Both. We have serious deficiencies in the skills department and it cost us today. Having said that the umpiring was an absolute disgrace which cost us at least four goals. Take that into account and the result is a bit different.

Well done to the team for their effort but if the lack of skills aren't addressed over Summer then we can look forward to at least one more year down the bottom of the ladder.

BTW, as much as I like Chris Egan and think he will be a player he needs to work on his defensive skills at Willi for a while. Every mistake he made today cost us a goal. Bring him back when he toughens up.

The umpiring was absolutley shocking and Tarrant was held all day for no reward. The roar when he finally got a free kick was absolutely spine tingling.

I thought O'bree was good got plenty of kicks in the packs. Some people don't rate him but you need players like him to get the ball moving in your direction.

Wakelin was great as was Licuria, Bucks tried his heart out but I think he must have left his kicking boots at home as he missed a few targets and set shots that he would normally have eaten for breakfeast.

I thought Lockyer, Swan, O'brien, Shaw, Jason Cloke were all serviceable.

Quiet or just shocking were Carracella, Davis, Fanning, T Cloke and Egan. The last one might be a bit controversial but his kicking really lets him down and understandably I suppose with such a skinny body he shirks some contests. Where was Burns in the first quarter, I thought he wasn't too bad in the second half?

Bad luck to Lonie and I wish him luck in recovering. Will he be on our list next year? I wouldn't say he was a certainty.

Kids are starting to tire and the end of season can't come quick enough. We are still a chance to claim the spoon with the Blues winning today so it will be a big game in 2 weeks.

Judging from second half.

Still cracks me up a little seeing Jase in the ruck. Yeah Egan jumps around too much, and was clanging it up a bit.

Tarrant felt sorry for him this much. Was good to see him kick a few though.

Licuria pulled a Del Santo.

Heath Shaw looks cool, hope he stays in.

Oh yeah Lonie out for season as well. Cool.

I'll say a couple of things at this early stage. Jason Cloke tried very hard when he was on, particularly in the second half when he was thrown into the ruck. He did very well for a bloke his size. Fanning needs more time at Williamstown, he is a long way from ready to play in the big league.

I was frustrated with our inability to take advantage of the momentum each time it swung our way....oh, and the over disposal when Holland was running forward with only a minute or two to go was shocking. Tugger should have a shot, I think.

Taz was quiet, but he gets held onto every week, and the bloke is getting to the point when he is getting so fustrated that he becomes disheartened (sp?). If there was more time in the last quarter, I think that he could've kicked another goal or two. He was starting to fire. When he finally got a free in the last, I thought it was a miracle. The umpires should be ashamed of the way he is treated.

Harry O'Brien tried hard, but I think he shouldn't have been on Medhurst. Especially when Medhurst fired in the first quarter....why would you then move a first gamer onto him? At one stage, MM also moved Presti onto Pavlich for some reason. Who knows why, because Clement was doing a good job. Pav was just too mobile for Presti.

Bucks was good early, but wasn't as influential later in the game, although he still got a fair bit of it. O'Bree was average. Egan showed a bit, but some of his mistakes were costly.

...oh and LICA!!!! What a champ, kicked four goals, and never stopped trying. Good effort mate. That'll do for now.

Gutsy effort considering. Shite umpiring. Taz mauled and unrewarded, but fighting effort. Carra a worry, injured? probably, but shouldnt be out there. Fanning, tries...but not there. Maxwell , Swan and Egan, bright futures. Backline, as always solid. Special mention to Wakes today, best for us by far. Lucuria and Bucks great. Others had cameos. J.Cloke tried hard, did some good things but a worry that he "falls" down too easy(picked up by umps and heard so on microphone). Leon, only flashes. Lonie, stiff (typical), thought he was back on track,Future ??Hope he stays. Young Harry, welcome to the big time, did ok for first up (looked stuffed). Woey, Tarks and Cheesey were ok. Holland was poor early, but picked up. Travis got better as the game wore on, always looked threatening, but unfortunately didnt really deliver.
Overall not all that bad, very stiff, especially early with the umpires. Mostly upsetting that we couldnt win it for Bucks...roll on 06.
Enjoy yourself. Its later than you think!

I thought one of the main turing points in the match is when Woewodin had the free kick on the wing and took an eternity to kick it. When he did he kicked it straight to a Freo player.

I didn't think the umpiring was that bad...

The umpiring was plain and simple CHEATING.

I normally don't crusify umpires as I appreciate that it is a difficult job, but today the maggots cost us a game on Buckley's 250th.

How can fanning keep giving away free kicks in the middle if he is the one that jumps at the ball. I thought you werent allowed to wrestle in the middle bounce ala McKee.

Plain and simple we lost that game because of the worst umpiring I have ever seen.

P.S. I liked C1's game today. Hope he can cement his place in the team, played well.

Today was a fantastic result........if you think coming within 7pts with one hand behind your back (read umpires did the tying).

Just saw MM's press conference and he was scathing to umps. Fine is on the way for sure. Did not miss a mark. (will post seperate comments)

Re the game - they had a real go. You could see blokes like Woey, Lockyer, Obree, Lica etc were playing for their careers bc they were as desperate as I have ever seen. Each played well albeit Woey made some bad errors in the last. His long kick to goal when he ignored short option was real selfish.

Presti was sensational on McPharlin as was Wakelin on Polak.

I was pretty happy with the effort of the young blokes - Obrien was good until he had to mark Medhurst. Even then he was ok - just got a little lost.

Clement was ordinary today. Pavlich tore him up and his effort in the last when Pav smothered his kick and then he had the opp to smother Pav's kick was awful. His first half was a shocker - Pav just lost him and was able to get free pretty easily.

Fanning is going to struggle in my book. I think he is slow and sloppy. To many frees against him for me.... Caracella is also awful - he is playing for the salary not the jumper.

Egan - I defended this kid a few weeks ago. Unfortunately I was wrong - he shits himself in a tough contest! His skill is also v ordinary. Gets plenty though.

Pity about Lonie - had kept Medhurst v quiet.

Thought Jason C was good today. we kicked goals when he was rucking. Trav ok to but needs to improve kicking.

Best for me: Wakelin, Presti, Buckley, Holland, Lockyer, Obree, Licuria

People comment about Tazz not being passionate enough about the game BUT when he is scragged and held EVERY week, with the umpires literally turning a blind eye and showing OBVIOUS bias against him, who can blame him for being p***** off!

If any umpire can sit and watch a replay of today's game and not be embarrased by the number of free's Tazz was NOT paid - then they should be sacked on the spot.

It may not have changed the result of the game but the way Tarrant is treated on the field is a joke.

When Caracella is bad he is REALLY bad. He has been absolutely rubbish lately and cannot possibly retain a spot in the team on his current form.

It seems like Malthouse doesn't want to win. He keeps Broadie on the bench most of the first half for unknown reasons. Broadie kills em in the 2nd half. Burns was also on the bench a lot - he was playing really well in the 3rd quarter and for some reason started the last quarter on the bench - he can't have been tired he hadn't had much game time.

I liked Egan's gam, he keeps getting the ball, he obviously has some flaws on his defensive side and disposal as well but he is an 18-year-old kid in his first season of AFL. Give him some support he is doing really well.

Good debut by O'Brien as well - killed Headland for most of the game and then did alright on Medhurt when Lonie got injured.
