amongst the gloom I think Davis showed plenty of grunt tried hard and Lockyer will be much better this year Why wasn't Cole on the ground more time. What's the use playing Lonie where they did what happened to long direct kicks.
What is wrong with Buckley, is it a cork to above his knee, it didn;t look like his hammy.
As for Williams his shot at goal said it all.
Blokes like Woey and Burns are being crucified by a lack of direction.
And on and on and on, I only hope this was the bad one out of the way

For what it is worth here are my thoughts;
I am shattered - I thought Walls, Sheehan etc had us pegged wrong. They may still be wrong but they were proved right today.
One game doesn't make a season but....................... given it was the first game you would think our blokes would have been champing at the bit to improve on last years efforts. They weren't.
Most worryingly the team looked flat and slow. I know its easy to say all teams look flat and slow when they lose but we looked that way all thru the game.
We seemed to get it wrong in a number of areas;
We took in a side that was slow (read Burns, Licuria, O'Bree and Woey) against a very fit and quick bunch of blokes who were committed to running harder. Those four are all good footballers but they need pacy guys around. It will hurt us for a long time that we did not do the deal for Stevens, let Scotland go on a hope and then let Moloney slip when Woey would have attracted a first round pick from the Swans. I know many of you like Woey but he and O'Bree are the worst of the quartet and should have been used to get a quicker midfielder.
Mick was outcoached by a bloke out of the game for 2 years. His game plan allowed them to flood and either he didn't change it or the players did not execute it. The way to beat a flood is to either hold the footy and be sure of your foot skills or play on at every opportunity and kick long and thru the lines. Not once can I recollect a Pie player attempt this. Eade will be thinking how was he allowed to get away with it.
Why Cam Cloke did not play is beyond me - when Fanning was struggling Mick's answer was to put Tex in their and he did a good job. But it removed our natural advantage of height in the forwards. This played into the Eade's hands. We needed a thrid tall fwd.
My thoughts on the players;
Davis - tried hard and was a decent player in the first half but sat on the bench for a chunk of the second half. Spent some time in the middle and was ok - gave us a bit of spark and pace.
Tarrant - looked disinterested at the start but worked his way into the game. Two fairly easy misses in the first half suggest his foot skills are still not up to scratch.
Walker - again tried hard and did a couple of nice things in the first half but went missing after half time. This bloke needs a position
Lockyer - one of my favourites but gee he looked flat. Two nice first goals which kind of fell in his lap. Racked up the touches but was often found guilty of poor choice or poor skill
Rocca - Was doubled up all day. Will be interested in the view of those at the game but looked unfit. Went into the Ruck but was not the answer
Caracella - ok - along with Williams and Lica missed easy shots in the last when we needed to halt the flow. Notwithstanding was ok.
Cole - Played well in the first half and along with Shaw and Davis looked like they had the pace around the ground to worry the bullies. Ran thru the lines a couple of times and was not our worst.
Woey - Slow Slow Slow. Gets easy kicks in the back half but not once did he get the ball near the middle run thru the guts and kick to a leading fwd - like the better mid's do. I know a lot of you blokes like him but I rate Burns and Lica in front of him and I firmly believe he should have been traded when the Swans offered a first round pick for him. We had the chance to get Moloney with either our pick 10 or the first round pick the Swans wouldhave given us. We will not win a premiership with 3 slow mids.
Holland - Another of my favourites but struggled today. He did get near 20 touches but gee he was hindered by poor decision making and ineffective skills. Not the worst though
Morrison - I thought played ok and probably showed the most decisiveness of the back half. Was difficult to see who he was tracking at times so not sure how many he had kicked on him. Needs to run the lines more though.
Presti - Spent a lot of time on the bench because of match-ups but was solid when on the ground. Again, I would have had him on - we let the Bullies match up small in their fwds which again took away our advantage. MM got this one wrong.
Clement - very good until late in the game - had the better of Johnson until the last when BJ got them going. Could not believe JC let himself get turned around when BJ passed to Darcy for the crucial goal in the last.
Johnson - Tried hard but his skills are still crap. Was not the worse but like Tazz would be a much better footballer if foot skills were cleaner.
Wakelin - Thought he went ok. Seems to be preferred to Presti as the big man in defence by MM which is fair enough. Did not get many (if any) kicked on him.
Williams - What more can we say - the new and equally unimpressive version of Jason Wild. His skills really let him down. Had a chance to kick a crucial goal in the last and missed. MM loves him - don't see it.
Fanning - you can't be to hard on this bloke. He had a go. Seems to need a bit of sh*t in him and to get himself around the ground better. Looks ok for long term.
Burns - Tried hard but looked slow and again did not provide any run in the middle when he was there. Also seemed lost in the fwds and his opponent was running off him. Will be better next run - you can be sure of it.
Licuria - Tried real hard and was always having a go. If you could put his spirit in Lockyer you would have a Brownlow medalist. His skills let him down - again was one to miss a goal in the last good mids should kick.
Shaw - was real good in the first - skills let him down but played at a level of intensity missing amongst teammates. Had the better of Cooney in the first half but was taken from him in the second. Ran out of legs in the last. One of the better ones.
Buckley - was shocked to see him on the bench to start.No problems but I would have thought he would have played the 20 minutes Fanning played so he could guide him around the ground. MM got him wrong. Did not come on in the last. TV did not seem to think he was injured but he did look to twist his knee in the third.
Lonie - nothing to suggest he will be any better. He has to get the footy to use his pace and long kicking.
O'bree - Lot of cheap kicks in the back half. His stats don't tell the story. Nice goal in the first and the struggled.

Please TACKLE HARD and PRESSURE THEM!!.
I love the pies but my word its hard to watch them play sometimes.

Well i can tell ya first hand that was disgraceful, dont blame tarrent and rocca i was at the match and the delivery into the forward line was shitful, tarrent would lead 100m and get ignored, grant or rawlings or darcy jus keep playing loose and we kept kicking it to them. We missed Fraser today add him and didak in and we wouldve won. Cooney and Darcy towled us completly. Better win next week or our year is over thesse first 6 are very very important if we wana play finals.

Bloody disappointing! To be easily beaten by such an ordinary team like the Dogs who won't go near the 8. They probably should have won by about 8 goals.
Apart from about 15 minutes in the Q2 (when we actually looked great, with numbers everywhere) we played the same old non-direct chip it around shit that is so painful to watch. Both Bucks & MM said that last year the reason why we had to play that style at times was because we lacked tall targets through injuries. No such excuses today. Taz, Pebs & Tex are 3 big enough targets.
Rhyce was very good. Tarks, Licca, & Clem did everything they could. Davis put in, Cara showed his class, as did Morrison, Wakes can't be blamed or Johnno, Tex keeps improving. Holland was better than ordinary in the 2nd half. Cole still shows great talent but the brain explosions are still there at times. That's about all the positives.

You can't just put a tall player in the forward line and say that you've got a forward option! Look at Fanning in the ruck, you have to know how to play the position in order to use your natural physical talent.
Just like Fanning, give Presti the next 3 years as a CHF and he might be a decent forward

Presti was actually moved down forward in the second half, but only for about 5-10 mins.mudlark wrote:Have to agree with your match summary c71 except for the o'bree part?? however you mentioned we took Tex out of our tall forward set up so why not Presti as the 3rd tall up forward instead of saddle sores on the bench??

i mustve been watching a different match cos i thought shaw was very average today, turned the ball over waay too much. Clement was our best player by far folowed by Wakes. midfield was piss weak got chopped up by players like coooney. does MM game plan revolved around leaving 95% of opposition free cos the manning up today was a joke.
