Worst display since the gf loss to the Lions. Do we have a game plan?? Why do all our players always look for the option around the boundary line first, rather than looking to hurt the opposition with direct play through the middle. It takes us seven kicks to get it to centre half forward and then our opposition just seem to go bang-bang and into forward 50.
I am normally a glass half-full man but couldn't see much to be enthused about today.
Fair enough Shaw had 32 possessions and was OK but he got them in lots of four (it went like: Shaw to Licca back to shaw to jonno to shaw to someone to shaw to another one to shaw and then STOP!! wait for the Bombers to flood back and block off any possible options ... farcical)
I also think the rival players are instructed to not worry too much about how many possessions he has because he doesn't hurt them.
Still, in saying that, if half our players had a fair dinkum go like he did, we would have won by plenty.

Disappointing: Cole, O'Bree, Williams (he may be the fittest bloke at the club but he seems to go up and down on the one spot), Walker, C Cloke (young opponent gave him a bath).... oh, i have had enough!

Quite a lot of them need to show something next week...

Oh my god how does Williams get a game? Friggin disgraceful when you've got talent like Rowe sitting on the bench for 60% of the game. We were totally overawed in the air, I don't remember seeing one contested mark going forward all day as Tazza was generally in front possie when he took his marks.

Players who need a rocket

Tarks - second bad game in a row, looks soft in contests.
Woewoedin - disgraceful, show some passion.
Williams- piss off
C2 - see you in Willi when richards and fraser get back
Tex - Ditto
Cole - kick it when you have time don't friggin hand pass to a guy who has
no idea the ball is coming to him.
Carra - go back to Essendon if you are going to play like that
Taz - kick straight when we have the momentum next time

Players who played well

Shaw - well done but you should have kept playing son
C3 - good debut gave us a contest at CHF
Rowe - played well when on the ground
Presti - unlucky to have a goal kicked on you, you made Lloyd look seriously tragic today.

The rest were servicable.

I reckon we'll bounce back next week, but I'm sick of going down to this Bomber fags twice a year. We look a shadow of the team without Rocca unfortunately and it looks like being a long season.

I think people are being a little harsh on Woewodin. He's playing average but he's still a decent user of the ball and he tries hard. Having said that, we do need more pace in the midfield. Johnson and Shaw are our only runners.

I'd rather have C1 (yes, I know!) or Lokan on the forward line than Williams. At least both of them will put their head over the ball. Time for King & Yacca to come in for O'Bree & Woey, they are useless.

Walker cannot play in the Ruck. I'd rather see Fanning in the ruck than Walker.

Presti had a great game. Probably the in form full back in the league at the moment.
Agree with everything you said Doc. Willo was horrible, Woey average, and O'Bree flittered in and out of the play. Not enough - but better then the other two. C1 should be in, as should Yakka and Ruzza. Tex is not a ruckman like you said.

Agree with Presti - he murdered Lloyd today. One luck goal. Brilliant effort Presti. 2 votes to you.

The side overall is just not clicking. The players definitely look disinterested.

Cole - has no composure and to be honest no idea. You guys must be seeing something I am missing. Would request he gets fit enough to try in the middle or has no place in the side.

C Cloke - is awefully slow. Will he get any quicker?

Williams - if he is named next week I will cut off a nut.

I have to disagree. When on in the second half, Tarks did give us some run and drive. Liked his effort.

He wasn't at his best, but gave a contest - which is all we can ask.

Cara was ok. Welsh wore him like a glove.

Rhyce Shaw is a gun! 32 touches, 1 goal and so much run and he didn't even get to play the whole game. Keep it up Rhyce we love it.

Really encouraging from Travis too. Flashes from Rowe. The backline - Presti, Clement and Wakes were great yet again. About the only positives I can come up with.

Heres a bit of a match review.....

Ultimately another humiliation on ANZAC day and another season blowing loss. We were also lucky the loss was only 2 goals because essendon missed a lot of shots on goal.

Backline again was solid enough. Lucas and Lloyd had little influence. The killing blow however was little Lovett who totally broke free from Cole and proved unstoppable. Two critical moments of the game i thought were
a. the free kick to lloyd after tarrant was denied and
b. The kick to hird after the siren which admittingly was technically right just terrible unlucky for us.

Clement was ok however was a bit suprised to see him moved off hird. Morrison was really beaten from then on. Clement looked dangerous on hird, especially with his early 50 metre goal. However maybe mick wanted him back in defence but i thought he looked dangerous up the ground. Maxwell again played ok, did a great job on Lucas. Johnson also provided adequete run off the backline.

The midfield again had enough of the ball to win the game, however the forward structure was way off again. Licuria went a bit quiet. I thought burns was good and hard at the ball as usual. As ive mentioned already, woewoedin in terribly out of form. As is lockyer. The time away from football may have seriously hurt lockyer because he is no longer fast, no longer decisive when he's got the ball and is no good at a tagging role. May be time for him to go back into defence as a link up player where his disposal is sublime. However, in the middle, when he has an opponent, he has been beaten several times this year. Rheece Shaw was again a standout however still needs to improve his disposal. But hard to knock his game today, he was terrific. No one in essendons lineup was able to run with him. He really kept us in it, and allowed us to win possession through the centre.

THe forward line may have again been the worry. Trav Cloke really added some direction when he came on and is our big hope with rocca out. He was great. Cam showed glimpses on been ok but was again dissapointing. Against second rate ruckman, cloke and walker were again destroyed despite contesting admirably. Up until today, we have been forgiving against cloke as he has come up against quality ruckman, however today he did not. In his defence, i thought he didnt ruck enough. Walker was an odd choice to take first ruck. Walker dropped critical marks today. If he wouldve been able to take those marks, he wouldve been able to convert and be an effective player. Instead, he was a useless player who got a few loose touches around the ground.

Earlier in this week we questioned where the goals would come from. In the end, no body stood up.

Cloke got 1, he needed 2.
Tarrant tried hard all day but was terribly outnumbered. He got 2 but missed 2 important goals. Was not our worst but.
We needed a midfielder who could chip in with a few goals. The only player able to do this was julian rowe, who spent too much time off the ground. Woewoedin missed 2 despite kicking 1.
Caracella was unable to gain possession and was beaten by a decent player in welsh. However welsh is not overly tough and shouldve been beaten overhead. Initially i thought this would be a great matchup for us as welsh would be made accountable and shouldve conceded some marks. However welsh was still able to rack up 23 touches and dissallow caracella a shot at it.
Trav was our most dangerous player however only got 1 goal, he needed 2. But full credit to trav, he was brilliant.

I really dont know what else to say, much has been said. It was just a bad day. We were beaten by poor opposition.

THe votes for best on ground were

3. Rheece Shaw
2. Travis Cloke
1. Scott Burns

Worst on ground were

3. Walker (couldve easily been one of our best but dropped the important marks. Didnt kick a goal, was beaten in the ruck and just didnt present)
2. Cam Cloke (cant forgive him this week, his opposition was poor, didnt win the ball, 1 goal was not enough. He's too slow and must learn how to time his leaps and lead into effective positions of the ground)
1. Williams (woewoedin should consider himself very lucky but atleast woey got a few touches and a goal. Williams was unseen, failed to get a sneaky goal for the second week straight and is just a useless player. Dont know how o'bree didnt get in those votes either.)

I may have been a bit harsh on the talls. Just the thing is today was their chance. They've been admirable enough up to date, but to let laycock beat you, something is wrong. Tarrant was doing all the hard work on Fletcher and McPhee, Where were Walker and Cloke to present leads on the second string defenders. Kepler Bradley was out, their second best defender. They just had no one who shouldve stopped us. Travis was the only one to offer any leads. Only once did Cam take a good mark in a pack with Tarrant. He needed to be at more contests. Again, if Walker took those few marks, he wouldve converted and he may not have got the votes for worst on ground. Howver he dropped them, they were important.

Not looking forward to saints next week, however if we inject the pace of yakka into the centre and give rowe more game time, we should still be a show against ther average defence. Dissapointing game today however, and that could just be the knockout blow for our year. Round 5 was going to be the stage we would analyse our year. Its arrived and we are 1-4 at the bottom. No good.

Other mentions are that didak was quiet however showed enough to suggest that he is going to be a handy addition into the side. Needed a goal off him. Leon wouldve been handy.

Richards back next week is a must.

O'Bree no good but can be forgiven after an impressive game last week. Was not alone.

Watching Tarks play was upsetting - he is a shadow of his former self. I have the utmost respect for him but fear his career is at the crossroads as he is too slow and injury has robbed him of his natural game.

I still think however that we can turn the season around with the kids we have at Willy and the addition of Richards, Josh and eventually Bucks and Davidson.

This is going to mean wholesale changes and probably the best thing from today was the issue will be forced. If we had of pulled a win out of our arse then I fear we would have learnt nothing.

Lonie (Williams), J Cloke (Cole), Yakka (OBree), Rusling (Woewoedin), King (Lockyer) would be my changes. When Richards is fit, I would be inclined to drop Tex and leave C2 in the forward line. When Josh is fit, C2 will be in trouble unless he shows more.

yep i think i totally agree with that BigT. Everything was right except bringing cloke in for cole. Our backs are still awesome and cole atleast has pace. APart from that, perfect game plan to me. Tarks is going nowhere fast. The look on his face after the game showed me that he knows he is in trouble

Tex really needs to be left in a position. I am getting really irritated at how he is switched all over the ground.

He is an average ruckman and an average defender. Leave him at CHF so he can get his hands right.

I have to disagree with you there, I thought Tarks was to easily brushed aside and seemed to lack run in his legs, I'm sorry but I just don't rate him as highly as some others on this forum.

C2 was less than servicable although his direct opponent did not hurt him I thought we needed a big game from either him or Tex and both did very little. C2 just seems a little slow for my liking, although I acknowledge that his not really his fault.

As for cara, I probably was a little harsh on him as he has been one of our best in the first 4 rounds, but today's game was below par and he needs to know that. His decision to slow the game up when we were looking to gain the momentum in the 2nd quarter was dissapointing.

I think we need an injection of youth next week and a few heads need to role, I'm sure Mick agress judging by his 3rd quarter address :?

Cole has pace but has no decision making ability. Johnson is the key in that defensive running role. I would ask Cole to play more midfield and if he hasn't got the stamina train him to have it and then bring him back. It seems every week he makes "the" critical error and the whole side seems to get deflated.

But I still believe there is another underlying problem at the Lexus Centre - nothing is clicking, what off field issues or management problems are affecting the coaching and playing group? We definitely lack leadership on the field which is understandable.

Plus Clement - why kick to a 1-1 with Laycock on a small continuously?

MM was totally outcoached today with Laycock running rampant, trying Lockyer on Lovett was a disaster.

Also WTF wasn't Caracella and Didak in the forward line where they belong??? No wonder we kicked stuff all goals. Poor old Taz getting triple teamed cos the dons don't need to match up duds like Williams or OBree and Taz is left contesting with no quality smalls to clean up his hard work.

Were Carra and Dids asked to play up the ground that much???
