.

i can keep going on forever but in short, i feel good times ahead!! Now to find a pub that will air the next round!!

Twas the first game of the year....I was glad to see the commitment towards the ball.The guys seems to drop their bundle in the 3rd Q,but to their credit,they came back and fought to the end....I am still wanting to know why Gerig got the free for,or was it just to let the St. win.....
Its history now,WE WON and hopefully its the start of a great 2006

I know he's everyone's wipping boy, but i thought it was one of O'Bree's best games. He actually looks like he's beefed up in the gym, and has added a bit of pace. My major disappointment was johnno - I'm a big fan of his, and i know he had a horrible season last year with injuries, but he's going to have to step up if he's to hold his place in the side.
