Groundhog year

Post by perthmagpie »

This is 2004 again. Can't make the finals, lose interest and look slow and lazy. Tarrant's body language was terrible. Kicking below AFL standard (whats new?). We can expect another tough year next year without wholesale changes to coaching staff/assistants that prove to be successful. Travis needs a rest. Very sad for the supporters that the players can't find a reason to go in, now the finals are out of reach.

Our barometer is our tackle count and against Ess , Bris and Melb it was way down and we were thrashed as usual. My passion for watching my team for the remainder of the year is now gone, because the team's passion is clearly gone.

Absolutely right, Perthmagpie. Half way through the third quarter I was asking myself Where's the fire I saw against West Coast, Geelong, Hawthorn and more recently, Port Adelaide? Tarrant has been bugging me for weeks -actually. make that months - and hearing that he used to barrack for Geelong makes me wonder if he wouldn't rather be mixing it with Ablett, Ottens et. al. at Skilled Stadium. Part of the problem has to be the fact that he seems to prefer playing further up the ground, on a wing or half forward flank. Week after week his inaccuracy as a FF is hurting us. Yet when running along a wing he seems to hit targets more often that not. Someone said try him at CHB. Can't hurt. He can mark and he is a big kick if not a very accurate one inside 50.
Caracella - geez, the guy has managed at least one goal every game so far, two lots of five goals, and is among our leading goalkickers for the season, and probably right up there with goal assists as well, has a couple of lacklustre games and according to some of you is ripe for the scrap heap. Put him at FF and see how he goes.
Buckley - Bloody legend. Rest TC and put Bucks at CHF, i guarantee you, we'll get another three years out of him.
Lonie is suffering from the same problem as Taz in my view. He is stuck in a defending role he clearly resents and can't race up a wing or out of the midfield and slam the ball 50, 60 metres the way he would like to. Put him on a wing or in the centre, put some faith in him and he'll thank us. A few people in here might say he's soft but i've seen him lay some pretty good tackles in the past, and dive in for a second, and third effort at the ball, and his job on Brad Green wasn't bad despite not loving a defensive role. There is no way I would trade, delist or otherwise drop this guy. He's got a fifty metre kick that could totally bite us in the arse if he plays for anyone else.
As for Jason Cloke, yes he is a whinger but if he is indeed being ignored despite making BOG continually at Willy, you have to ask, does MM have it in for him? Okay, Woey is suffering in silence but his form even before Anzac Day was pretty bad. He's just having a crap year. They all have at least one.
Finally I would just like to say that i agree with whoever made that point about us giving up our spiritual home in Vic Park. Things were, if not better, more honest, and blue collar like our roots than spiffy Lexus Centre. Don't get me wrong, Eddie's done some good things over the last six years or so and without him i doubt if we would have reached the GF twice in a row in '02 and '03, but he's made things more about money and prestige than winning the game. And he's given MM far, far too much hiring and firing power. What the hell happened with TD, for instance? And Scotty Cummings as forwards coach - I'd rather have Alistair Lynch. Hate the guy with a passion but he knew how to kick a football.
Congrats Bucks, on a great return! Bring on the Crows!

On another matter.. maybe we need an assistant coach cleanup more than a player one. One of the main reasons we were so good in 2002 was because of one of Mick's West Coast mates, Dean Laidley.

Leave Gotch as Willi coach perhaps, but remove him as an assistant.

If our assistants are: McKenna, Brown, Gotch, Fletcher then..

I think Brown needs to go and get a real job, sorry Rowdy, it's time, Fletcher can go and so can Gotch. I know some people will disagree, but I would keep McKenna as I see his style emerging in Maxwell, and in the relative composure of the backline.

Out: Brown, Fletcher, Gotch
In: Crosisca (forwards), Misiti (mids) and Ayres (put him in with MM)
Agree with what you have said Cam, but how about Mick McGuane and Mark Bickley - or even Gary O'Donnell? I'd also keep Adrian Fletcher.

Wouldn't fletcher be working with our current midfield though? I never said O'Donnell because he will never leave Essendon now. Bickley is probably not interested in coaching but he'd be fantastic, prefer Crosisca over McGuane, but hey we do need significant changes, which would have been right on the cards HAD we been struggling without injuries. The injuries provide the murky cloud of greyness that covers our performances, like it or not.
Get back on top.

He would be you are right. However, Harvey will be Essendon's next coach. O'Donnell has to be targeted. Get back TD - who was the main factor in tazza's brilliant 2003. What else can we do?

Friday nights debacle was very dissapointing as every one has mentioned but it is now soooooooooooo obvious that Leon Davis must be not just delisted but sacked. I think he is the softest Collingwood player in the last 20 years and he has to go pay him out and piss him off. Talk about Tarrant not interested Davis is,was and has always been a rotten front runner. Though to be fair he is not the only one, others that should also go in my opinion
Cole
Williams
Lonie.
Severe reprimand and on warning
Johnson
Caracella
Fanning
Tarrant. Just for his attitude.
Play the youth of the club and clean out the coaching side keep Mckenna and sack the rest including Balme. There was talk of Robert Shaw coming out of contract we could do a lot worse than to sit him with Malthouse.
Oh well as long as we can beat Carlton again the year will not be a total waste!!!!
Go the Mighty Woodsmen!!!!

Brett, what did Fanning do wrong? He was very important and played his best game int erms of marks across the ground, if you ask me.

Id give cole one more game, he did some really hard things and spent a lot of time off the field. When he came on he laid a good bump and put his head over the ball several times. He also laid off the handball which led to egans goal before half time. He deserves one more match.

He did do the hard things, but just wasn't up to scratch. One more week maybe. That is it. Trade bait I think. We'd have to have been pretty surprised with the lack of performance from Cole this year, gievn his placing in the Copeland last season.

its time for hard calls its not just this year but the last two.

I will pose this question;-

Will Cole, Davis, King, Williams, Woey, Loken Morrison lead us into the future

Do we need to keep O'Bree, Tarks, Lonie for stability.

Do we need to keep Wakes, Presti Burns until they retire

The answer for the last 2 is yes.

We need to get rid of the first lot which is 7 and enough, I don't care if we trade or delist.

We need to play Tarrant not at FF, we need Lonie at wing, we need Bucks up forward etc etc.

Tried hard:
Holland, Clement, Presti (didnt say did well but actually tried hard), Licuria

The rest of you, hang your heads in shame.

As much as I am pissed off with the decision making and disposal, that pales into insignificance compared to the desgracful act of not putting your body on the line which occurred MULTIPLE times last night.

I can't kick well, I'm not fast, I can't take a pack mark, but I am prepared to go in hard for the ball!!!! I don't care if you are a first year player or a 10 year player ... if you aren't prepared to go in hard then PISS OFF
I totally agree with u .... a loss wont hurt so much if they actually tried.....if I were one of the boys that night (bar the obvious tried hard players), i'd at least show some integrity and refuse to take my pay-check for the night.....

and Bucks...i feel sorry for you...you do not deserve to witness such a performance by your team mates.....i am now at the point that if Bucks can win a premiership with another team before he retires, then so be it.....even if losing Bucks willl kill me (and our club).....but he's just too good a player (both skills and heart) and he deserves the one thing he thrives for all his career.....

carcarly, re: your comment about Bux. I was thinking along the same lines during the third quarter. The one thing that Bux desires is to win a premiership at Collingwood, but if a premiership medallion is all that he wants, maybe he'd be better off looking elsewhere.

Wonder if he would enjoy living in Perth? I'd trade him for Dean Cox and a 1st or 2nd round draft pick in a flash.

Given Buckleys age there's no way a trade is going to happen. Let's just do our best to try and give him a premiership here.
