Flares....they caught fire....vs Essendon, Queen's Birthday - Des Tuddenham's return to Victoria Park game (as a Don) - packed out crowd? Circa 1971/1972.

Well they had floggers in the cheer squad during the 1979 granny replayed on ABC 2 so I think they must have been banned after 1971/1972....

One was set on fire during a game at Vic park but I thought it was like 1980...

Cheers

Tess....you can't answer this one.

edit: Floggers are the big streamers that Cheersquads struggle with waving up and down when their team gets a goal
Thats NOT fair...but sooooo typical. When I know the answer I'm not allowed to answer. Just like when I was a kid hey sis.
When we had to let you play with us then the ball would hit you and you would run home crying....yes I rememeber!

Where do you get you info Luke?????

I really thought this one would be around for a while.

Yes you are completely right as always.

1972 Queens birthday weekend game some Essenscum cheersquad member ran through our Race (Run Through) and broke it before our players came out. Then during the game an Essenscum supporter flicked a cigarette in the Collingwood Outer Cheer Squad's floggers, which set them on fire. Can't really remember a flare, but there has been a lot of champagne sipped since then.

Such was the uproar that they banned floggers just about immediately, couldn't even have those cute little pom poms.

When the return game happened at Windy hill later that year, the night before some bright spark (NOT) sent a call out that Windy Hills stands were going to be burnt down. Probably an Essenscum supporter.

What a night that was, I saw Billy Thorpe at the Essendon Town Hall, my first big time live band!

Ok then, over to you J26.

Really? Not a bad claim to fame.

New question: Who did Collingwood trade in order to recieve Shannon Gibson, in the trade period of 1997?
