First of all, I think that we need to acknowledge that this is a different side to the 01-04. There are a lot of young players in the Brisbane side who I believe can be tested out in tough and physical contests. I have in mind Drummond, Merrett, McLaren, Sherwood and Selwood. Some of the tough men from Brisbane are out or gone (Scott, Pike, Copeland, Lynch)

Naturally, the Brisbane senior players will rally to their support and might just take their eyes off the ball.

For me the team that wants the win the most, and is prepared to do whatever is necessary to win, will take the points. Always is, always will be.

The way I see it.

- Caracella to lose his head (quite probably in a literal sense) after being tackled by any one of their backmen.

- Alastair Lynch to jump over the fence and king hit Wakelin from behind, the AFL in turn suspending Wakelin for ten weeks for intimidating a spectator. We appeal and it turns into a life-long ban.

- Mal Michael to look smug after the win making me throw various things at the TV screaming out what a hack he is and how great it must be to be able to sit back and enjoy the ride of a once great team.

- Us to lose by a lot, then to have to read five hundred posts on how Mick's lost it, how Player X should be traded\delisted\retired, five hundred posts on defending Mick, defending Player X. And maybe ten posts on how bad the umpiring was.

With all that said, I hope to any deity for us to win somehow in spectacular fashion...like...lightning striking each Brisbane player...twice...and for us to win by default.

Here's hoping!

Brisbane can't deliver three rapings in a row could they?

Play Bucks all game, send him down forward. Send Woey down forward also.
I'm worried about centre bounces, Keating will smash it forward and they will run onto it.

Match Preview:

Round 15 proves to be another season defining match for the Collingwood and Brisbane football clubs in the match of the round clash at the Gabba saturday night. A win to collingwood keeps the dream of finals well and truly alive and a win to Brisbane cements them well and truly in the 8. 3 months ago, neither team looked likely of challenging for a top 8 position. Now the fate of all clubs rest with the form of these two proud clubs. This match will help shape the 8 as teams like St.Kilda, Pt. Adelaide, Richmond, Kangaroos, Geelong, Fremantle and Western Bulldogs are all fighting for the final positions in the 8.

Collingwood will be full of confidence after knocking off reigning premiers Port Adelaide, whilst Brisbane look back to their best after a humiliation of premiership contenders Melbourne.

Brisbane provide a very different opposition to Port Adelaide. Port rely on free run and attack and do not like in and under contests. On the other hand, Brisbane welcome physical contests with players such as Voss, Akermanis, Power and Black all working hard at the bottom of packs. They also have a better defense and an equally dangerous attack with Jonathon Brown in career best form. The inclusion of youngstars like Drummond, Selwood, Sherman and Corrie has also added depth to a side which has been criticised as ageing. There is no doubt that Collingwood matched up better against Port than they do against Brisbane.

This match however provides the opportunity for Collingwood to prove critics wrong. The win against the power was not convincing as Port were far from impressive. A win against Brisbane at the Gabba at full strength would go far to defy critics and create a launching pad to change the destiny of 2005.

It seems a curse that everytime Collingwood faces Brisbane, the tribunal goes a long way to hampering our chances. After Cloke and Rocca have been ruled out of Grand Finals against Brisbane, this year the in form Alan Didak has been rubbed out. A vital cog in the magpies attack is missing and much of the burden now falls on Tarrant and Caracella to kick the bulk of the goals. Collingwood must find other targets.

At the selection table, Collingwood will be faced with the decision of bringing in Leon Davis as a forward or adding midfielders such as Woewoedin, Morrison, Iaccobucci or Cole. After an impressive game in the reserves, Woewoedin seems likely but with the suspension of Didak, Davis seems a sensible option to provide agility to our forward line. If Chad Morrison is fit, he may provide a big steady body to our midfield to deal with the likes of Jonathon Brown.

As has been the case for most teams this year, much of the focus will rest on who will take Jonathon Brown. The likely choice seems the ever reliable Simon Prestigiacomo. However, with Daniel Bradshaw coming off a 9 goal game, Presti may be used at full back which seems the sensible option to me. Prestigiacomo prefers to play in defence and oftens seems out of place if he is forced up the ground. However Malthouse has entrusted Prestigiacomo with all the key roles this year and may again look to him to take the best centre half forward in the game at the moment.

The other option is James Clement who is also in career best form. Clement will prefer it up the ground and has more versatility. Clement also has been entrusted with key roles, but rarely with key big men. The magpie defender has played on small forwards or 2nd string forwards. Will Malthouse throw the gauntlett down to the champion? Prestigiacomo will be better in one on one contests in the forward line, however clement will be more versatile if Brown elects to play in the middle. Im assuming Malthouse will rotate depending on where Brown is playing. Clement in the middle also adds penetration and accurate kicking to a midfield which has been criticised for poor footskills.

In the past few rounds, the collingwood midfield has looked more dangerous with the inclusions of Buckley and Lonie and the increasing fitness of Alan Didak. All 3 are hitting targets and racking up good stats. However Didak is out this week and Buckley will again only play 75% of the game. Licuria is struggling with groin troubles and Burns will also spend a lot of time on the bench. On the othe hand, Voss and Nigel Lappin will also spend large amounts of time on the bench. Collingwood may again look to play defensively through the centre and rely on quality tagging jobs from players like Holland and Licuria.

Match-ups could be:
Burns vs Voss
Holland vs Black
Licuria vs Akermanis
Lockyer vs Power
Buckley vs Selwood ( selwood has beaten players like Stevens and Ablett in recent rounds and may be entrusted with the key tagging role)
Lonie head to head with Notting (2 big kicks, Lonie has better aerial skills and is more accountable)
In the magpie forward line, Michael and Leppitch will struggle to contain Tarrant, Travis Cloke and Rusling on the lead. They are slow and will be convincingly beaten. However, one on one, none of the Collingwood forwards look strong enough to win a contest. Cameron Cloke is important. He must provide a strong body with the ability of winning a contested mark. In recent round Cam has looked promising and has been competitive. However, last round in a one on one contest with Tredrea, he was beaten far too easily. Cameron must use his body effectively and throw his weight around. He must not stand down if he finds himself in a contest with Brown or even up and coming forward Merrett. Travis, Rusling and Tarrant will undoubtadly rotate the forward line and Caracella will be hard to match up on. However we will struggle unless the midfield provides good supply to our forwards. Lonie is important. He must push forward and kick 1 or 2 long goals. He must also nail targets.

The ruck is a real worry. Keating has been good. Fanning and Cloke are faced with a real test. However Keating is no good around the ground. Therefore Cloke especially must be wise enough to assist with Jonathon Brown and also push forward to assist with Michael and Leppitch.

Collingwood is not going to win this game through individual efforts. Every player must beat their man. They must take risks and play through the corridor. They must be willing to put their body on the line. Players like Licuria, Burns and Holland will not be afraid to take on Jonathon Brown if he attempts to throw his weight around. Players like Lonie, Woewoedin, Egan, Davis, Rowe or Swan must not back away from contests either.

Match of the round will be a blinder this week. Pies by 5. If they want it, careers and season 2005 will be defined. Is the brave magpie outfit able to stop the Lion juggernault? They've stopped the Eagles, Power and Geelong run, can they be the giant beaters once more? One things for sure, i will have no nails come Sunday. Go pies!

Cara might be keen to show something against his old side. Could go either way and in a big fashion. Complete star or total bummer. Hoping for the second.

Dont believe Leon will suddenly produce something significant in his first senior game for a while especially against these guys. He would be useful but not a great influence even at his career best.

Though I'm not a great fan, I'm thinking Woey in the forward line. Great marking and kicking skills with lack of speed not a huge disability there.

Taz will continue to be a useful distraction in the forward line but not change the game with multiple missed opportunities. Being realistic I think our new kids in the way of Cloke and Ruzza will be serviceable but not be able to lead a forward line or play the career bests that we are gonna need on this one. I have concerns the physical toughness of this one might shake them a little. With Taz playing on one leg, %$^ we're missin' Rocca. We have a big problem here.

I would put Clement on Brown when he's out of the middle. There is no-one else who can keep up with his strength, pace and versatility. I know Presti has done well recently on him but Brown has now taken a mobile centre role and Presti will not cope there. I can't think of any midfielder to match him one on one in the middle but still think Burns and Licca should be quick and tough enough on ground level to win most of those battles.

The ruck is a lost cause and our midfielders will need to carry the burden.

Bucks will reliably have a blinder in the middle but will it be enough?

I honestly think C1 is needed here for a bit of toughness, height and strength in the backline. This game will be too physical for Lonie but he will be a useful benchman.

Finally I think the distraction with the tribunal issues is gonna take its toll just like 2003.

Good luck pies. We're gonna need to play our seasons best here.

I'm sorry but i'm still a tad nervous about this game, just blame it on having flash backs to the 2003 Grand Final. Thats just the way i am. I only hope the actually players don;t think like this and go out there and put on a decent showing.

GO MIGHTY MAGPIES!!!!.

I have said this once, I will say this again. Yes we must stop Aka and Brown, but the bloke we really need to keep an eye on is Simon Black.
Round 16, 2004 - 30 Possessions.
Round 3, 2004 - 23 Possessions.
Grand Final 2003 - 39 Possessions.
Qualifying Final 2003 - 26 Possessions.

Not only does he gather these possessions very quietly, but he is very damaging with them. He gets under your guard very easily because a lot of the focus is on Voss, Brown and Akermanis!

Its only the mental game that can beat us, we've shown we are the equal of any team in the league at playing football, but I still have mental problems with this one like many others here, so there's no doubt the playing group wil feel it.

I might well be at this one (been offered a ticket), and we'll need every pie supporter there to scream his/her lungs out! I dont plant to be able to talk on Sunday!

This game will determine who the 'other' best side in the league is, and if we win we WILL play finals. It will also decide who the best player in the game is, specially if Brown & Clement play on each other, forget the Brownlow, a backman can't win that silly thing, this will be the battle of the year. For some reason I thought we were a chance against WCE, Geelong and Port, but I'm having trouble seeing it here. We were a chance when they were playing poorly (athough so were we at the time), but now they are at their best (they would undoubtedly beat WCE this week), its a big big ask.

We need Woewie, Taz, (possibly Didak) and Cara to fire in the forward line, and Rus is gonna hafta decide that this is the week he realises that 1 goal is not a sufficient return for a key forward. C3 is also gona hafta decide how bad he wants to be a great player like his dad, having both his brothers should help, and C2 needs to continue the first signs of hard work he showed last week in a much improved performance. We could sure use Rhyce to counter Akershithead, but we'll have to make do with someone else, we need Cheesy, Dutchy, and Johnno to provide the run they provided last week, so cant afford to have one of them tagging the white-headed mouth. Who gets him? Maxy? Egan maybe? In the end we may have to sacrifice Johnno. Dutchy is going too well.

We simply cannot win this one, no way, no how...
