Flooding stops you going direct by putting stacks of people in the corridor - you have to chip it around otherwise you just kick it to a pack of opposition players sitting in the guts. Only time you can go direct is from a centre clearance, which was when we kicked alot of our goals. But as Darcy dominated we lost that opportunity.
.
What a load of crap. With Rocca, Tarrant & Walker in our forward line why cant they move the ball quickly & directly?
Thats the excuse used last year when we had no talls & had too chip it around. Whats the problem now?
Maybe Gerard Healey was right when he said we are a bunch of "B" & "C" grade players.
I know it's only Round 1 and there's plenty of time for improvement but boy was that BAD! Where was the spirit, hunger, toughness and excitement? From where I was sitting those things just weren't there. As for the 'chip kick' game, where is our running, leading and backing each other up? We had a tall forward line - why didn't we kick long and get the ball forward quickly before the opposition could flood? Why do we look like we're seriously lacking in confidence?
I will NEVER understand why Lonie isn't played on the wing. He's strong, he can run and he can kick goals. He is not a backman and has never played (and never will play) his best footy in that role IMO. I don't think we can blame Mick for the loss (I'm sure he didn't tell them to play that badly!) but some of his decisions are questionable.
Shaw may have gotten more of the ball but he turns the ball over far too often. Johno also got plenty of the ball but never looked dangerous - he seems to be missing some of the spark he used to have. Rocca is one of our most senior and experienced players and his performance was just not acceptable AT ALL. When Leon's on a roll we HAVE to leave him on the ground as he is such a confidence player - forget the rotation policy! As for Williams and O'Bree - no further comment!
Overall we looked slow and our skill level was shocking. The sad thing is I just can't see where the immediate improvement is going to come from. I'd certainly be dropping any senior players who aren't hungry, play some of the kids and make guys earn their position in the team. It's time to get tough.
Talk about frustrating! There seems to be far more questions than answers at the moment!
It may "only be round one" as some are saying but boy, if this is the way they play when they are "hungry and raring to go" according to the Coach, then god help us later in the year.
I may be a pessimist, but after last year, I wasn't really expecting us to set the world on fire - but I at least expected that the players would have a go.
The game was total crap.
If you bleed black and white you'll never walk alone.

The spirit hunger toughness and excitement? Where is spirit hunger toughness and excitement Just keep talking to me as long as you can. Did you think he was a backman and has never played and never will play his best footy in that role IMO? Sure, frustrating sounds like a good topic.
If my memory serves me correctly, Melbourne lost to Hawthorn in round 1 of 2004. I don't recall that it had a great bearing on how the respective teams performed for the remainder of 2004.
I'm not saying that we have the cattle to achieve as much as Melbourne last year, but you never can tell what might happen if things go our way.

bs. how many times did we go to taz and rocca and they had two players to beat? plenty. you can only move it quick enough to beat a flood after a centre clearance. any other time and the flood runs in to cover your spine.
Just read all 10 pages, and took my time doing it.
I was at the game yesterday and feel like most of do here, guttered!!!!!!
I would have put my house on us winning that game.
Yes its only round 1, but what the hell have we been doing for 5 months?
Can a performance like that be turned around in 7 days?
Who teaches them to kick?
Guy and Gavin were 2 of the hardest players going around, maybe they should step in and teach the team a thing or 2.
Learn how to tackle, look at how Brisbane play with half a team.
Not enough players playing for the jumper.
Players picked on reputation not on performances.
A coach that does what he wants, surly there was someone there that said C2 should be playing? Were they worried they would get the T.D. treatment?
Players looked up and there was nobody to kick too, lost faith in a first game Fanning after he dropped and easy chest mark, (similar to the west coast game), C2 would have helped him out. Would have offered a target to kick to out of defence.
A president that has been great behind the seams, need to show his passion for the club to the players, if he is doing that and they still play like shit, then let them know they are no longer welcome, NICK DAVIS.
If you pick a player play him? Our better player were sitting on the bench when the game needed to be won.
AND MICK. If your players are not listening to you DROP THEM. Don't give us lip service, WHO DIDN'T LISTEN TO YOUR INSTRUCTIONS?
After a long wait to the start of the season, what a crap display.
The only thing i enjoyed about yesterdays game was the clement vs johnson match up. Two champions against each other and both did some really good things. Johnson perhaps was one of doggies best with 20 odd touches and a few goals and assists but clement on the other hand held up the defence and saved about 4 or 5 others. Great tussle. Defence was not the problem yesterday until doggies went short and mick did not no how to reshuffle the team.
I thought he shouldve left presti n wakes up back as loose men. It was a low scoring game but atleast we were infront at this stage. We had more fire power up forward even if they werent performing.

Lot of comments about the flooding tactics and that a player of Lonies ability can kick over this, I havent seen Lonie do a long kick in about 18 months,is he being instucted to do this chippity chip shit which is strangling our team?
Our game plan sucks with this chipping it around the outside perimiter, sure as shit someone is going to stuff up with our below average skills and turn the ball over.
To think where we were at the end of 2003 and compare it to now is depressing. Most of our players have gone backwards and the coaching team of brainiacs are leaving me dumbfounded. We have lost Laidley and Daniher who actually knew what they were doing,Mckena was an extremely conservative footy player and is not the right man for the job, shit I even heard that Mckee is now our ruck coach,we all know what a damaging ruckman he was.
BTW, Woewodin is the softest and slowest player to ever win a Brownlow, I hope were not paying him to much. no wonder Scotland got the shits and left as he must have been fed up with sitting on the bench all the time watching these other hacks get a run

He did one in the Round 1 Wizard Cup game against Richmond. Got the ball on the wing, ran it to outside 50m and kicked it through for a goal. Got really excited because I thought Malthouse had worked out his coaching errors from last season.
Overall my biggest concern is that this was a team that was suppose to be ready to go and really hungry! No idea what happened to that team. They really did look very lethargic for large periods of the game.
Second concern is that we dont seem to pick the form players. Both Rowe and Maxwell looked in good form in the pre season and would have added much needed youth and excitment in the team along with Cam Cloke!
Third major concern is that we took off where we left off last year with this chipping rubbish and holding the ball for an eternity. We never seem to take the first option and it is very frustrating to see a player take a mark and turn his back on the play where he should look up straight away and move the ball quickly! I am a great fan of Woe but he is the most guilty of this!
I will reserve my real judgment for after round 5 as I really think the draw could not get any better for us in the first 5 rounds. If we cant atleast take 3 wins after 5 rounds, we are in for a long year. And maybe I have COMPLETELY over estimated our side!

slow yes, soft no. Last year woey was the only midfielder who stood up. He had a good year last year. Woewoedin puts his head over the ball. Perhaps in a pack situation he wooses out a bit but thats because of his size. Still i think id like to see mick use woey as the sweeper in defence and play jonno in the centre. Woewoedin could be used as a link up man getting cheap possessions and his pace wouldnt be a factor, whereas jonno's pace in the midfield would be handy. He is been wasted in defence. He needs more freedom.

Dont know what game u watched but when u say "plenty" i would have said "hardly any". We moved the ball along both wings for most off, if not all game. On 3-4 occasions Tarrant led up to the wing & was ignored everytime.
1. If we are looking like losing when not coping with a flood then we either continue what we are doing and lose or we try something different before its too late. Once again, we didn't try anything different, we lost.
2. If we did kick it long and quickly to our marking forwards it would be a contest. We would have to have some faith that they will keep possession more than 50.000001% of the time in the forward area. This is a risk. But do we believe we could keep possession in a contest more than 50.000001 % of the time? Maybe we would and we would score enough goals. But if you're half hearted and slow moving it forward then its not an even contest if you bomb it. So why don't we try something new? How about placing some faith in our players and adding a new twist to our game plan...attack. We might just have kicked 4 more goals before half time and gone in 40 to 50 points in front...game over.
