Bottom line for me is that I was quite disappointed with the effort. I agree that the conditions were crap but you still expect players to have a crack and not drop their heads!
On the plus sides, we have a 6-7 very good to excellent players that will come into the side and make us a much stonger side in terms of skill and class. The reality is that we need them because our genuine depth only really goes to our 18th player. From there we have players that work hard and can do a job from about 18 to 25 and the rest are not really up to it at this stage!
I can't seriously sit here and say that I was that excited about what I saw with Egan, Cloke or Shaw. Both Egan and Cloke have the excuse that it was only their first game and and the conditions did not really suit Cloke at all! Both have time on their hands and will take the time in Williamstown to develop. As for Shaw, he has now been in the system for 12 months and IMO should be showing signs that he is ready for senior Footy. The reality is that he is no where near it! I actually sat at last weeks game against Richmond and said to myself that both Tambling and Delidio were going to be very good players. I could not say that about out debutants! Hope he proves me wrong!

People's comments about our best players to come in are true, and if these players play we are a far better side. However, how do we know these players are going to be able to play, and if they do, how long before they are in top form?
Stretch is gone for the season, Bucks and Didak are supposed to be short term injured but I am sus' about that. Taz's groin is scary. Our club is the same as any other in that you take away 4 or 5 of our best and we struggle.

As I've said: If you can get Bux, Taz, Roids, Dids, Locks and Blake into that side -for the majority of the year- we are a much, much better side right there.
As for the game last weekend, the kids and Chad (new arrival) will have benefited from the hit out as will a few with only a handful of games under their belts and that's about all you can say.
Hope we are working on our skills extensively over the next couple of weeks.
Its still only the practice rounds and far from fair dinkum: if you don't believe me: does anyone really think that Carlton, the Roos and Western Welfare are that good?

Yes (having actually seen the game today) that's probably a good point about not manning up - I suspect we made the weavils look good. I didn't see them doing too many really speccie things, mostly they just had more numbers around ball and more loose men, and pretty slick hands. Also waht's his face that got all those goals, mainly got them by running towards goal behind the ball, as were many of the toast midfielders, and receiving the feed-out, why didn't Colingwood ever do that, it's not rocket science - with the exception of Williams who did try to do that a bit and reaped the benefit once or twice. I can see Williams is developing as a winger but whether he can make the grade remains to be seen. I also thought R Shaw was pretty good although his disposal suffered a relapse after being good recently, but that is no doubt just a glitch. Leon showed some promise again as a midfielder, and I expect him to step up (not a popular opinion around here).
Some encouraging signs and we definitley have developed more depth when you compare our young stocks with this time last year. Hopefully another 4 to 6 will emerge this year if given plenty of chances in the seniors, and they give egan, H Shaw and leonard another chance next week. C3 looks very mobile, in fact looks like a 6'2" "little bloke" out there.
Definitely premature to read too much into the loss, esp considering the conditions and the stakes, and they didnt look as bad as the scoreboard.

Daks, not sure on this one. It IS only a praccy match, in Darwin, shocking conditions, 8 of our best out...Daks wrote:That's true, Pedro. But you're only as good as your last performance and out last performance was absolute shithouse.pedro wrote:Daks, this year hasn't really even started yet. At the moment were on the same amount of points as everyone else.
None of this bullshit "Oh, it was only a practice game, we didn't try", or "oh, we had out injuries, we were never going to win " We lost the game because we're a soft, inconsistant bunch with the ability to finish 1st if only we pulled out fingers out of our asses.
But instead of doing that, we opt for the easier option: playing a softer, less strenuous brand of football. Well that gets you nowhere.
I'm sick of making excuses. I used to make excuses about our team's performances week in, week out. I'd always try to find an excuse for our loss, even though there was never going to be one. You can be positive, but some of you guys are on the verge of delusional.
Sure it's only the start of the season, but i just have one of those feelings that we're in for another rough year, and until our boys put in a decent effort, i have no reason to think otherwise.
But you do have a point. We were all like this this time last year. You have a reason for what your saying.
We will know where we are at after ANZAC Day.

Johnno is 100%. We wont really know anything till Anzac.
Problem is Johnno, we're Collingwood supporters, we want to know NOW!!!
We've got therapy sessions to book, remote controls to hide...
Is the team that ran out the Tigers game the one we've got to look forward to? Or is it the wet bunch of girls we saw on Saturday? We can but pray its the former!
That thing I mentioned about Ant running under the ball, it wasnt just Saturday, its something I've noticed a coupla times previously. It appears like he's mistiming his leads or something. Anyone else noticed it?, maybe I'm imagining it.
Strangely though, it feels to me like his kicking has improved, despite a couple of stinkers on Saturday he seems a little more solid in his approach. Is it something he's been getting help with?
My tip for the big improver this year is Ryan Lonie. I'm liking the way he's looked thus far, and with his kicking ability that could be something to look forward to!
Again, with the kids, I feel like a few of them have found it too easy to get a game in the ones. Why give 100% when 75 will probably get you another shot next week? But then theres really no answer to this. So I'll just shut the hell up now.

I can see this being a very long year, no matter what anybody says with players out ect..... Tarrent, Bucks, Dids, Guy the injury list has already started, its the time you want your players fully fit and raring to go, i expect too lose the first couple. Our so called "soft" draw is becoming harder and harder as every week of the wizard cup goes by. People who say Wizard cup means nothing are joking themselves, form into a season whether wizard cup or practice matches does count teams do gain confidence, and if we cant win our next couple of praccy matches i would say bulldogs maybe favourites round 1.
BTW i haven't jumped of the bandwagon im just statin how im feeling.
