Is this just a repeat of last year?

Post by wo5 »

We were in praticaly exactly the same spot this year and had control of melbourne for most of the game and just gave it away?

Have we progressed at all? If we have why are we still in the same spot.

Now, Back to the Development Program...

Post by pietillidie »

We had a crack with the old seniors and we came up short against the best team in the competition. I suppose it shouldn't come as a great surprise, even though we hoped for more.

We will never beat a side as good as Melbourne with Licca, Burnsy, Morrison, Woewodin, O'Bree and Holland in the same team no matter what their stats. This is not to say they haven't been great players and I don't respect them as individuals, but as a combined group of midfield runners their aggregate effectiveness is no longer sufficient.

Now we can switch our focus back to development and bring youngsters in as they become physically capable (Brayden and Heath Shaw, Yakka, Egan and others), and push Dids into the middle perhaps with Tazz (and even Leon if he gets his fitness and desire up to scratch).

Then we get the fat cheque book out and sign a couple of athletic midfielders at season's end and we're on our way to next season with plenty of depth.

(Let's also hope we don't lose Rhyce for too long so he can keep maturing into a senior running player).

Go Pies!

We never really had control in this game. Melbourne are better this year then last as well. Have we progressed? As far as the young guns go, yes we have.

Very disappointing final quarter and a half of footy. Unfortunately the bad signs were there half way through the third quarter. In the end 45 points was not really a true reflection of the whole game but was a true reflection on our last quarter.
Too many times, our players were caught just watching the ball rather than actually going in and getting the hard ball! That I think and our numerous mistakes was the bottom line!

Well there you go.........

Only one thing cost us that game. Our mid's inability to hit targets all through the game. Now I am not sure whether it was our fwd structure issue or not but it LOOKED TERRIBLE!

Its the same old blokes to - Obree missed a target going fwd 4 times in the third. That stuff is heartbreaking to a fwd. To be fair to MM he pulled him off for the first 20 mins of the last.

In the end it was their pace and skill thru middle v our effort and pressure. But you can see how far we are off when you look at the two midfields.

Woey was just shit - the realisation would have hit today that his career is over. Nobody will want him. That's harsh but the opp know how to beat him now. Just put a quick bloke on him that can mark overhead. His shots on goal were awful!

To be fair - we were excellent for the first2 and a half qtrs. Our issue was that we could not put it on the board. We were harder at it and were running pretty well but we just let ourselves down with kicking.

Lockyer was magnificent, as was Burns, Didak, Presti, Maxwell and Lica. Each of these blokes were really good.

C3 was ok, Swan and Holland were good in first half, Lonie did good job on Green and particularly Miller after he cut Wakes and Clement up. Cara was also ok but like Tazz suffered from poor disposal. He also lost it in the last. T3 also tried half but clearly got tired. Shaw was v good in first half taking out Johnstone and Brown who was good when he went off.

You would not say Clement had a poor game but he was not brilliant either. His blokes played pretty well on him. He did ok on Bruce, poorly on Miller and ok on Yze.

Fraser - he is not the player he was. He should have cleaned up Bizzell and didnt. He also missed the mark! On another occasion he should have been in the hot spot when Neitz marked and goaled. Is it confidence or injury?

The other disappointing ones were Rowe (ord kick and dec making), Morrison (just does not seem to impose himself on a game), Rusling (he did not get much of a go - should have!).

Thought MM went a bit defensive in the end. Should have left Rusling on - thought he could have given the kid more of a go when the game was over - instead he left Woey on!

All in all great effort for 2 1/2 qtrs and pity we got rolled from then.

OUT - Woey, Rowe, Shaw (inj)
IN - Bucks, Egan, Johno

I dont wish to sound a pessimistic, but until we seriously start turning over the list we have, we wont improve.

The current list is not a top 6 team, and we certainly need to gain some decent draft picks and sign a Luke Power or Daniel Kerr etc.

Fact is they were too fast and too good, Woey just cannnot fit into a structure that has Lica O'bree and Burns. Same unfortunately goes for Morrison. Hope Shaw isn't too badly injured. Fraser is a shadow of himself, obviouslt the injury and infection has really drained him, as sad as it sounds I think until he regains his strenth he should only be played forward. Lonie is not accountable, if that is what he does, given a second chance then I just don't know where you go with him, I know he scored a great goal

My changes, which won't happen:-

out:- Woey, O'Bree, Lonie, Morrison Shaw(inj)

in:- Davis, Buckley, Loken, Yakka, Davies or H Shaw

I thought O'Bree was one of our best today. Certainly one of the few that could find space out of the stoppages. Cam Cloke was dreadful around the ground today, someone should introduce the word limitations to him cause he is a terrible kick, and should try and play within those. Not try and spot up someone 50m upfield on a windy day, and it doesn't hurt to occasionally have a look to see if someone from our team is in the vague vacinity of where he's going to kick it.

Holland was also good today, but in the end i think they are the best team i've seen this year. Woey should be dropped until we can't make the finals then brought back in to try and get some trade value for him at the end of the year. I'd trade him back to Melb for a tackle bag at the minute however.

Sorry if it seems a bit harsh to include O'bree as I know he has been playing ok, but coming up against Melbourne made me realise how far we have to go, Melbourne are a super side with multiple fast options.

We need speed !!!!!!

Disappointed, but I'm sticking no matter what. Very disappointing to see many Black and White scarfs and jumpers leaving during the final term. But anyway. Match Notes:

-Bucks would have been handy as a steadying midfielder/extra forward target
-Lonie...what is going on? Really? That trademark goal was what we want, but the rest of it? He went to ground, and struggled to win his own ball. Great to see that MM tried him on Brad Miller in the final term. Great learnign curve.
-Mumbles was average until junktime in the last quarter. No impact when the heat was on. Not sure how to read it.
-Cameron Cloke has footy smarts. Plays the match a little bit like basketball. Terrible temperment. Poor by foot, and gives away just too many free kicks. Time for a spell in the VFL.
-Dane Swan was in tears after the match. He thought it was his fault we lost (not right)
-Shawry - I love this bloke. The poor kid gets nothing going his way.
-Woey copped the most I've ever heard from a crowd. The Demon dirt was disgraceful. The bloke DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE YOUR CLUB! The poor fella tried his heart out, but the ball did not bounce his way (literally).
-Didak will be an AFL superstar. Skill, pace, class, cheek - this bloke has it all. Future skipper (gut feeling), and will be a running midfield prospect.
-Clemo was good. Especially on Ooze.
-O'Bree had 20 disposals. Which ones hit thier target, or were useful, or went forward? Seriously, so many needless tiny handballs.
-Rusling didn't get enough of a go.
-Fraser was supposed to be ill today. He'd better hope so.
-Liked Roweys match. Yes, he struggled in parts, but his skills were improved, and he oozes class. Inline for a Rising Star nommination.
-Presti and Wakes were quiet. Presti did alright on Neitz. Not great.
-Travis Cloke was good at CHF. Led and marked well. Interesting to see Danniher employed an extra man on him on more then one occasion. He already has a standing in the game.
-Tarrant had a shocker. Fair enough.
-Maxwell was terrific, despite what some may say. Robertson ran all over him late, but his spoiling and never-say-die attitude was heartywarming. A future club leader, but needs another pre-seaosn in the gym.

Another thing......

BURNSY - YOU ARE A LEGEND. THE HEART YOU SHOW, THE GUTS YOU PLAY WITH, THE LEADERSHIP YOU DISPLAY. YOU ARE A HERO, AND THE MOST HONEST, NEVER SAY DIE FOOTBALLER GOING AROUND.

As for Licca.

All of the above. Go Pies. Onwards an upwards.

If you ever you thought we were not missing Rocca & Buckley, today is a full dose of reality. They are second on the ladder so I am not really disapointed.

Woey needs to play a tagging role, he is not a go to player and at the moment he has no confidence at all.

Dumb football most of the day and they made us pay most of the time. Why the *uck we continue to pass to players under pressure or out numbered has me stumped.

Ah well we have a rest now.

We need to win eight of the next eleven. We don't like making it easy.
